Baroclinic zone just south of I80 will serve as a foci for
additional convective snow development this morning into the
afternoon. This zone is expected to drift south during the day. As
with last night, the H85 fgen nails the current snow. This
supports a southern drift in the band. Overall 1/2 to 3/4 miles
visibility has been reported in the heaviest band, suggesting that
a quick 1/2 to 1 inch could be possible in the band. As a result
of this snow, have opted to extend and expand the winter weather
advisory until 20z. A lull in the precip is expected later this
afternoon before the next salvo moves in overnight.

A very busy night of updates as our forecast adjusts to the
narrowing and northbound band of moderate to heavy snow band,
which move into WI before the wave is now pivoting, bringing the
band southeast on the backside. This effectively shut down all of
our counties around 10 PM, except the northern tier(Highway 20).
That area as of 1 AM, was reporting 3 to 4 inches, with 1 to 3
inches reported south ending just south of Interstate 80. The
forcing for snow will be progressive this morning, sweeping
southeast with time, and should end our event no later than mid
morning. Our Winter Storm warning will continue for the far north,
with advisories covering the band of snow shifting through. Once
this band exits, headlines are likely to be dropped for this
event.

.SHORT TERM...(Today)
ISSUED AT 313 AM CST Fri Feb 9 2018
Today, snow will move through progressively, with accumulations of 1
to 2 inches possible in the 2 hour long lasting band of snow.
Most locations are certainly looking at around 1 inch of
additional snow with this band. The far north, before dawn, will
continue to see more continuous snow, and totals still look to
reach the 4 to 8 inch range, with a rapid drop to 1 to 4 inches
just by Highway 30 and Interstate 80. Our south, should see light
amounts only, and already has an advisory. I'll keep it for
impacts for now, as the snow band will move through just prior to
the morning commute.
The rest of today will be mainly dry, with some spotty flurries or
very intermittent light snow. No accumulations are expected after
the morning band of snow exits the area. Temperatures will hold in
the upper teens to upper 20s, with winds gradually decreasing, as
cold advection shuts down with the approaching wave for tonight.
That storms influence and snow chances will arrive shortly after
the period today.
.LONG TERM...(Tonight through Thursday)

Forecast focus on two more snow events this weekend before the
weather turns quieter and warmer for much of next week.
Tonight and Saturday: A short wave in the zonal flow aloft will take
advantage of the mid-level baroclinic zone in place, and produce
another round of accumulating snow. The light snow should begin
later this evening and continue overnight, then diminish Saturday
morning. A general 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected over much of
the cwa, with less than an inch from Dubuque to Independence. With
the bulk of the snow falling overnight along with light winds this
should have limited impact, other than the usual snow covered roads.
I don't see the forcing particular strong so the lowest visibilities
should be in the 1 to 2 mile range. Lows will be in the single
digits and teens above zero. Highs will be in the teens.
Saturday night and Sunday: Yet another short wave in the flow will
provide another opportunity for accumulating snow, but this one
appears to be a bit farther southeast. This looks to be another 1 to
3 inch snowfall, southeast of a Cedar Rapids to Freeport line. To
the northwest of that line, little or now snow is expected. The snow
will diminish and then end Sunday morning. This event also should
have limited impact other than snow covered roads as winds will be
light and the bulk of the snow falling later in the evening and
overnight. Lows will be in the single digits to lower teens with
highs in the upper teens to lower 20s.
Most of next week: Things quiet down with dry weather expected along
with moderating temperatures into the 30s as the week progresses.

of Richland, or 11 miles west of Washington, moving slowly east
southeast at 20 mph. An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow are
possible through noon today.

Iowa City, Burlington, Muscatine, Fairfield, Monmouth, Mount
Pleasant, Washington, Wapello, Sigourney, Columbus Junction, Durant,
Oquawka, West Liberty, West Burlington, Wilton, Kalona, New London,
Mediapolis, Wellman and Lone Tree.
Although this event is expected to be short lived, if conditions
