Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Quad Cities IA IL 648 AM CDT Wed Jun 27 2018 ...12z AVIATION UPDATE... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 330 AM CDT Wed Jun 27 2018 Fortunately we dodged a more active weather day yesterday with possibly a brief tornado near Memphis MO and radar indicated rotation in Henry IL yesterday evening which prompted a tornado warning. 17z DVN RAOB yesterday revealed weaker bulk shear (0-6km ~25 kts) and instability (SBCAPE ~1000 j/kg & paltry mid level lapse rates of 5.5c/km) limiting strength of updrafts and owing to generally benign multicell convection for nearly all of the area. The warm front which was a concern for tornadoes ended up just north of the CWA where it did produce a few tornadoes over southern WI. The upper level low responsible for the showers and scattered storms was located just south of Green Bay WI early this morning, with attendant surface low further south of Milwaukee WI both shifting eastward early this morning. In the wake a weak surface pressure pattern exists over the region with a subtle trough/wind shift draped along the WI/IL border into north central IA. Weak convergence and added moisture from rainfall yesterday was aiding patchy to areas of fog most prevalent across northeast IA into northwest IL, along with some stratus rotating down from MN/WI. Looking upstream an active convective cluster was noted over portions of SD on nose of thermal ridge aided by ascent from shortwave and attendant weak surface low. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) ISSUED AT 330 AM CDT Wed Jun 27 2018 Stratus and patchy fog mainly over northeast IA and northwest IL is expected to eventually to lift into stratocumulus deck while expanding down through east central IA and north central IL today. This will result in partly to mostly cloudy skies much of the area with mostly sunny skies favored southeast IA, northeast MO and west central IL. Weak energy rippling down backside of the departing low could generate a few weak showers (likely more sprinkles than anything) north/east of the Quad Cities, but probability too low for mention especially with that area having biggest question on extent of surface heating. Cloudiness will play big role in temps today with the coolest readings (mid to upper 70s) beneath the clouds north/northeast while warmest (mid 80s) in the sunnier south. Convection over SD may continue to percolate while shifting gradually southeast, but overall is expected to weaken as energy is sheared in confluent flow overhead. However, may have to watch for some elevated showers skirting portions of southeast IA and northeast MO tonight. Outside of that generally mostly clear to partly cloudy skies tonight and mild with lows in the 60s. May have some more patchy fog especially in the river valleys and low lying areas with weak surface pressure pattern. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) ISSUED AT 330 AM CDT Wed Jun 27 2018 Thursday Light southeast winds develop during the morning as high pressure shifts east of the area. The combination of weak low-level moisture advection and evapotranspiration from maturing crops will cause surface dewpoints to reach the lower to possibly middle 70s by the afternoon and evening. Instability will also be on the increase. The most extreme surface-based CAPE (3500+ J/kg) is anticipated across the southern third of the CWA. Parts of the forecast area still stand a chance for scattered storms on the precipice of the heat dome or zone of isentropic lift. Yet forecast soundings indicate a fair amount of CIN, thereby limiting the potential for surface-based convection. The GFS remains the worst case scenario solution, taking an MCS through the southern CWA during the morning and breaking out scattered storms further north in the afternoon. On the other extreme, the ECMWF is totally dry. The NAM/CMC are more in the middle. For now, didn't stray from model blend 20% chances. Predictability beyond 12 hours is very low in these types of regimes because the models are attempting to forecast thunderstorms that are influenced by previous day storms that haven't formed yet either. For Thursday afternoon, latest thinking is peak heat indices below 100 F advisory criteria. Have upper 80s far north to upper 90s far south. Friday and Saturday No significant changes to the forecast for the end of the week. On Friday, strong warm air advection downstream of a seasonably strong Northern Plains low will spread anomalously high 850mb temperatures, in the mid 20s Celsius, over the Upper Mississippi River Valley. These are 2.5 to 3 standard deviations above the climatological mean per NAEFS and should effectively cap off the lower atmosphere, inhibiting convection. In fact, the axis of a 50 kt 850mb jet is forecast to be located well to our northwest through north-central Iowa into Minnesota, and think MCS activity will be north of this axis. Also on Friday, a well mixed boundary layer will yield gusty SSW winds and the hottest temperatures and heat indices of this extended period. Forecast highs are in the lower to upper 90s. Peak heat indices are 105-110 F for most locations. Either Heat Advisories or Excessive Heat Warnings will be needed, assuming convection stays well north as currently forecast. Continued hot conditions for Saturday with 100+ F heat indices. A cold front should bring scattered storms Saturday evening or night into Sunday morning. High moisture along the front with PWATs around 2 inches and dewpoints in the mid to upper 70s are favorable for very heavy rainfall rates from any storms. CID and MLI will see VFR to start and likely to see period of MVFR to lower VFR sct-bkn clouds (2000-3500ft agl) eventually becoming all VFR this afternoon. Issued at 1024 PM CDT Tue Jun 26 2018 Evening forecasts show little change from the ones posted earlier today. There were localized and rather narrow swaths of heavy rain of 1-2+ inches over a few basins earlier this afternoon into the evening. But these localized swaths should not be that much of an impact for large deviations from river forecasts earlier today. If anything, the heavy rain that did fall may be localized enough(with more areas that only received light precip amounts) that forecasts may be trended down tomorrow for a few sites. For the Mississippi, forecasts continue from earlier today with the higher trends/raises in crests at many locations due to flows coming from upstream have been measuring higher than expected. This caused a jump in flood category at a few sites, with locations downstream of the Iowa River confluence now looking to crest closer to major flood stage.
