A frontal boundary has moved south of the region this evening. 
Though thunderstorms may develop over the region later tonight...

The threat for widespread heavy rainfall has diminished over the 
region tonight. However...some additional showers and scattered 
thunderstorms may still bring brief heavy rains to the area with 
up to an inch of rainfall in a short period of time. This may
cause some ponding of water on area streets and interstates and
periods of lower visibility impacting travel from time to time. 

If traveling late this evening and brief heavy rainfall is
encountered...use extra caution while driving...slow down and 
avoid be mindful of ponding water on roads which may cause 
hydroplaning of vehicles and loss of control.

.DISCUSSION.../Tonight through Thursday/
Issued at 344 PM CDT Thu Jul 12 2018

Very warm and humid conditions across much of central Iowa. Heat
advisory headlines will continue through early this evening.
Cooler conditions are expected for much of central and northern
Iowa for Friday. Southern Iowa should have temperatures fall back
into the upper 60s to around 70 overnight then have dew points
mainly in the upper 60s to low 70s. This would push heat index
values into the 100 to 105 range which at this point of mid summer
would not require a headline extension. Should the heat be more
extreme than expected, than a short term headline may be
warranted for Friday over the far south.

Nearly stationary surface boundary over southern Minnesota into
southeast South Dakota and north central Nebraska this afternoon
will be the focus for thunderstorms this evening then storms
remaining mostly post frontal overnight and out of the forecast
area. Therefore have limited storm chances to the very far north
and at this time the threat for severe weather and heavy rainfall
is low through tonight. Another area of scattered thunderstorms
has developed in the vicinity of a weak convergent line over
western Missouri. There is a region of cumulus development
occurring just south of the Iowa border. It is possible that an
isolated storm or two reaches far south central Iowa so will need
to monitor and possible add PoPs. No severe weather is expected
though.

The boundary to the north will continue to sag into central Iowa
on Friday as a shortwave approaches from the west. Expect an up
tick in thunderstorm development especially by the afternoon over
northwest/north central Iowa then expand into central and southern
Iowa Friday night into Saturday. Again, while a few severe storms
are possible, the potential for heavy rainfall remains the
greatest threat. Slow moving storms along a slow moving boundary
and a saturated airmass with deep warm cloud depths suggest the
potential for heavy rainfall once again. Rainfall amounts of 1 to
3 inches are possible and cannot discount the potential for
localized 5 inches or more occurring. Storm chances will shift
into southern Iowa during the day Saturday and into Saturday
night.

Another strong short wave and surface boundary will arrive
sometime Sunday into Sunday night and will bring another round of
thunderstorm chances. Cooler conditions will arrive following this
system with high temperatures in the upper 70s to mid 80s early to
mid next week.

Main convection continues just along/north of the IA-MN border.
Overnight some tendency to drift south and most likely only
affecting KFOD/KMCW prior to weakening around 10 to 12z. With
front sagging south Friday...increasing risk of VCTS aft 16z north
sites KFOD/KMCW/KALO gradually working south through KDSM/KOTM
from 20 to 02z with additional convection possible south sites aft
03z as low level jet intensifies. Will need to monitor trends most
of the period given mesoscale influences...and lower confidence in

Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible across the area
Friday into Saturday along with isolated regions with 5 inches or
more. Renewed river flooding or flash flooding are possible should
the heavier amounts occur. The upper Des Moines river basin
remains in flood though stages are falling. Any additional heavy
rainfall would bring rises back to the basin. At this time, no new
River forecasts above flood stage with the latest 24 hrs of QPF
added.
