Potential for moderate to rather heavy snow with a very quick changeover occurring late tonight and early Saturday morning as tremendous lift result and dynamic cooling aiding in the process. The main challenge yet tonight is the axis of higher qpf...and the timing and extent of the changeover. Currently thinking that a band of heavy snow will extend across the northeast of 8 to 10 inches with locally higher amounts possible from near Mason City southwest to about Waterloo/Grundy County. Just west of the heaviest snow about 6 inches or more will be possible from portions of the northwest Iowa to about Highway 30 in the southeast of the heavier zone of snow. Southwest of there amounts of 1 to 5 inches buffering the area of heavier snowfall. One important aspect of this storm will be the sharp cutoff of high end snowfall to lower end snowfall. First things first: Snowfall amounts have been raised and we may not be done yet. H850 analysis tonight continues to show beginnings of substantial moisture plume heading north from the Gulf. All the models are now hinting at qpf amounts well over an inch and also now focusing a more narrow area of 1.5 to 2 inches of qpf near the head of the H700 upper level low tracking east across the region late tonight into Saturday. Timing of the upper level feature varies as well as thermal structure...and to some degree the location. With that said there remains a pretty strong signal for a corridor of very heavy wet snow once the changeover occurs. For today we will see the initial warm air advection band cross the region with light rain moving through the morning and early afternoon with warm air advection. As the main system approaches later this afternoon increasing thetae advection will increase light precipitation through the afternoon and rapidly increase by 00z. Tonight much of the precipitation will initially be rain with thunder possible across the south. Later in the evening dynamic cooling will begin over the northwest and change the rain to snow. The process will continue overnight east southeast with time as the H700 low tracks east across the state. Meanwhile a pronounced upper level boundary will act to lift air parcels quickly as a 40 to 50kt east southeast wind at H850 feeds the boundary. Soundings show extensive lift and hint at some elevated instability. Though planer views of EPVg are not producing a consistent signal for slantwise convection this is still a possibility. The lift and nearly isothermal soundings from near MIW to ALO and MCW and regions near and northeast of here suggest that the changeover to snow may occur earlier...late this evening and continue overnight through at least 18z and once it changes over snowfall rates and accumulations will be rapid...likely a inch per hour at times. Both the GFS/NAM show a pronounced trowal structure between H850-700 holding on over this area during Saturday morning into the afternoon...with the Euro actually adding another 1 inch of qpf on Saturday while the GFS/NAM are also holding onto more qpf. This is concerning and will need to see if the trends continue today as this would definitely add to totals. The other concern now is the wind. Winds may approach 20 to 25 mph with higher gusts over 30 mph late tonight lessening a bit on Saturday but still ranging from 15 to 25 mph. The character of this snow will be very wet and heavy. If it has time to collect on objects it may load trees and other objects will heavy wet snow making the potential for power outages more possible. After highs today in the 40s to near 50 temperatures tonight will cool to the lower 30s north to the mid 30s south. Highs tomorrow will be highly dependent on the continuation of snow in the morning and potentially will be lower than currently forecast. .LONG TERM.../Saturday night through Thursday/ Issued at 337 AM CDT Fri Mar 23 2018 After a brief respite Saturday night and Sunday as the first system moves off...Iowa and much of the Upper Midwest will be under the influence of an upper ridge. However there is a deep trough off the west coast that will be moving into the Rockies. The surface response will be to develop and deepen a low over the Rockies putting Iowa in a southeast flow and a return of moisture. By mid afternoon Sunday theta-e advection returns to southwest Iowa and increases as the ribbon moves east. Rain will likely develop across western Iowa and move into part of our forecast area certainly by late day. Sunday night that deepening surface low over the Rockies will make it's way into the central Plains with pretty strong forcing and decent instability working into Iowa. Rain will increase and spread across the state and while better instability will remain west and south an isolated thunderstorm may develop across far southern/southwest Iowa late evening or overnight. There will be a transition zone set up somewhere across Iowa...likely a northwest to southeast band where rain/freezing rain and snow or sleet will all occur as warm air aloft begins to move across Iowa. Monday afternoon into Monday night the surface low will lift northeast. Warm air will surge northeastward ahead of a cold front that will move across the state. There will be enough instability and deep moisture that we should see some storms over the southeast third to half of the state. We should see much better chances for thunderstorms Monday afternoon. I had to nudge wording up to chance of storms. Pretty strong shear works into the area by late day though this time of year, storms tend to weaken by evening. Will be watching the potential for a few stronger storms though and this time of year, hail comes pretty easy. Qpf is of some concern leading to hydrologic issues. If we see the kind of snowfall we are forecasting then have temps warm into the mid 40s over that area Monday...with 50s and 60s south and west, we will see melting snow that will have a lot of water content and additional areas of moderate rainfall with any storms. There will be a need to watch rivers and a potential for rapid rises in streams. The system will finally push east on Tuesday with a quieter albeit slightly cooler period expected for the remainder of the long term forecast. && .AVIATION.../For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night/ Issued at 1154 PM CDT Thu Mar 22 2018 VFR conditions are in place across the forecast area at 06z with varied levels of cloud coverage and height. These conditions should not change much early this morning, however clouds should gradually lower with light rain spreading NW to SE toward midday Friday. The combination of lowering ceilings, precipitation and possibly some fog will drop conditions to at least MVFR and likely IFR due to visibilities as the precipitation and/or fog increase.
