.SHORT TERM...(Today into Sunday)

...High Wind, Snow, and Blowing Snow to impact Post-Holiday
Travel Friday through Sunday...
Overview: Will break down the short term into three segments to
highlight the revolving High Wind and Winter Weather Hazards set
to take form over the next 72 hours. All of these hazards will
lead to difficult travel conditions due to blowoff/blowover risk,
snow covered roads, and blowing snow likely reducing visibility,
especially in the mountains. Snow will be greatest in the
mountains and west of I-25 with totals of 1-2 feet possible when
all set and done by Sunday. 1-3" of snow could occur across the
High Plains of WY/NE but blowing snow could be more of a hazard
there vs. the shear larger totals in the mountains. Extreme
blowover/blowoff risk for vehicles will start late tonight and
especially on Friday. Winds will decrease slightly overnight
Friday but return again Saturday when the second and more potent
winter storm occurs.
1) First round of mountain snow in the Sierra Madres and Snowys
plus winds increasing this afternoon and into Friday.
A winter weather advisory is in place for the Sierra Madre range
as snow will increase over the higher terrain this afternoon and
continue overnight as the first weather system moves over the
region. Upwards of 4 to 8 inches will possible with this first
round through mid-day Friday when rates tapper off. Pressure
gradients will increase across the wind prone areas in conjunction
with this first system and have converted High Wind Watches over
to warnings starting near noon today. The winds and snow will
continue overnight with winds increasing even further going into
Friday morning and spreading out across the Laramie Range and into
the High Plains.
2) Extreme blowover and blowoff Risk for light, high-profile
vehicles Friday morning into the late afternoon for the mountains,
High Plains of WY, and into Southern NE Panhandle.
Very high winds are expected Friday of 30-50 mph with isolated
gusts in the wind prone areas upwards of 70 mph of I-80
(Arlington) and I-25 (Bordeaux). CPR to CAG and BRX to CAG
gradients remain healthy at 60-70 meters and prove quite adequate
for a strong wind event. Subsidence along with good mixing of
momentum down to the surface are additional favorable factors for
the high wind event. Winds will increase down the Laramie Range
and spread out into the High Plains through the morning and
afternoon. Will likely need to covert the High Wind Watch for NE
over to a Warning next forecast package. Some questions remains if
and when the higher winds will get into the Laramie Valley so
left that zone as a watch currently.
3) Second and more substantial round of mountain snow expected to
start late Friday night, last through Saturday, and end Sunday
morning. Snow will also occur across the High Plains with 1-3"
most probable.
Another potent shortwave trough will shift across WY from the
northwest late Friday and over the weekend. This will bring
sharply colder temperatures Saturday with the passage of a cold
front, bitter wind chills, and heavy mountain snow. Favorable
dynamic and orographic lift for the Snowys and Sierra Madres will
allow for high snow fall totals to be possible. Currently
advertising totals of 1-2' with localized higher amounts for both
rounds. Have extended the Winter Storm Watch into southwest
Carbon County as well as for Saratoga with higher snow fall
amounts being possible in those valleys. Advisories will likely be
needed for additional portions of Albany and Carbon counties for
this system. For the High Plains, 1-3" looks most probable due to
downsloping and quick cut-off of deeper lift farther east vs. the
orographic help in the mountains. Most areas appear to remain
below advisory criteria for now but if light to moderate snow
occurs in conjunction with high winds, impacts from blowing snow
could occur.
The wind and snow event will draw to a close by Sunday morning but
lingering travel impacts will still be possible, especially in
the mountains along I-80.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Wednesday)

No major highlights in the long-term with slow temperature
moderation occurring through mid-week. Region will be under a
shortwave ridge to start the week with H7 temperatures over the
High Plains flipping positive. However, another trough and
frontal passage may bring the next chance of snow mid-week.

VFR conditions will continue for all sites through the period with
the exception of KRWL. With VCSH and -SN overnight and tomorrow
for KRWL, ceilings will fall close to MVFR criteria. Confidence
is not high that it will fall below, but at least noted a drop in
ceilings in the TAF. The concern for the rest of the sites is
high winds and LLWS with the approach of a frontal boundary. Some
locations in southeastern Wyoming may see upwards of 40 to 50 KT
tomorrow bringing the potential for LLWS at low levels and
crosswinds on runways.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Fire danger will remain low as fuels are non-critical at this
time. Humidity values will drop to 15-20 percent this afternoon
across the High Plains while winds increase upwards of 20 to 25
mph. Stronger winds will occur near Bordeaux and Arlington late
this afternoon while humidity does remain low.
Winds will remain high overnight and become very strong Friday
with higher relative humidity values.
Snow will overspread the Sierra Madres and Snowys late Friday
through Saturday and end Sunday with high totals of 1-2 feet
possible. High Plains will not see that much snow but a few
locations could pick up 1-2 inches.
