$$What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this river flood warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Quad Cities, IA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this river flood warning went out at May 10, 6:44 AM CDT, 3 hours 47 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, May 10, 6:44 AM CDT, 3 hours 47 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Quad Cities IA IL 644 AM CDT Thu May 10 2018 ...AVIATION UPDATE... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 334 AM CDT Thu May 10 2018 Large-scale subsidence upstream of a shortwave trough axis over Lake Michigan has led to mainly clear skies for E Iowa/NW Illinois tonight. Temperatures were relatively mild in the 50s. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) ISSUED AT 334 AM CDT Thu May 10 2018 Another warm day from near 70 F far north to low/mid 80s far south. By evening, a cold front will drop through the northern forecast area, then reach along I-80 at night before washing out across the south. There will be an impressive temperature gradient along and behind the front -- forecast overnight lows range from the lower 40s in the northeast to 60 F at Keokuk, IA. As the surface front is moving through and turning winds around to the ENE, the flow aloft (850-700mb) is forecast to quickly increase out of the WSW in response to an upstream shortwave trough over Nebraska and Kansas. Persistent isentropic lift and moisture advection will increase chances for scattered showers and a few thunderstorms Thursday night. The highest chances for more widespread and appreciable rain (0.25+ inches) are near or north of highway 20. This will be close to a zone of 850-700mb Fgen/convergence. However, the heaviest swath of rain Thursday night may end up north of the area, from northeast Iowa to southern Wisconsin. Uttech .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 334 AM CDT Thu May 10 2018 The active weather pattern will continue over the weekend well into next week with chances for rain and thunderstorms nearly every day. This will occur as a front that becomes stalled over or near the forecast area interacts with upper level disturbances and moisture from the Gulf. The boundary will also result in a very sharp north to south temperature gradient over the weekend. Model QPF totals of 1 to 2 inches across eastern Iowa into north central Illinois for Friday through next Monday do not look unreasonable as the the positioning of high pressure setting up the southeast U.S. and the southwest flow aloft channels Gulf moisture into the region. This may lead to additional rises on tributary rivers and possibly prolong on-going flooding along the Mississippi River, as discussed in the Hydrology Discussion. Friday: Models have converged on placement of the east to west surface front roughly between I-80 and the eastern Iowa highway 34 corridor. A passing upper level shortwave in the first half of the day will drive a wave of showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly across the northern half of the forecast area where thetae convergence will occur along the 850 mb boundary. The rain and brisk northeast winds, enhanced off Lake Michigan will hold temperatures in the 50s and 60s north of the boundary, while to the south, northeast MO, southeast IA and west central IL could reach into the lower 80s. This 30 plus north/south temperature gradient will set up a large temperature bust potential, with lowest confidence along the I-80 corridor, where the cold air may win out, leading to much cooler temperatures than forecast. Friday night: The next shortwave in combination with a developing low level jet and elevated instability may lead to strong to severe storms with large hail the main threat and SPC maintains a marginal threat over all but our far north and northeast. For now, model blend based pops are across the mainly the north in the evening, spreading south after midnight. This may be too far north, depending on the location of the surface boundary, which is shown sagging southward into northern MO and central IL overnight. Saturday: Temperatures will again be greatly dependent on the location of the front. For now, highs are optimistically in the lower to mid 70s across the far south, while the remainder of the forecast area should be limited to the 50s and 60s with easterly winds and rain from a dissipating MCS to start the day. Additional showers are possible through the day with low confidence thunder mentioned as additional waves migrate through the baroclinic axis. SPC maintains a marginal risk for mainly late afternoon and evening severe storms from the highway 30 corridor southward, but this threat looks greatest closer to the surface front which will likely be further south. Additional waves interact with the stalled front to continue chances for showers and thunderstorms Sunday through Monday. The weakening easterly flow may allow temperatures to return to the 60s north to 70s south Sunday. Much warmer temperatures and likely more humid weather follows for Tue and Wed with continued chances for showers and thunderstorms in a low confidence, active pattern. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday Morning) ISSUED AT 636 AM CDT Thu May 10 2018 VFR to prevail into tonight, MVFR possible late. A cold front will turn winds to the north and eventually east late this afternoon and tonight. Lower ceilings will accompany the cooler air behind the front and could become MVFR at KDBQ/KCID. For precipitation, mentioned showers and VCTS at KDBQ. Confidence is lower on areal coverage to the south, so left out prevailing rain mention at the other terminals for now. Uttech && .HYDROLOGY... Issued at 556 AM CDT Thu May 10 2018 Little change early this morning with flooding along the Mississippi River and flood warnings continue. The crest appeared to be near Fulton, and most sites were close to being on track with the latest forecasts issued last evening. Minor to Moderate flooding is occurring from Dubuque to the Quad Cities and Moderate to Major flooding is occurring or forecast to occur from Rock Island to Burlington. Flooding is still expected to only reach Minor category at Keokuk and Gregory Landing. The Iowa and Cedar Rivers remain high with Conesville, Wapello and Oakville still rising ahead of the most recent crests. Flood warnings remain in effect for Minor flooding at these sites. The Wapsipinicon at De Witt continues to have a threat of minor to moderate flooding late in the weekend and into early next week. But how high the Wapsi goes at De Witt still in question, thus a river flood watch remains in effect for that point. All rivers will need to be watched for impacts from several rounds of rain and thunderstorms expected from Thursday night through at least the middle of next week. There is the potential for widespread 1 to 2 inch rainfall totals by Monday over eastern Iowa into northwest Illinois. This may result in additional rises on tributary rivers, which is not accounted for in the latest forecasts. Current timing suggests this additional contribution would likely reach the Mississippi River behind the current flood crest. The net result for the Mississippi River would be a prolonged falling limb of the flood rather than keeping the river near crest values or a higher crest. && .DVN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
