...Prolonged Winter Precipitation This Weekend...

.A winter storm system will impact Iowa from tonight into Sunday,
spreading rain, freezing rain, and snow across the state. 
Precipitation will begin from south to north as light rain and 
freezing rain tonight, then change to snow from northwest to 
southeast on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night before ending 
late Sunday. Moderate to heavy snow accumulations are possible 
over northern Iowa west of Interstate 35. The snow may initially 
be very heavy and wet and may cause tree damage and subsequent 
power outages. In addition, gusty northeast winds will cause areas
of blowing snow that will reduce visibility. This wind also may 
enhance the potential for tree damage where the heavy and wet snow
occurs.

have expanded the advisory to include nearly all of the forecast
area except for the far northeast. Also went ahead and extended
the advisory until 10am which still may not be enough, as feel
some of the fog may improve some above dense criteria, but may
linger through much of the day. Slick spots still possible from
frosty patches of fog deposits freezing on roads, bridges and
sidewalks.

.SHORT TERM.../Today/

A large area of surface high pressure is in place across the state
early this morning with a large low stratus deck continuing to
progress slowly southward across northern and northwestern Iowa.
Some patchy dense fog is occurring near the edge of the advancing
stratus with visibilities improving some as the clouds move in.
Further south along the southern half of the forecast area mainly
clear skies or some high clouds are in place with dense fog
developing as with moist air in place across the snowpack and frozen
ground and abundance residual moisture from the light rain earlier
Thursday. Some slick spots were already being reported from the wet
pavement getting frosty/freezing spots. Additional slick spots
likely with the dense fog as much of the sites along and south of
Hwy 30 at 1/2 mile or less. Therefore could have some fog deposits
on surfaces creating slick spots on roads, bridges and sidewalks.
The fog will likely continue into the mid morning hours before
improving some by late morning. Some concern of it lifting some, but
still sticking around through much of the day. Will have to monitor
and address that later this morning. WAA should allow for milder
temps today into the mid to upper 30s, but warming will be tempered
with the fog and stratus.

.LONG TERM.../Tonight through Thursday/

Similar to last night, the focus in the longer term was on the
weekend storm. The trough of low pressure has dug into the southwest
US per water vapor imagery and derived motion winds from GOES-East.
As the wave moves onto the southern Plains today, the trough will
take on a negative tilt and close off at 500mb with surface low
pressure developing on the lee of the Rockies over southeast
Colorado and then eventually lifting northeastward. Soundings show
mid-level dry air that will take a bit of time to saturate so
have slowed the precipitation arrival by a few hours from previous
forecast this evening. High resolution models and indications in
global models suggest there will be a first wave of precipitation
that moves up this evening. This appears to be tied to
frontogenesis in the 700-500mb layer best shown in the NAM and to
a lesser extent in the GFS. There may be a lull of a few hours
over southern to central Iowa in the precipitation where there is
drizzle if anything. Then, a stronger surge of theta-e advection
will push northward into the state coupled with strong Q-vector
convergence that should lead to widespread precipitation. Of
course, precipitation type is still a point of contention in the
forecast. With the first wave of precipitation over central and
southern Iowa, there may be a brief window of a wintry mix before
warmer air switches the precipitation to rain. Farther north over
northern Iowa, a more prolonged wintry mix is expected due to a
warm wedge of air aloft and near to below freezing near surface
layer. Only a slight adjustment was made to the watch to start the
time a few hours later over the far north with precipitation not
starting until later this evening. Otherwise, held off on any
advisory or warning headlines with main impacts expected late
tonight if not Saturday.

For Saturday, surface low pressure will move up into northwest
Missouri toward midday. Temperatures were adjusted closer to CONSRaw
as initial guidance was a few degrees too warm given the persistent
expected precipitation. While rain will be ongoing over southern
Iowa with thunder possible per NAM and GFS soundings as far north as
perhaps Interstate 80, northern Iowa will still be in the midst of a
wintry mix favoring freezing rain. Soundings at MCW and FOD show
that there is some drier air in the mid-levels below the ice
introduction layer. As this layer saturates toward midday into the
afternoon hours, dynamic cooling in this layer will help to
transition the precipitation over to snow over this area. With a
deep layer of just below freezing, the snow could be in a favored
region of dendrites with strong omega producing a heavy, wet snow.
Winds were upped in line with CONSMOS, though may not be enough.
Regardless, northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph will certainly blow
around the falling snow and create visibility reductions along
with plastering the snow to trees. The combination of the heavy
wet snow on trees with gusty winds may cause some power outages.

As the upper low begins to shear out and lift out of the area
Saturday night into Sunday, this will allow colder air to fill into
the state with precipitation eventually change over to snow across
all of central Iowa before ending Sunday night. Still could see a
short period on the tail end of the precipitation where freezing
drizzle occurs as drier air moves into the ice introduction layer.
But for now, have kept all snow mention on the back side as the
precipitation winds down Sunday night.

Monday and beyond, colder air will settle into the state with a
front passing through late in the week that may bring some light
snow and perhaps a reinforcing shot of cold air to end the week.

.AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon/

Very involved forecast this period with multiple aviation impacts
expected and only medium confidence. Initially IFR/LIFR fog
and/or stratus remains in place across portions of western and
northern IA, including KFOD and KMCW. Minor improvement may occur
into this afternoon, but conditions should deteriorate again to
IFR/LIFT by tonight and also expand again area wide. An
approaching low pressure system is also expected to move through
the Plains spreading rain into southern IA and a wintry mix north.
The deep approaching low pressure system will also sharply
increase easterly flow just aloft introducing LLWS to some
locations.

...Areas of Fog will Persist through the Morning...

Conditions continue to gradually improve but widespread fog of varied
degrees remains in place across portions of northern and western
Iowa. This includes Interstates 35 and 80 north and west of Des
Moines. In some locations the fog will be dense with visibilities
below a half mile. The visibilities should improve to at least a
mile or two in most locations by noon however.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down and allow for extra distance
between vehicles.
