Today...A warmer day expected as the flow aloft backs slightly to
northwest with rising heights and thicknesses. Maximum temperatures
mainly in the 40s with 700 mb temperatures near -4 Celsius.
Tonight...Flow aloft backs and strengthens even further with 850/700
mb height gradients strengthening quickly over 70 meters at 850 mb
and over 60 meters at 700 mb from Craig to Casper, thus
necessitating the issuance of a high wind watch for our wind prone
locations after midnight. Decent low level mixing, or winds, will
produce a relatively mild night for this time of year.
Tuesday...West northwest flow aloft strengthens even more with the
NAM progging a 60 to 80 meters 700 mb jetlet overhead in the
afternoon over southeast Wyoming. Craig to Casper 850/700 mb height
gradients exceed 70 meters, thus we will expand the high wind watch
to include lower elevations like Douglas, Wheatland, Laramie and
Rawlins. Enough middle and high clouds may limit the winds somewhat
at Cheyenne, so we have left them out of the watch for now. In any
event, relatively mild temperatures will prevail with strong
downslope winds and 700 mb temperatures near 1 Celsius.
Tuesday night...Although winds aloft will remain strong, the passage
of a cold front will help to decrease winds somewhat. A chance of
snow will develop over our northern counties associated with the
baroclinic band over Converse and Niobrara Counties.
Wednesday...Will be a breezy to windy day with chilly high
temperatures only in the 30s to near 40 degrees with 700 mb
temperatures near -10 Celsius. Scattered snow showers expected with
adequate low and mid level moisture and cyclonic flow aloft, along
with localized upslope and the jet aloft overhead.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday Night - Sunday)

The upper-level pattern through much of the extended period should
be dominated by persistent strong NW flow aloft across the central
and northern Rockies. Weak pressure falls over central Montana and
eastern Wyoming could support H7 CAG-CPR gradients in excess of 50
meters on a daily basis, so would expect frequent gusty winds over
the southeast Wyoming wind corridors. It is difficult to pin-point
opportunities for High Wind headlines, but a few 50 knot gusts are
possible from time to time for ARL/BRX/VDW. Snow potential will be
on the rise on Sat/Sun as an arctic cold front blasts south across
the CWA. Main question marks right now are w/ regard to the timing
and depth of the front. This will influence the residence time for
any moderate/heavy snow, and resulting impacts. Overall confidence
for widespread precipitation is fairly high, however.
