Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 630 AM CDT Fri May 4 2018 .SHORT TERM.../Today through Tonight/ Issued at 330 AM CDT Fri May 4 2018 Upper wave moving through aloft and will continue to push eastward into the Great Lakes/southern Canada through the day. Surface low currently centered across southern Wisconsin and will also quickly move east with high pressure building into the state today. Some lingering showers across the north/west currently with the passage of the upper trough aloft. CAMS showing these showers to continue to move east and dissipate some as they move east through sunrise. Therefore expected mainly dry conditions through the remainder of the day into this evening. A weak impulse embedded in the northwest flow pattern aloft to approach the state by late tonight. This weak system will mainly bring some increasing mid/high clouds to the state toward early Saturday morning. Otherwise mainly sunny skies expected today with the current cloudiness expected to quickly clear the area through the mid morning hours. Weak CAA today into tonight with h85 temps dropping to around +9C expected today with drier air moving through as well. Therefore kept max temps similar to the previous forecast with most sites into the mid 70s, but did dry out dewpoints some as expect somewhat drier air to mix down through the afternoon hours. May see some initially gusty winds this morning, with winds diminishing some into the afternoon as the sfc pressure gradient begins to relax with the area of high pressure building in. Some potential for fire weather issues today with the drier sfc RH values across the north this afternoon. However feel these will be limited and somewhat mitigated by the diminishing winds and wet fuels from the rainfall over the past few days. .LONG TERM.../Saturday through Thursday/ Issued at 330 AM CDT Fri May 4 2018 Upper level northwest flow will prevail through this weekend into early next week before a slow moving shortwave trough moves through at midweek. For the start of this weekend, temperatures will be a good 10 degrees above normal with highs near or a few degrees above 80 on Saturday. Clouds will increase later in the day from the north as a cold front approaches from the same direction. This front will bring chances for showers or thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon over far northern Iowa and then farther south Saturday night. 0-6km bulk shear values of 20 to 25 knots are not impressive and favor non-supercells with MLCAPEs of 500 to perhaps 1000 J/kg before sunset. Better forcing per negative Q-vector divergence remains off to the northeast over Wisconsin. At this point, not seeing much in the way of strong convection. As this cold front drops south of the state on Sunday, will see precipitation chances wane with subsidence arriving and high pressure building in from the north. Temperatures on Sunday will be about 10 degrees lower than Saturday in the upper 60s over northern Iowa to middle 70s over central and southern Iowa. Seasonable temperatures will persist through the middle part of next week. A robust shortwave trough will slowly approach from the northern Rockies Monday night with increasing forcing impinging on central Iowa by early Tuesday. This will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms chances back to central Iowa on Tuesday lingering into Wednesday before drier air and subsidence arrive later Wednesday night. && .AVIATION.../For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning/ Issued at 630 AM CDT Fri May 4 2018 Showers have pretty much ended across the area with some high clouds remaining. These should clear out of the area through mid morning with clear skies expected for the remainder of the forecast period. Some high clouds may push into KMCW toward 12z Saturday.
