...An arctic cold front will spread snow across the region tonight
and Monday. In the front's wake, winds will become breezy and 
temperatures will plummet. In areas that just received snow, 
blowing snow will be an issue with a reduction to visibilities at
times. As for the temperatures, frigid wind chills will set in 
Monday into Tuesday, just in time for the New Year...

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday night)
Issued at 335 AM MST Sun Dec 30 2018

Relatively active weather over the next 48 hours as an arctic cold
front begins moving southward towards southeast Wyoming and
western Nebraska today. Arctic front is actually still in Canada
early this morning and will push south into the US over the next 6
hours. This front will then move into the I-25 and I-80 corridors
late this evening. With a few different hazards expected at
different times, will discuss each hazard/headline separately.

...STRONG WINDS Today...

High Wind Warnings remain in effect for portions of the I-80 and
I-25 corridor today and into this evening. Gusts between 60 and 70
mph have been observed up until midnight, with a brief lull in the
strong winds observed at this time. Expect the winds to strengthen
once again by sunrise from Elk Mountain eastward to near Cheyenne,
and from Wheatland to the Colorado border along I-25. Cancelled
the High Wind Watch for the rest of Laramie county and eastern
Platte county today due to limited subsidence, 700mb winds below
50 knots, and increasing cloud cover which will likely limit
mixing. However, mountain wave activity is possible in these areas
although gusts over 50 knots appear unlikely at this time. Models
show high pressure moving into the high plains this evening, which
will shut down the strong winds over the wine prone areas before
midnight tonight.

...ACCUMULATING SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW Tonight and Monday...

Snowfall will gradually develop northwest to southeast behind the
arctic front as the upper level trough digs south and stalls
across Utah/Colorado/Wyoming area. Models show split flow as the
southern portion of the trough becomes the more dominant feature
by Monday across Colorado and New Mexico. Before the system
splits, models show decent convergence and frontogenesis with the
northern disturbance across east central and northeast Wyoming.
With good model agreement, issued a Winter Weather Advisory from
northern Carbon county eastward into Converse and Niobrara
counties towards the Nebraska border. All models show a quick 2 to
5 inches of snow in this area with higher amounts in the
mountains. In addition, very windy conditions are expected behind
the front across the plains as the arctic high drifts southward. With
gusts up to 45 mph possible, added blowing snow to the forecast in
these areas. Kept areas further south out of the advisory due to
the expected split flow. However, if these split happens sooner
and further north, may need to include portions of the I-80
corridor in the Advisory as well. Otherwise, around one to two
inches of snow accumulation possible further south outside of the
mountains.

...FRIGID TEMPS AND DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS Monday Afternoon and
Monday Night...

All models show 700mb temperatures lowering below -20c to -22c
along with 850 temps between -10c to -18c and lower on Monday
behind the arctic front. This will likely be the coldest airmass
so far this season and it will settle into the area through
Tuesday. Temperatures on Monday will likely not budge from the
early morning lows; in fact, the highs for the day will likely
occur just after midnight early Monday morning. Afternoon
temperatures on Monday will be in the single digits across the
whole area. With winds still gusting up to 40 mph, this will
result in wind chill readings between -15 to -25 in the afternoon.
There is a good chance for wind chills to drop below -25 Monday
night which will likely impact New Years celebrations. Thankfully,
winds will become light and variable or calm Monday night although
the air temperatures will be bitter cold as is. Will brief day
shift on potential Wind Chill headlines once the strong winds
subside later today.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

The long term forecast remains mostly unchanged from the last
round of forecasts. The upper air pattern starts with
northwesterly flow anchored over the area with a strong ridge of
high pressure to the west. At the surface a freakishly strong
arctic high pressure system will be crashing the party with very
cold temperatures. Lows Tuesday and wednesday could again
approach the zero line with single digits likely for much of
southeastern Wyoming.

The high will begin to shift west on Wednesday as an approaching
shortwave trough develops over the Dakotas. A surface low will
develop and slide east across the northern plains Wednesday
afternoon. This will drive a fairly stout synoptic gradient from
west to east. Strong west winds are likely Wednesday and
Thursday. With the stronger winds we will see downslope warming
and a rapid change in temperature from Tuesday. Highs in the 30s
and upper 40s pushing to near 50 by weeks end.

Beyond this time, models differ substantially on the upper level
flow pattern and the associated surface features. There is some
hint at the return of southwest flow aloft and the passage of
several storm systems, but differences remain too much for an
accurate idea of the extended.

VFR conditions mostly prevail across southeast Wyoming and
Nebraska TAF sites with patchy MVFR ceilings near KRWL. Windy and
locally turbulent conditions ongoing in first 2000ft of surface
for WY sites now through 00Z tonight. Ceilings and visibilities
will reduce late this evening and overnight as a cold front and
scattered to numerous snow showers overspread the region. MVFR to
IFR and locally LIFR ceilings will be likely after 06Z from west
to east across the region. Snow showers will reduce visibility,
sporadic at first, and them more widespread across east WY and
west NE after 06Z through mid-day Monday.

Winds will be gusty at 30 to 40 knots from the west this
afternoon for WY sites and 20-25 KT for NE sites. Wind will reduce
overnight but increase early Monday morning from the north with
cold front passage back upwards of 30 to 40 KT.

Strong winds are expected to continue mainly over the wind prone
areas of southeast Wyoming. A High Wind Warning remains in effect
for portions of Interstate 80 and Interstate 25. Winds should
subside by this evening.

An arctic cold front will move south across the area tonight.
Accumulating snowfall is expected tonight, which will result in
some travel impacts. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for
central and east central Wyoming tonight, including Douglas and
Lusk. The combination of falling snow and areas of blowing snow
may result in greatly reduced visibility along with drifting snow
on area roadways.

Frigid temperatures will return to the area Sunday night through
