Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 607 AM CDT Mon Oct 1 2018 .DISCUSSION.../Today through Sunday/ Issued at 421 AM CDT Mon Oct 1 2018 The primary concerns through this period remain convective trends with secondary heat and wind impacts also possible Wednesday. Our current zonal flow and broad southern CONUS ridging will gradually shift eastward and then stall into a higher amplitude western trough/southeast ridge pattern which will remain in place to some degree into early next week. This will keep our temperatures near seasonal normals for the most part with chances for showers and thunderstorms every few days keeping us generally in a wet regime. At onset, a zone of warm/theta-e advection and frontogenetical forcing focused near H85 continues to generate weak convection across northern IA. This is eventually expected to intensify somewhat as kinematic forcing from the approaching WY/Dakotas PV anomaly reaches IA and MN around midday. Surface pressure falls building across the High Plains in response and will eventually lift the current KS/MO warm front into IA. This will create quite the temperature gradient NW-SE with little change expected NW and highs well through the 70s SE. This will also boost instability with some potential for surface based convection with MLCAPEs pushing 1500 j/kg by afternoon. Effective shear may increase to the point that a few elevated strong hail storms occur and there is some potential for severe storms east, included a minimal tornado window, along the front if CIN can be eroded and MLCAPEs realized. The loss of forcing and daytime heating into the evening will allow any convection to diminish during the evening as it exits south and east. This will lead to fair weather Tuesday with minor short wave ridging leading into a extended period of southwest flow aloft. What's left of Rosa will dampen in the flow and be aided by a strong short wave along the northern Plains/Canadian border by midday Wednesday. This will induce strong return flow with temps and moisture quickly flipping back to summer. Highs should be in the 80s with dewpoints well through the 60s, possibly touching 70, leading to atypical heat impacts for early October. There is some concern for severe weather in this airmass, as noted in the SPC Day 3 Slight Risk from central into NE Iowa. Positive aspects will be fairly deep forcing aligned with the boundary and MLCAPEs just exceeding 2K j/kg with 40+kts of deep shear. Some concerns will be soundings showing a nose of 1.5-2km warm air aloft and associated CINH and models not showing development until 00z and after during loss of heating. Thus the Slight Risk is conditional and may be a bit too aggressive on its south and west extent with SREF calibrated severe probs and CIPS analogs better favoring those locations north and east farther removed from the warmer 1.5-2km temps. After another break Thursday, convection chances return again by night with an impressive surge of theta-e advection for nocturnal convection. The boundary is expected to stall SW-NE across Iowa with a steady stream of forcing in the SW flow aloft. With moisture parameter climatologies showing percentiles well through the 90s, this may be a window for heavy rains and will need to be watched. The 00Z ECMWF is most aggressive in this regard keeping the boundary in place Saturday while the GFS is faster pushing the boundary out overnight Friday. Both models then suggest a minor break over the weekend with brief subsidence behind a Great Lakes short wave, but both quickly flip back to warm/theta-e advection at varied degrees to end the weekend with more mature and organized effects from the upstream long wave trough into Monday. Confidence in details is low, but elevated for at least some degree of precip until the front passes beyond the valid period into Tuesday. && .AVIATION.../For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning/ Issued at 607 AM CDT Mon Oct 1 2018 Widespread IFR/LIFR conditions blanket much of central Iowa this morning due to fog, ceilings and precipitation.
