.SYNOPSIS...Another cold front will sweep across the area early
on Sunday bringing another round of gusty south winds to the
coastal areas and higher terrain of the interior, along with
widespread rain and high elevation mountain snow. A brief
break in the weather is expected on Monday.

.DISCUSSION...The very active weather pattern continues over
northwest CA headlined by the latest cold front which is currently
approaching the region at this time. This well defined front
looks to reach the coast a little later this morning and then
will quickly push eastward through the afternoon. Wind speeds will
ramp up through the remainder of the morning. High resolution
guidance indicates winds around 50+kt beginning around sunrise
and peaking around mid morning. It is almost a certainty that the
higher elevations of Humboldt and Del Norte county will see gusts
from 50-60 mph by 11am. The best chances for mixing stronger winds
from aloft down to near sea level will be near when the frontal
boundary (and just behind it) crosses which again should occur
around 10am. In addition to the wind threat a brief period of
moderate to heavy rain is likely across much of the area through
late this afternoon. Rainfall amounts still look to range anywhere
from 0.75 to 1.5 inches, however the progressive nature of the
front should help to limit any localized flooding concerns.
Precipitation will become more convective tonight in the post
frontal environment as steepening mid level lapse rates help to
support modest instability, leading to a much more showery
precipitation regime through early Monday morning. Looking further
ahead into the extended portion of the forecast, guidance has
been trending a bit farther south with the next system for Monday
night into Tuesday. It is increasingly looking like at least the
northern half of the area will see another round of significant
rainfall, particularly north of Cape Mendocino into Del Norte
County. Upper level ridging will then usher in a period of drier
weather during the middle of the week before the next system
approaches late in the week. There is still some disagreement with
respect to the timing of the late week system, with the GFS
bringing a front through the area on Thursday whereas the ECMWF
holds off until Thursday night/Friday. /CB/JT

.AVIATION...Conditions continue to deteriorate along the coast
early this morning as another cold frontal system approaches.
Increasing S-SE winds aloft ahead of the front will result in low
level wind shear which has been included in the TAFs. MVFR and
perhaps brief periods of IFR conditions are expected as rain
develops with the front. But the main issue will be the strong
winds and accompanying bumpiness just off the deck due to the
stronger southeasterlies (mainly speed sheer). Winds will begin to
diminish in the late afternoon as the front pushes into the
interior but showers may still bring periods of mvfr conditions
mainly to the coastal sites.

.MARINE...An active weather pattern across the north Pacific
will continue to result in hazardous ocean conditions through mid
next week. South-southeast winds have been increasing this morning
as another storm system approaches the coast. Gales are expected
through much of the day along with a corresponding ramp up in
short period wind waves. There are hints of storm force gusts with
925mb reaching 50 to 60kt. The potential for gusts around 50 kt
will depend on the instability which does not seem to develop
except near the frontal boundary and behind it. The offshore
storm has also been generating very large westerly swell that will
spread into the waters later today. This long period swell will
combine forces with steep southerly wind waves resulting in seas
around 25 feet or so. Though winds should lay down on Monday, seas
will likely remain elevated with heights still around 20 ft or
so. Another storm will likely send another swell into the waters
by Wed.
BEACH HAZARDS...A significant westerly swell will build today
into Monday. This long period west swell will build to 20+ feet by
this evening. Breakers around 30 feet are expected. People
planning any beach activities should exercise caution and stay
farther back from the surf and off of jetties. Beach conditions
will remain unsafe and hazardous through mid next week.
