.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather is expected through Saturday morning.
Saturday afternoon through Tuesday a series of weather systems
will bring rain, wind and mountain snow to the area.
&&
.DISCUSSION...The cold front that brought rain to much of the area
on Thursday is slowly moving out of the area with only a few
showers left in eastern Mendocino and southeastern Trinity
counties as of 4am. Areas behind the showers are seeing low
clouds and some fog in the valleys. A weak warm front is also
bringing some mid and high level clouds to the area. This front is
expected to remain dry. In general a mix of sun and clouds is
expected today with dry weather. Tonight there is the potential
for frost at the coast. Confidence is low due to the questions on
the cloud cover.
The next front is expected to move into the area Saturday
afternoon. Models are in decent agreement on some light rain
moving onshore in humboldt and Del Norte counties in the mid to
late afternoon. Snow levels are expected to be around 3,500 to
4,000 initially with this system. They may rise as the precip
moves into the area so confidence is low on how much snow we will
wagtail see that low. Either way it will be above the passes on
Hwy 101, 199, and Hwy 299. Passes may be effect on Hwy 36 and and
snow is likely at Scott Mountain on Hwy 3. Breezy winds are
expected on the ridges with gusts to 35 to 40 mph in Del Norte
county on the ridges and lighter winds elsewhere.
The models continue to struggle withe timing of the next system
and the bulk of the rain. Current models and the NAEFs ensembles
show occasional light rain on Sunday with heavier rain coming on
Monday. There is decent agreement in the ensembles on some
moderate rain on Monday, amounts currently are expected to range
from 1 to 3 inches in Humboldt and Del Norte counties with up to
0.5 to 2 inches in Trinity and Mendocino counties. Snow levels
generally look to be around 5,000 to 6,000 feet with this system.
A period of stronger winds is likely with this system, but
confidence is low on the strength and timing. Current forecast
has the strongest winds Monday afternoon.
Monday night into Tuesday the models continue to differ with the
ECMWF showing a broad upper level moving onto the west coast the
and the GFS moves high pressure into the area more quickly. The
ECMWF solution brings snow levels down to 3,500 to 4,000 and
numerous showers across the area while the GFS keeps it dry.
Confidence is low in a particular solution at this point and it
will need to be watched as it gets closer.
Wednesday the models are showing a system bringing some rain to
mainly the northern portion of the area, however again there are
models differences with ECMWF keeping it drier. Thursday and
Friday the operational models keep the area dry, however the NAEFS
ensembles show the potential for additional systems to bring rain.

.Coastal Hazards...A combination of high seasonal tides, a modest
storm surge, and a building ocean swell is likely to result in
minor coastal flooding through Monday in many low lying areas
near the ocean. Minor flooding is possible today inside Humboldt
Bay, but with northerly winds expect it won't quite reach the tide
levels of 8.8 feet which would bring flooding to King Salmon and
Jackson Ranch rd. Saturday tides are slightly higher and winds
will begin to turn southerly making some minor flooding more
likely these same areas.
Sunday has the highest tides and and southerly winds are expected
as well. This is expected to bring quite a bit of flooding around
Humboldt Bay and may include areas near creeks that drain into
Humboldt. Outside of Humboldt Bay a swell 12 to 14 feet is
building into the waters. This swell combined with strong winds
and high tides could allow some waves to wash onshore onto Hwy 1
and Hwy 101 in the exposed areas. A coastal flood watch may be

.AVIATION...VFR conditions should prevail today as weak high
pressure builds over Northwestern California. Stray low clouds are
still possible through the rest of the early morning, however these
should burn off as temperatures increase and winds shift to light
northwesterly later today. Light offshore flow at the coast is
forecast to return this evening, which hopefully will suppress fog
formation for coastal terminals later tonight as well. /TDJ

.MARINE...Seas and winds continue to decay today as high pressure
builds over Northwestern California, finally allowing for conditions
to fall below SC levels later this afternoon. A last hurrah of
slightly elevated northerly winds, with gusts to 25 kts, is expected
offshore of Pt. Arena later this afternoon, and thus have extended
the SC for the southern waters until later this evening.
Tomorrow expect northerly winds 5 to 15 kts and combined seas below
7 ft before another NW swell fills in tomorrow night across the
region. This swell is conveniently synchronized with another frontal
passage bringing more gusty southerly winds with combined seas in
excess of 15 ft for the northern waters by Sunday morning. The
models diverge pretty heavily by Sunday night, and as a result
confidence in the forecast beyond Sunday is low at this time.
Currently are expecting a series of successively weaker NW swells to
line up through early next week which should keep seas above 10 ft,
however both local winds and shorter period wave production on top
of the swell is uncertain at this point. /TDJ
