Well, cool air has finally arrived for the first time this season.
A classic autumn front with robust cold air advection behind it
has led to strong/gusty northwest winds and persistent
stratocumulus generation across Iowa today. While the wind gusts
have been higher than originally anticipated, gusts reaching
advisory criteria have been few and far between. Temperatures have
been held in check, rising only slowly into the mid 50s north to
mid 60s southeast this afternoon.

The large, cool post-frontal high pressure area currently centered
over South Dakota will slide across northern Iowa tonight,
allowing winds to drop off rapidly after sunset. Temperatures will
fall to easily the lowest levels in four months or more, reaching
low to mid 40s in most of our forecast area. In far northern Iowa
where the ridge axis is directly overhead and winds go calm a few
readings in the upper 30s are possible, but given the heavy rain
that has fallen in that area in recent days it is believed the
surface moisture will help hold dewpoints and thus temperatures up
just a bit and have stuck with lows in the 40 degree range.

Saturday is going to be a beautiful day, if a bit cool. As the
surface high moves off to the east winds will turn to the
southeast but remain modest, around 10 mph or less for the most
part. Stratocumulus clouds will develop once again by mid/late
morning, but with the cold air advection shut off these should be
more limited and allow for partly to mostly sunny skies in most
areas. Temperatures will probably hold in the mid to upper 60s.

while a broad low pressure trough will develop far to the west in
the lee of the Rockies. This will place Iowa within persistent
southerly low- level flow beneath benign zonal to somewhat
southwesterly flow aloft. This will result in gradual warming and
nearly clear skies, with high temperatures rebounding into the 70s
on Sunday and possibly nearing 80 in a few locations on Monday.

From Monday night through Friday we will see a proverbial wave
train of troughs repeating every few days, which is somewhat
typical of this transition period between seasons. Each mid-level
trough will be accompanied by a surface front that will bring rain
chances, followed by breezy and cool weather, then slow warming as
southerly flow returns ahead of the next trough. The first round
of rain chances will come from late Monday into Tuesday and the
second will come around Wednesday night or Thursday. As the first
wave approaches late Monday and Monday night we should see meager
instability, but still sufficient for thunderstorms, and given
relatively strong flow/shear fields there is a possibility that
some strong/severe updrafts could develop. However, the weakness
of the instability and the expected diurnal timing of the front
would seem to mitigate this threat substantially. With the second
wave around Thursday there is even less instability and only
showers are anticipated, perhaps with isolated thunder. Daily
highs will range in the 60s and 70s with morning lows in the 40s
and 50s all week.

evening as high pressure arrives from the northwest. The wind will
