Issued at 658 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Still seeing scattered to numerous showers with a few embedded thunderstorms pivot slowly southward through south-central Iowa as of 7pm. Received a few reports of funnel clouds late this afternoon but at this point nothing that reached the ground or produced any damage. With the loss of diurnal heating /and low level instability/ expect the threat for any additional funnel clouds to diminish by sunset. Otherwise...latest short term guidance and CAM solutions continue to depict a continuation of scattered showers through the overnight hours as weak disturbances rotate around the parent upper low now centered over nrn Missouri. QPF amounts should generally be light so not expecting any additional flooding impacts. Low temps in the upper 50s to low 60s look reasonable. && .SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Friday/ Issued at 354 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Behemoth upper low continues to propagate southeastward and should be firmly into far southeastern Illinois by 12z Friday. With the departure of this upper low so shall instability, forcing, etc. depart. As was the case yesterday, all general model consensus has an excellent handle on the progression of this system. Meanwhile, a ribbon of instability is passing through central to eastern Iowa from north to south this evening. There was a public report of a funnel (not associated with any severe weather) at 1030 am south of Waterloo, but no reports since the typing of this section of this AFD. Best 0-3km CAPE, 0-3km lapse rates, sfc vorticity, etc. is in southeastern Iowa to Illinois, with perhaps a sliver of these good ingredients touching into east-central Iowa. Best window will close by 7 pm this evening. In all, am not expecting more than 1 or 2, if that many, tors/funnels. Precip-wise, around one quarter of an inch of rain on average will likely fall with this band... well short of any significant amounts that would lead to flash flooding/flooding concerns. Tomorrow... Temperatures will be a little tricky as clouds depart Iowa from north to south throughout the daytime hours. Looking to central Minnesota for the source region, plus BUFKIT soundings, scattered to broken mid-level clouds seem likely across Iowa behind the low- level stratus. Forecast highs are a perfect example of isolation effects as northern Iowa will likely be warmer than southern Iowa due to insolation differences as the clouds linger longer in southern Iowa. .LONG TERM.../Friday night through Thursday/ Issued at 354 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 This Weekend... 20z Water vapor imagery picking up on a well-defined upper low/open wave spinning over southern Idaho. Medium to Long range models have this open wave propagating through Iowa Sunday. Ahead of this wave will be a slow-moving sfc high that should be over southern Iowa. This sfc high will serve to bring dry NE flow to the upper Midwest that should inhibit sfc/low-level moisture transport that could be used for this open wave. At this time, have low-end POPs in the forecast, but confidence is not great. 850mb temps are near the +15C range, which is near-normal for this time of year. Given scattered clouds, expecting near-normal temperatures to be a good temperature forecast. Monday Through Wednesday... For the past several days, long-range models have had a very strong signal for rain during the Monday and Tuesday timeframe. Today's model runs have done nothing to change those beliefs. By Monday night/Tuesday morning, a closed upper low is slated to be over NW Iowa. Meanwhile, a well-defined and broad anticyclonic wind field from 850-300mb is set up along the Louisiana coastline. A strong 50kt LLJ looks to be well phased with this upper low and will easily blast significant moisture into Iowa. There has consistently been a wide swath of PWATs in the 2 to 2.25 inch range across central to southern Iowa. SPC climatology would have this in a maximum return range. Some mesoscale features starting to come into focus slightly... a leading warm advection wing/band may push through Monday afternoon from SW to NE, with the warm sector filling in with precip as the LLJ surges into Iowa overnight into Tuesday. In all, several rounds of precip appears likely, with heavy rainfall very possible. With strong WAA/moisture advection, temperatures will likely return to the 90s, with dewpoints reaching into the 70s. && .AVIATION.../For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening/ Issued at 638 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Expect MVFR and occasional IFR conditions to persist overnight due to low CIGs pivoting around an upper level low pressure system over Missouri. Will also see scattered showers overnight which could produce brief reductions in visibility in heavy precip cores. With the loss of heating...most if not all thunderstorm activity should end after sunset.
