Widespread rain event still looks on track through Thursday. Much
needed rainfall and accumulated mountain snow are possible for
most of southeast Wyoming and Nebraska Panhandle.

Currently...Frontal boundary analyzed on surface from a low center
near North Platte across extreme northwest Kansas, then southwest
of Colorado Springs this morning. Upper low seen on water vapor
imagery near the 4 corners area. Up here in southeast WYoming and
Nebraska Panhandle, northeast upslope flow well established behind
the front. Getting reports on METARS at Chadron and Lusk of dense
fog with visibilities at 1/4 mile. Stratus all the way down to
Sidney this morning. May need a Dense Fog Advisory if the low
visibilities persist much longer.

For today, front to our south waves north into northeast Colorado
and the southern Nebraska Panhandle as a warm front. CWFA will be
in the favorable left front quadrant of a strong 250mb jet of
90-100kts to interact with this warm front this afternoon. GFS,
NAM and ECMWF all targeting the eastern Wyoming Plains and
Nebraska Panhandle for fairly widespread and possibly moderate
rainfall. General agreement on at least a half inch of rainfall
across this area seen on all guidance. GFS close to an inch of QPF
at 00Z this afternoon. Did increase PoPs for this afternoon across
much of the area.

For Wednesday, the 4 corners low tracks into eastern Colorado and
our western mountains see 700mb temperatures falling to -3 to -5C.
With snow levels around 8000 feet, do feel strongly that we are
going to see heavy snowfall for our mountains and am getting some
pretty impressive snow amounts over the Summit and Snowy Range.
Decided to issue winter storm watches for zones 114 and 116. For
the Sierra Madre Range, getting advisory level snow out there
which can be added once the day shift decides on what to do with
the watches this afternoon.

Upper low tracks into southwestern Nebraska Thursday morning for
widespread rainfall across the Panhandle and possibly a mix of
rain and snow here at Cheyenne Thursday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)
Issued at 206 AM MDT Tue May 1 2018

Thursday night...Will see some leftover isolated showers over the
mountains in the evening then clearing skies behind the departing
shortwave trough aloft.

Friday...Big time warming trend as the flow aloft turns northwest
with rising heights. Maximum temperatures in the 60s to mid 70s with
700 mb temperatures peaking near 4 Celsius.

Saturday...Mild temperatures continue as the ridge aloft moves even
closer. Other than a few late day showers over the mountains, it
looks dry with warm temperatures aloft limiting convective
development.

Sunday...Ridging aloft moves to western Nebraska with an influx of
low and mid level moisture over our counties on west southwest flow
aloft, helping isolated to scattered afternoon and evening showers
and thunderstorms to erupt. Slightly cooler with more cloud cover
and precipitation coverage.

Monday...Although temperatures will remain mild with 700 mb
temperatures near 8 Celsius, we expect isolated to scattered
afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms on moist southwest
flow aloft ahead of an approaching trough over the Great Basin
states.

In general, VFR prevails through this evening. Scattered showers &
thunderstorms may impact some terminals across southeast Wyo & the

the western Nebraska Panhandle after 09z, with IFR/LIFR conditions
possible.

Wet pattern will continue over the next several days with
widespread wetting rains and mountain snow. Upper level low
pressure over the 4 corners area will interact with a cold front
over northern Colorado and southern Wyoming to bring widespread
precipitation to the area. Many locations will see rainfall in
excess of an inch. Warmer temperatures after the low moves into
Kansas for Friday into the weekend should help to accelerate
greenup of fuels. So no fire weather concerns are expected.
