...Northwest Gales Tonight...

.The Gale Warning continues for tonight and Wednesday across the 
open waters of Lake Huron. Small Craft Advisories are extended 
through Wednesday night. A cold front exiting the central Great 
Lakes this morning is leaving sub-gale northerly wind and high 
waves ongoing across Lake Huron. This will be followed by a quick 
progression of high pressure and backing of the wind to southwest 
during the afternoon. Southwest wind then increases to near 30 
knots this evening as the next low pressure system reaches eastern
Lake Superior. This system sweeps a stronger cold front across 
the region tonight which brings a 40 kt northwest gale to the open
waters with waves exceeding 15 feet through Wednesday morning. 
Marine conditions remain unsettled Wednesday night as high 
pressure builds into the central Great Lakes. The high moves 
quickly across Lake Huron during Thanksgiving leaving increasing 
south wind to finish the week.

...HEAVY FREEZING SPRAY NORTHERN LAKE HURON TODAY...

.Gale warnings and Small Craft Advisories continue through today as a 
strong cold front sweeps through the central Great Lakes. A Heavy 
Freezing Spray Warning is also in effect for the north third of Lake 
Huron as solid northwest gales bring arctic air into the region 
combined with 10-15 ft waves. The wind diminishes and marine 
conditions improve considerably tonight as high pressure builds into 
the region. The high then moves quickly across Lake Huron during 
Thanksgiving leaving increasing south wind Friday into Saturday. The 
pattern shifts to a warming trend with the next chance of 
precipitation in the form of rain Saturday into Sunday. Increased 
stability over all marine areas is also expected to limit wind gusts 
to 30 knots during the weekend.

...Northerly Winds Build Large Waves Along Lake Huron Shoreline...

.Gale Warning, Heavy Freezing Spray Warning and Small Craft Advisory 
remain in effect through the afternoon in the wake of a cold front 
that has moved through the Great Lakes. Winds will begin to decrease 
into the evening allowing for the Gale and Heavy Freezing Spray 
Warnings to expire. Northerly winds will continue elevated nearshore 
waves resulting in the Small Craft Advisory remaining through 
tonight. High pressure building across the northern Great Lakes 
improves conditions tonight into tomorrow. The high pressure will 
exit to the east tomorrow night and bring warmer southerly winds. 
Increasing pressure gradient on Friday with the approaching low 
pressure system, though stability over the waters will keep any wind 
gusts limited to 30 kts or less. The warmer temperatures will bring 
a chance of precipitation in the form of rain over the weekend.

.AVIATION...

Cold front will work through the area early in the forecast with
winds veering to northwest and increasing to 10 knots or a bit more.
Periods of light snow will bring MVFR to occasional IFR conditions
along/immediately behind this front. Snow will then end from north
to south overnight, but cigs will persist in cold northwest flow in
the wake of front on Tuesday (edging up to lower VFR). Winds some
back around to southwest late in the forecast as high pressure
passes to the south. This flow will maintain extensive lake clouds
form Lake Michigan.

For DTW...Periods of light snow overnight with MVFR cigs. Snow will
end late tonight with lower VFR cigs then holding into Tuesday and
Tuesday night. Northwest flow will increase to 10+ knots late at
night and persist through Tuesday, gradually backing to southwest
again late in the forecast period.

DISCUSSION...

An arctic front is hung up this afternoon over portions of northern
Lake Michigan and the Straits region. Surface observations clearly
show a weak thermal low tracking along this boundary through the Tip
of the Mitt, an artifact of modest differential cyclonic vorticity
advection and right exit region dynamics. Southwesterly flow in
place to the south of the surface low will initially limit the
southward progression of this front, however, with the low passing
into Ontario this evening surface pressure rises and northerly flow
will eventually win out. Models are strongly exhibiting the look of
postfrontal precipitation for tonight, signaling the dependence of
convective processes. An item that needs to occur before
precipitation can begin over anywhere in Southeast Michigan today,
is the saturation of very dry layer between 2.0 and 6.0 kft agl.
This will occur from north to south tonight, concurrent to frontal
passage and the wind shift. Solid cold front for middle of November
with 850mb temperatures dropping from -3C this afternoon to
approximately -14C by Tuesday afternoon.

Feature to key on for tonight is the thermal lake aggregate trough
that will develop over the southern basin of Lake Huron. The surface
trough will serve as a pivot point allowing enhanced surface
convergence to bullseye for a time over Huron County. Problem is
that models have been very consistent in showing steady veering of
wind directions throughout the night. Lack of any well organized
near surface thetae lapse rate structures in the model data lends
increased confidence that a dominant lake effect band will not
impact the eastern Thumb. Model soundings and current lake
temperatures show a favorable lake effect sounding, with equilibrium
heights up to 10kft agl and lake induced CAPE of 300-400 J/kg.
Therefore, brief high snowfall rates will be possible, with activity
remaining very progressive. Time window for les in the Thumb/Huron
Co. is between 00-09Z tonight. With snow ratios of around 16:1,
snowfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected with locally higher
amounts possible near the shoreline. Given overnight timing and the
progressive movement of activity, will not issue a Winter Weather
Advisory. For the remainder of Southeast Michigan, isentropic ascent
is virtually non-existent with everything relying on brute
convergence along the front. Definitely have respect for the
soundings with supersaturation with respect to ice through 16.0 kft
agl. Therefore, have reverted back to likely PoPs for light snow
tonight. Overwhelming consensus of model data supports just a minor
accumulation potential tonight for areas away from the Thumb.
Accumulations of a dusting or less than half inch possible for most
locations. Timing for Metro Detroit is between midnight and 5 AM.
Surface temperatures during that time will fall below 32F.

A fairly chilly day is expected for Tuesday with windchills ranging
in the lower 20s. West winds will be relatively modest during the
day ranging between 10 and 20 mph. By evening the pressure gradient
will increase significantly causing winds to increase between 20 and
30 mph.

Impressive lobe of high planetary vorticity will pivot through
northern Canada sending another wave through the northern Great
Lakes Tuesday night. Low chance PoPs exist for light snow Tuesday
night, however, soundings are very dry and not supportive of
widespread accumulations of any substance. Strong surface ridging
expected Wednesday with temperatures likely dropping during the day.

SE MI will reside on the back-end of an amplified thermal trough
that will allow even cooler air to pool in over Michigan throughout
Thursday morning, capping daytime high temperatures in the mid to
upper-20s across the Tri-Cities into the Thumb. Daytime highs will
be slightly warmer across the Metro region with highs in the upper-
20s to lower-30s. Increased subsidence from an approaching high
pressure system will scour out cloud cover throughout the day on
Thursday and will bring a mix of clouds and sunshine by the
afternoon as the surface high settles east of Lake Huron. Dry
weather will persist into Friday as overnight lows dip down into the
low to mid-20s.

Upper-level troughing will amplify across the Plains Friday and will
set up a ridge across the eastern U.S. which will mark the first
major pattern shift in well over a week. Anticyclonic flow around
high pressure centered across the western Atlantic will aid in
ushering warmer air into the region, noted by h850 temperatures
increasing from an average of -13C to 3C Thursday afternoon into
Friday afternoon. As a result, surface temperatures will increase
into the lowers 40s across SE MI on Friday and mid-40s on both
Saturday and Sunday.

Mean southwest flow will increase moisture transport late Friday
into Saturday and will bring increased precipitation chances to all
of SE MI. Confidence remains low at this time regarding
precipitation type during overnight hours as it will be highly
dependent on overnight lows, which still has room to vary +/- 5
degrees as we are still 5 days out in model space. As of now,
forecasted lows Friday into Saturday drop into the mid-30s across
the northern Metro region northward which will introduce the chance
of a wintry late Friday into Saturday, before transitioning to all
rain by Saturday afternoon. Another chance for precipitation will
enter again Sunday into early Monday as low pressure travels from
the eastern Rockies into the Ohio Valley. Rain again will be likely
for the afternoon hours, with the possibility of transitioning over
to a wintry solution as temperatures cool overnight.

MARINE...

Gusty northwest wind will build significant wave heights to several
feet in the nearshore zones of Lake Huron tonight through Tuesday.
Maximum wave heights will approach 10 feet at times. Small craft
advisories remain in effect. Fresh westerlies Tuesday night will
veer to northwesterly near-gales with gusts to low-end gales
appearing increasingly likely through the day Wednesday as maximum
wave heights exceed 15 feet. A gale watch is now in effect for the
open waters during this time.
