.SHORT TERM.../Today through Tonight/

Today:
Fog and stratus expected for much of the day with increasing
low level moisture and strong southerly low level flow off the Gulf.
Some pockets of dense fog currently with a few locations with vsbys
dropped to around 1/2 to 1/4 mile, will continue to monitor for
possible dense fog advisory. Hi-res models support the expansion of
the low vsby fog across much of the forecast area through the
morning hours before having it diminish into this afternoon. For now
have stuck with the areas of fog mention and will continue to
monitor trends through sunrise. Strong waa today with southerly to
southwesterly winds increasing ahead of the storm system for tonight
into Thursday. Therefore should again see temps well above average
today with much of the forecast area into the 40s to around 50 even
with the stratus/fog today given current temps still in the mid 30s.
Some weak energy aloft ejects northeastward today with some
isentropic lift setting up across the far south that could lead to a
spotty shower developing across the southern/eastern forecast area
this afternoon.

Tonight into Thursday:
Scenario remains similar as in past nights
with overall precip types, frontal passage, amounts etc. Biggest
changes continue to be on placement with the models coming in a bit
further east/south with the track of the heavier snow band. The
biggest issue regarding this system though continues to be the
strong push of cold air and gusty winds on the back side of this
system. Given overall snow amounts in the light to moderate range,
the gusty winds creating the blowing and drifting snow and reducing
visibilities especially in rural areas will make for hazardous
travel conditions across much of the northern/western portions of
the forecast area. Even in areas that are not expected to receive
much snow toward the DSM/ALO metro area and points southeast, there
will be a period of time where icy conditions can be expected and
some reduction in visibilities as the snow sets in and northwest
winds increase. With snow amounts generally around an inch or less
in the aforementioned areas, prolonged visibility reductions from
blowing snow not expected but a few hour period surrounding the time
of transition to snow is possible. Additional travel headaches
outside the watch area possible as temperatures rapidly fall behind
the front and icy conditions occur from the initial wintry mix/snow
freezing to surfaces including walkways and roads. This timing is
expected to happen during the morning commute hours in both the
Waterloo/Des Moines areas.

Further northwest in the watch area, a band of heavier snow expected
to develop along a line from around the Denison area northeastward
toward Fort Dodge, Algona and Forest City. Still some possibility of
this heavy band to shift some in the next 12-24 hours, as the track
of the sfc low becomes more defined as it lifts across western and
central Iowa late Wednesday night. Deformation zone then in place
across the western/northwestern half of the state into early
Thursday as the mid-level trough moves through aloft. Strong push of
CAA and strong pressure rises on the backside to contribute to the
increasing winds. Largest isallobaric push will come across the
southwest but overall NAM has around 6-8mb 3 hr pressure rises which
are all decent to get blustery conditions. Much of the area could
see advisory criteria sustained winds and gusts, which could lead to
considerable amounts of blowing and drifting snow in the watch area.
Concern though centers around the type of snow expected as thermal
profiles suggest initial onset of snow to be more wet, heavy with
snow ratios of around 6 to 8:1, with increasing snow ratios as the
column cools and the lift taps into the DGZ. Therefore not sure how
well the heavier wet snow will blow. This should still only result
in maybe a difference of widespread 1/2 mile vsbys versus 1/4 mile
to near zero if the snow was drier, lighter but the near
blizzard/blizzard conditions can't be completely ruled out.

Snow will begin to taper off during the afternoon hours, with winds
diminishing toward late afternoon which should allow for
visibilities to improve quickly through the afternoon hours. Some
icy conditions on roadways may continue into the late afternoon
hours due to earlier conditions.

.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Tuesday/

Following the precip will be the onset of another arctic blast for
Thursday night.  We are looking at lows in the single digits above
and below zero for central Iowa and with winds still in the 15 to 25
mph range, we will likely see a period of blowing snow which will
have the most impact from Mason City through Audubon but also wind
chill values will be dropping to around 25 below across the far
north.  Additional headlines for the bitter cold may be required
after the current headlines for the winter storm.

On the heels of the Wednesday night/Thursday system will be another
weaker system to impact the state Friday night and Saturday.
Confidence is not very high at this point because models vary quite
a bit on solutions.  The Euro model wants to weaken the wave as it
comes into Iowa and drop it south.  The result of which would be
some light snow over a small part of the west before diminishing and
dropping south.  The GFS has the wave a little more robust with
better qpf and as cold as it would be a tenth of an inch of liquid
would produce a couple inches of snow so definitely hints at
something to watch.  The next wave drops into the state around
Sunday.  This one is being advertised as pretty robust by all models
and would produce widespread snow across the state.

The passage of that system will put the region in deep northerly
flow and very cold air will move in.  Highs on Monday will only be
in the single digits above and below zero with lows Monday night
from 5 to 15 below.  Given the expected wind with this reinforcing
surge of cold air, I would anticipate at this point additional
headlines for cold Monday night.  Thankfully this cold snap does not
appear to hang on as long as the last one did.  Upper level ridging
moves in mid to late week so temps will moderate.

.AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon/

Primary concerns this TAF period are fog and low stratus and the
winter storm that will impact the terminals tonight through the
end of the TAF period.

Surface observations, webcams, and GOES-16 day cloud phase
distinction indicate stratus extends back into northwest Missouri
while higher clouds stream overhead. There is also plenty of fog
over much of Iowa. For KMCW, KALO, and KFOD, expect IFR and LIFR
restrictions to persist this afternoon. Farther south, conditions
should improve into a brief period of VFR conditions at KOTM and
later KDSM before returning to IFR or LIFR tonight. As a cold
front approaches and moves through the state later tonight into
tomorrow morning, rain may briefly change to freezing rain before
changing to snow. Winds will switch from the south to from the
northwest with gusts of 25 to 35 knots common behind the front.
With these gusty winds, expect blowing snow to be an issue.
Conditions will begin to slowly improve toward and after the end
of this TAF period.

cold air will rush in during this transition and will likely
freeze wet surfaces creating icy conditions...especially during
the morning commute. Temperatures will be falling through the day
and wind gusts to 45 mph will be possible. Snowfall of an inch or
less is expected but it will fall on icy surfaces. This will hide
slick areas and also make it easy to blow in the strong wind.

Widespread fog will persist this morning. This fog will be locally
dense at times with visibilities below one quarter mile. When
