.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday)

Very cold Arctic air has settled into the Northland this morning.
Air temperatures are well below zero. Bitter wind chills of 25 to
40 below zero will affect central and northeast Minnesota, and
areas of far northwest Wisconsin, this morning. There will be
improvement, although somewhat minimal, later this morning into
the afternoon thanks to plentiful sunshine. High pressure will
move from the Northern High Plains to the Central Plains today,
and resulting in a switch from our light northwest flow to brisk
westerly flow by this afternoon. This dry westerly flow will help
maintain the sunshine. Air temperatures will claw back to the
lower single digits above zero this afternoon, yet wind chills
will be about 5 to 15 below zero.
Cirrus will begin spreading in from the north this afternoon in
advance of an approaching cold front from the north. This front
will graze the Borderland area of far northern Minnesota, and it
could bring light snow to areas near the Canadian border. Sunday
night looks cold with partially cloudy skies across the north and
Lake Superior region, and clearer skies to the south. Overnight
lows will around 10 degrees below zero, and wind chills could
flirt with very cold readings of 25 below zero.
Another Arctic cold front will pass through the Northland Monday
morning and afternoon from the northwest. Monday will be another
cold day with highs ranging from the the single digits above
zero in northern Minnesota to the lower teens in northwest
Wisconsin and nearby areas of Minnesota.

A persistent, broad long wave trough over the central and eastern
CONUS dominates the long term portion of the forecast, with
shortwaves within the flow producing waves of snow moving across
the Midwest through the period. It also means we will have
generally near to below normal temperatures through the period.
A large ridge builds into the area at the surface for Monday
night and Tuesday night. With the existing cold airmass, fairly
fresh snow cover and likely clearing skies have pushed down the
min temperatures Monday night. For now have the coldest values
around 20 below, but would not be surprised if these need to be
lowered still farther if the ideal conditions materialize.
Tuesday night and Wednesday a weak shortwave moves through across
the region to the south of the forecast area, bringing a small
chance of pops across our far south. The cloud cover with it
should keep temperatures from dropping off too sharply, and have
kept close to guidance values for this period.
Thursday through Friday there is lots of model spread on a
shortwave moving out of the Montana Rockies, then moving across
the Midwest, bringing a period of snow to the region. With the
exception of the Canadian, the 00z models have been slower with
this wave than the 12z runs, which were faster than the runs
before that. Ensemble plots are still quite spaghetti like, so
have pretty low confidence in the timing or track of this wave,
though there should be something in that time range as the
baroclinic zone remains in the area and there should be a wave
that moves through the region. Models have been bringing some
pretty high pops into the area, but am not confident enough it it
to go much higher than chance, so have trimmed back the pops a
little and we will wait and see how things evolve.
Next weekend we should have another surface ridge build into the
area, and with the upper level pattern still showing northwest
flow aloft, it looks like another cold weekend.

High pressure will remain in control across the Northland
throughout the period. A weak trough/front will move through
overnight and into Monday, but the result should just be a bit of
an increase in mid and high level clouds. Some broken mid level
clouds will be possible north, but we should generally see high
clouds across the south.
