Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 345 PM CDT Tue Apr 3 2018 .SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Wednesday/ Issued at 214 PM CDT Tue Apr 3 2018 Forecast Confidence...Medium/High Strong upper level shortwave and associated sfc low will continue to track off to the east overnight with high pressure building in its wake. Still expecting a couple more hours of light to moderate snow across northern Iowa /mainly north of US20/ as another band of snow associated with the upper low moves through the area. Additional snow amounts should be rather light...maybe another inch or two. However winds are showing a definite uptick as of 3pm with sustained northwest winds in the 15 to 25 mph range and gusts approaching 40-45 mph. Thus...webcams across northern counties are now showing some blowing/drifting snow. At this point...will keep the Winter Storm Warning in place although it is possible we could cancel it later this evening. Along and south of the US 20 corridor...impacts have been more muted due to road/ground temps near or above freezing and generally less intense snowfall rates. However...with colder air advecting into the region and winds increasing could see some residual minor impacts through 7pm or so as the tail end of the snow band pivots through. Tonight...the snow will gradually end from west to east late this evening...with partial clearing overnight. Overnight lows will be darn right cold...in fact a few record to near record low temperatures will be possible /see Climate section below./ Wednesday...surface high pressure will build into the area with quiet but cold conditions more typical of early February vs early April. High temperatures will range from the upper 20s in the snow covered north to perhaps 40F in the far south. .LONG TERM.../Wednesday night through Tuesday/ Issued at 214 PM CDT Tue Apr 3 2018 Forecast Confidence: Medium Upper level pattern in the longer range will continue to be dominated by broad troughing in the east and ridging along the west coast. Thus the upper Midwest...including Iowa will remain in a cold and moist northwest upper flow pattern right into the upcoming weekend. 12z deterministic models coming into better agreement showing a weak isentropically driven WAA precip event on Wednesday night into early Thursday mainly across eastern Iowa. QPF amounts should be rather light...but could yield light snow amounts. Another more potent wave moving along a mid-level baroclinic zone will yield another precip event over southern Iowa Thursday night into Friday. Still some uncertainty with the exact track and placement of this system but would not be surprised to see some areas pick up accumulation snow. H8 temps falling into the teens below zero will result in very chilly conditions in the 20s and 30s on Friday...with only a very slight moderation into the 30s to near 40 on Saturday. Finally...still keeping an eye on yet another potent system into the upcoming weekend. 12Z GFS/ECMWF/Canadian are all in reasonable agreement depicting anywhere from 0.25-0.75" of QPF. Thermal profiles still support a majority of this pcpn falling as snow...so significant snow accumulations are a possibility. With this system still being nearly a week away, things can obviously change so please keep up with later forecasts on this system. && .AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon/ Issued at 1241 PM CDT Tue Apr 3 2018 Late season winter storm continues to impact the area today. Widespread IFR to LIFR conditions can be expected through early evening due to a combination of low CIGS and occasional VSBYS due to falling snow and fog. As the system tracks off to the east, expect a gradual improvement to MVFR conditions and then to VFR as we approach Wednesday morning. The other concern will be the development of strong and gusty northwest winds this afternoon and evening. Expect winds of 15 to 30 knots with higher gusts.
