.Snow will develop across northern Iowa late tonight. The snow 
may become heavy at times with visibilities reduced to around 
1/2 mile or less, during the daylight hours Tuesday, especially 
across far northern Iowa. Further south, a wintry mix of snow, 
sleet, or freezing rain is expected. Total snowfall amounts will 
range from 6 to 8 inches near the Iowa/Minnesota border to 2 to 4 
inches along the US Highway 20 corridor.

Strong and gusty northwest winds will also develop with wind
gusts over 40 mph possible by Tuesday afternoon. These winds will
cause areas of blowing snow and hazardous driving conditions.

.An area of moderate to locally heavy snow continues to move 
through eastern portions of north central Iowa. Visibilities have

Northwest winds will continue to become strong and gusty across
north central Iowa this evening. The combination of lingering
snowfall and gusty winds will allow visibility restrictions to
drop to as low as one half mile or less at times. The blowing 
snow and reduced visibility conditions are expected to continue
through the mid evening hours. As light snow tapers off by mid to

Bottom Line up Front...
Generally quiet, cold weather expected today,
with effectively nil-impact drizzle/flurries possible across the CWA.

Setup...
08z Water vapor imagery continuing to pick up on seemingly
permanent upper low spinning over the Hudson Bay. Meanwhile,
water vapor imagery also picking up on a shortwave dropping into
northern Washington from British Columbia. This will be a synoptic-
scale driver for the winter event mentioned below in the long-
term section. Sfc analysis showing what is probably best-described
as an broad region of height falls coming off the Rockies.
Concurrently, a 1020mb sfc high has slid over southeastern Iowa.
Where there has been snow from earlier today, temperatures have
plummeted. Centerville has dropped to 14 degrees, where Ottumwa,
not much more than 25 miles north and snow-free, was measuring 21
degrees.

Precipitation...
For today, The conglomerate region of height falls
slowly organizes as the upper low in the Pacific NW races rapidly
eastward. By 00z Tue, models in good agreement with consolidating to
a single sfc low which should be entering western Kansas at that
time. Prior to consolidation, a northern cyclone, picked up on
the 950mb height field, will be positioned over northwestern
Nebraska. Attendant to this low, will be a very weak boundary that
extends eastward and more or less drapes along the Iowa Minnesota
border. With this cyclonic feature weakening throughout the day,
the boundary never becomes very well-established, with minimal
low-level frontogenetical forcing. Forecast soundings show cloud
thicknesses of 4000 to 5000ft, which is sufficient for drizzle.
Sfc dewpoint depressions are around 10 degrees, which is not
great. Dry air continues from the sfc to around 2000ft. So in all,
have flurries/drizzle/sprinkles going today, with transition to
more measurable precip towards tonight.

Temperatures...
850mb temperatures go from -8C to -12C at 12z
yesterday, to around -3C to -7C at 12z today. Satellite imagery
picking up on blanket of mid-level clouds currently over Nebraska
that will rapidly begin to cover Iowa through this morning. So
although WAA in place this afternoon, temperatures will only be
around 5 or so degrees warmer today than yesterday. These
temperatures are around 15 to 20 degrees below normal for this time
of year.

.LONG TERM.../Tonight through Sunday/

A potent PV anomaly that is just moving into the Pacific Northwest
early this morning, will race over the next 24 hrs and be over
Nebraska by 12z Tue. The surface low that will develop today over
eastern Colorado in response to the upper level system, will move
east across Kansas overnight. This low along with a large high
pressure system along the Atlantic coast will lead to good
southerly flow off the Gulf. The flow will lift a moisture plume
north with some of this moisture overrunning into Iowa. The
initial result is the potential for fog developing south,
especially in the vicinity of Sunday's snow and possibly some
drizzle as low level profiles saturate as the plume lifts north.
The latest road forecasts suggest road temperatures will remain
at 32 or above for much of the area though can not rule out a few
icy patches on bridges over mainly far northern Iowa. The
precipitation should begin to switch to snow over northern Iowa by
06z and should have a good band of snow develop over northwest
Iowa into southern Minnesota during this time as the mid level
forcing arrives. One inch plus per hour rates are possible during
this time. The forcing weakens during the afternoon however modest
vertical ascent will continue through a descending dendritic
growth zone as cold advection arrives. Additional accumulations
are expected after 18z before ending by the evening. Snowfall
amounts of 4-7 inches are expected generally north of Highway 3
and higher amounts are possible near the Minnesota border.
Snowfall amounts of 2-3 inches may extend as far south as Highway
20. Wind gusts by the afternoon should be strong as the cold
advection increase and the strongest pressure gradient is in
place. Mixed layer winds of 35 to 40 kts are common and certainly
gusts over 40 mph at the surface are possible. These gusts will
create areas of blowing snow and will cause some travel concerns
despite road temperatures near 32. Do not expect Blizzard
conditions with the strongest winds disconnected from the peak
period of snow but will need to continue to monitor the situation.
At this time will be issuing a Winter Storm Watch for far
northern Iowa for the snow and blowing snow potential.

South of Highway 20, some snow accumulations may occur however it
should be lower impact and mostly occurring during the day with
some solar radiation penetrating the clouds and warmer road temps,
should keep roadways in good shape. A few thunderstorms may clip
the far southeast on Tuesday. This area is in the SPC Marginal
Convective Outlook with the biggest threat being marginal severe
sized hail.

The cold advection will sweep across the entire area by late
Tuesday into Tuesday night. Low temperatures in the single digits
are forecast by Wednesday morning. Record low temperatures could
be in jeopardy over the north. The current forecast low at Mason
City is 9 degrees, which would tie the current record last set in
1995. Wind chill values over northern Iowa may dip into the minus
5 to minus 10 degree range!

The forecast remains generally cold through the extended. Thursday
is currently being advertised as the warmest day with some low 50s
reaching southern Iowa. Both the ECMWF and the GFS are not
dropping a strong cold front into Iowa by the afternoon so any
highs will likely be around noon or before. The cold weather
generally continues through the weekend. Maybe a glimmer of hope
into next week as a large upper low drops into the Gulf of Alaska.
This system would force ridging to the east and finally dislodge
the Hudson Bay low and allowing warmer temperatures to finally
arrive.
