AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO 635 PM CDT Mon Jun 25 2018 .Discussion... Issued at 207 PM CDT MON JUN 25 2018 The main impact for the remainder of the day continues to be with the potential for strong to severe storms across much of central Missouri this afternoon and evening, with the primary hazard being in the form of strong to damaging winds. A mid-level closed low positioned over south central Nebraska will slowly lift northeast this evening, eventually taking on a negative tilt. As this occurs, an elongated mid-level vort lobe will continue to eject across central Missouri to the northeast through the afternoon and evening hours. It is underneath this feature that organized storms may form with the potential to produce damaging winds and isolated large hail throughout central to northern Missouri, and isolated tornadoes across northern Missouri. Some clearing has been noted via visible satellite imagery as of the early afternoon, helping to erode inhibition from this morning's activity. The delayed return of inhibition will keep MLCAPE values below 1500 J/kg this afternoon, though increased mid-level flow wrapping into the closed low will maintain moderate bulk shear values over 30 to 35 kts. While surface convergence overall appears lacking, multiple surface troughs will continue to provide some support for initiation, with the aforementioned forcing aloft likely maintaining what is able to develop. All said, there will be a window of opportunity this afternoon and early evening for storms to develop and become severe. Storms which do develop should congeal and become linear before quickly pushing into eastern Missouri. Expecting the greatest threat to be in the form of straight-line winds as storms continue this eastward propagation. A second round of storms and rain showers will then approach eastern Kansas and western Missouri tonight, just ahead of a surface low over southeastern Nebraska. This activity should be sub-severe as it pushes through the CWA, though deep layer moisture will likely produce periods of heavy rain within stronger storms. As the closed low continues to push eastward with time, a trailing cold front will sweep through northern Missouri and stall across central Missouri by Tuesday afternoon and evening. A subsequent round of severe storms is possible along this stalled boundary Tuesday, though this setup is conditional on how fast the atmosphere can destabilize in the wake of morning activity. Regardless of severe potential, storms are expected to develop along the boundary and flash flooding potential will become a factor as training storms are possible along the stalled boundary in a moisture-rich environment. Attention will then transition to a return of dangerous heat from the mid to late week as ample warm advection occurs underneath a mid- level ridging pattern. Heat indices look to rise above 100 degrees by Wednesday and above 105 by Thursday as air temperatures range from the mid to upper 90s.
