AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO 522 AM CST Mon Dec 3 2018 .Discussion... Issued at 412 AM CST MON DEC 3 2018 Morning satellite imagery shows a large, yet messy, trough prevailing over the North American continent with a sheared out shortwave trough seen stretching from eastern Kansas northeast to the Great Lakes within the base of the larger continental trough. The, now sheared out, shortwave trough was responsible for the persistent snow and otherwise light rain and drizzle that kept the weekend rather cool and wet, as well as a bit of light snow across northern Missouri early Monday morning; though not enough to cancel school, unlike last weekends Blizzard. Forecast to start the work week will be cold, with the prevailing large continental trough allowing the cold air to wallow across the Plains States for a couple of days before the synoptic pattern across the Nation undergoes a significant adjustment over the later half of the work week. But for today, temperatures will remain below freezing, though not by much in some areas; and the persistent cold air advection within the cloudy skies across the region today will likely result in ongoing flurries through much of the day, with any accumulations likely being no more than a dusting. Temperatures will remain cold going through Tuesday, but the beginning of the large scale pattern adjustment will begin to have an effect on the Plains States starting Wednesday. Wednesday on into next weekend...will see some undulation in temperatures, though generally it will be cold, and there will be a couple of chances for some precipitation. Expect Wednesday's highs to climb above freezing for a little bit ahead of a shortwave trough that will be sliding into a northwest flow across the Plains States by the middle of the work week. By late Wednesday, this clipper like trough will be sliding across the Northern Plains, with frontogenic forcing along it's southern edge likely inducing a bit of precipitation Thursday morning across northern Missouri. Precipitation types might be a bit tough to pin down, as temperatures ahead of and behind the through will be wallowing around freezing. That said, there will likely be a bit of light snow accumulation's Thursday morning across areas of north central, northeast, and central Missouri; with less than half an inch of snow expected. Otherwise, looking forward to the weekend, as the Thursday trough movers past us it will eventually result in the broad continental trough advecting east, with a large continental ridge expected to replace the trough by next work week allowing our prevailing afternoon highs to climb above freezing again. But, for that to occur another large trough --currently seen as a cutoff low in the eastern Pacific-- will have to traverse the southern Plains.
