A moist southwest flow at the surface this morning has lent a hand
towards creating areas of fog and low stratus across portions of
southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle. This area
extends as far west as Laramie, Wyoming and as far north as
Alliance, Nebraska. The densest fog exists across the I-80
stretch from mm320 to 345, west of Cheyenne, for which a fog
advisory has been issued. Fog will burn off by mid-morning today
as increased cloud cover streams in and the surface pressure
gradient tightens; surface winds will become correspondingly gusty
by mid- morning. This will all occur as a deep, cold upper-level
low moves into the region from the west. Showers will begin across
the western portion of the region as early as this afternoon,
extending as far east as the Laramie Range. Snow will seen across
elevations above 10K FT MSL in the Sierra Madres and Snowy Range,
later moving into the northern Laramie Range. By Sunday morning,
precipitation will be noted across the entirety of the region.
Snow levels will have fallen to about 7K FT MSL. Gusty winds out
of the south and southwest will continue through the period ahead
of the Saturday night cold front. Between Saturday and Sunday,
forecast high temperatures will drop by about 10-15 degrees.

Gusty winds continue across much of the region Sunday as a
Colorado surface low passes to the south. Wrap-around moisture and
surface winds from the north will continue the winter weather
threat, bringing hazardous conditions to a larger portion of the
region. Snow levels will have fallen to about 5.5K FT MSL and the
cold surface flow from the north will begin the process of cold
air damming along the Front Range. This will become problematic
as we move into Monday. Soundings are indicating that areas were
cold air damming will occur will either see the threat of freezing
rain or accumulating ice pellets Monday and MOnday evening. These
areas seem to be across the lee- side of the Laramie Range and
the Snowys. By Monday night, the low will have passed to the east
and a cold and drier northerly flow will set in. This will bring
temperatures down through the entire temperature profile for snow
where precip is still occurring. Conditions will dry out under
the northerly flow and a break in precipitation is anticipated for
now ahead of the next system expected towards the end of the
week.

For now, a winter storm watch has been issued beginning today at 3
PM MDT and extending through Monday evening, for snow accumulation
across the mountains and freezing rain mixed with ice pellets
across the lee-side of the Front Range.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)

Mid level temperatures wont change very much through Saturday
night as mid and upper level flow from the approaching trough
begins to swing to the south. This should ramp warm air advection
up quite a bit with 700 mb temperatures hanging around the 0.5-
1.5C range depending on how far north you go. This will throw a
wrench into forecast snow amounts as the reduction in ratio may
limit accumulation below 8,500 feet through late Saturday.
Temperatures should begin to fall Sunday as the main wave
approaches and strong upslope flow develops on the front range.
Dynamic cooling should lower the snow level to about 7,500 feet by
Sunday evening before the surge of artic air makes its way into
the area. Snow level should continue to drop overnight Sunday and
early Monday. The first significant accumulations of the season for
the mountains are expected in this time frame. Heaviest snow
should be between 8,000 and 12,000 feet with 6-10 inches and
locally higher amounts of up to a foot on the highest Peaks. See
the recently issued Special Weather Statement for more info on
specific areas. Accumulating snow as low as 6,000 feet will be
possible early Monday morning, but accumulation amounts are highly
dependent upon the switch to snow. Models remain split on Monday
with the GFS warmer than the EURO which keeps much of southeastern
Wyoming below freezing and allows for continued accumulations.
Regardless of which model solution is correct, precipitation
should continue through Monday evening before temporarily ending
Tuesday afternoon.

Another shot for rain and snow is expected early Wednesday
morning as the main trough stalls over the intermountain west.
Things will die down again Thursday morning before another round
of wet weather develops late Thursday through next weekend. The
remnants of hurricane Sergio may become a critical factor in
combination with an artic front. This combination could prove to
be quite interesting winter weather wise if models are correct.
This will be watched through next week.

MVFR to VFR conditions continue to persist across the region
through this afternoon. Expecting some -shra and vicinity showers
across majority of terminal sites later this afternoon into the
evening. Concern beyond the first six hours will be for the
overnight period with low ceilings getting down to IFR and
possibly LIFR from KLAR eastward into the NE Panhandle. Extended
concern Sunday into Monday with MVFR and IFR conditions coupled
with rain and snow.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Limited fire weather concerns across the region with ample
moisture in place and with cooler temperatures. Increased
moisture will aid in the Ryan Fire containment and spread.
Wetting rain chances will be high starting this evening and
continuing through the beginning of the week. Mountain
snows with valley rain will be likely through the next
several days. A brief break of precipitation looks to
occur Wednesday but another round of snow will be possible
late Thursday into Friday of next week.
