.SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Sunday/

Saturday morning temperatures made it into the upper 30s to mid 40s
across much of the DMX CWA. High pressure passing through Iowa
allowed skies to clear and winds to drop to 5 kts or less. 20z sfc
analysis shows this broad sfc high crossing Lake Michigan into
Michigan. Aloft, the 850mb anticyclonic flow extends southwestward
through southeastern to south-central Iowa. Concurrently height
falls to western/NW Iowa associated with a sfc low slowly coming off
the Rockies in Wyoming heading towards the Dakotas.

Widespread subsidence associated with aforementioned high pressure
has kept Iowa cloud-free today.

Tonight and Tomorrow...
Watching for radiational fog potential. Inhibitor will be winds.
While SE Iowa may be near enough to anticyclonic flow to have
light winds. Height falls start getting into NW/northern Iowa as
the edge of a 20 to 25 kt LLJ overspreads the area. Forecast
soundings from KMCW to KEST to KFOD show unidirectional SW winds
picking up pretty quickly off the deck... thus am thinking fog
should be mitigated across this area. Will focus fog potential to
KLWD to KOTM area for now.

As the sfc low off the Rockies continues to build and propagate
westward, WAA will continue to infiltrate Iowa. At 12z Sat, 850mb
temps were around +10C. By 12z Sun, 850mb temps should be around
+15C. Ultimately, this will support sfc temperatures around 5 to 10
degrees warmer on Sunday than what they were on Saturday. Completely
sunny skies expected for Sunday as well.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday night through Saturday/

All eyes turn to aforementioned coming off the Rockies. The track of
this low looks to be decently northeastward... as the center of the
low should be near the Minnesota/Canada border near 18z Mon. The
past few days have featured an attendant cold front that propagates
through Iowa sometime Monday afternoon/evening through Tuesday
morning. Interestingly, the timing and location of this boundary
looks very similar to this past Thursday's event that produced
widespread severe wx across NW/northern Iowa. Big difference,
however, in the ingredients. The previous event had a huge
anticyclone from 850mb-300mb positioned over Arkansas to help surge
moisture into Iowa via a 50+ LLJ. For this event, the current low
pressure area over eastern Texas should remain in place, effectively
shutting off the Gulf. Both Forecast MUCAPE  and DCAPE values
struggle to reach 1000 J/KG with the boundary. Low-level lapse rates
struggle to even reach 7 C/km... with sunset earlier, this window
will close rapidly. Forecast soundings and other heavy rain
parameters do not support very efficient rain produces. Ultimately,
am thinking isolated thunder/lightning the biggest hazard from this
fropa and do not envision the SPC upgrading beyond a 'marginal risk'.

Interestingly, the past several model runs have trended towards
stalling out the boundary into Tuesday. It may actually turn out
that Tuesday afternoon/evening brings the bigger severe wx threat to
the DMX CWA of this fropa. The 12z Sat GFS is notably the slowest
model output, keeping the boundary from around KLWD to Tama county
or so. The 12z Sat NAM more favors the ECMWF, but all models have
had a slowing trend. Still some time between now and Tuesday, so
lots of fluctuation possible... but the Texas "blocking low" looks
to break down by Tuesday, so there will likely be more juice for any
storms to work with. A 'Slight Risk' for severe wx may be warranted
in SE Iowa... but again, lots of time and not a lot of agreement
with solutions at this time.

Wednesday and Beyond...
CAA fills in behind this boundary as high pressure pushes into
the upper Midwest. The stay of this high pressure in the upper
Midwest looks to be short-lived as long-range models in good
agreement with blasting a shortwave across southern Canada
Thursday. At this time, it appears the Gulf is shut off again for
this shortwave, so severe/heavy rainfall threat initially not
looking impressive. Northern Iowa looks to be impacted by this
wave, and central- southern Iowa may be dry.

Heading into the weekend, a more fall-like pattern emerges with the
Hudson Bay upper low gyre machine being flipped on. Could see
several quick shots of precip. Arctic air is lining up on the
backside of this longwave trough...
