.SYNOPSIS...
A significant storm system will move out of the southern states
today. This storm will bring a variety of wintry precipitation
to the Commonwealth for Thursday into early Friday. Widespread
moderate to heavy snow and sleet is possible. Blustery and
much below normal temperatures will continue into early next
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 PM THIS EVENING/...
Only weak streamers and a few flurries are left over the north.

For the afternoon hours, high pressure will be drifting across
Lake Erie and will lead to winds veering to the north then
northeast and becoming light for late today and the first half
of tonight.

Highs will near the freezing mark across the Laurels, but likely
won't climb out of the upper 20s in the north. Highs across the
remainder of Central and Southern PA. Max temps will be near 40F
in the larger metro areas of the SE.

.SHORT TERM /7 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY/...
With some new info from 12Z NAM and HREFs, we have tweaked
timing of the onset to try to make it a little finer. Otherwise,
the amounts and p-type have been kept as close as possible to
the prev fcst grids. The take away from this update will be a
bigger emphasis on sleet. Sleet can really mess up the roads, as
it is tough to scrape and can be packed down instantly to a
sheet of ice. The timing of p-type changes is still uncertain,
so no changes there to the mixed-bag wording we have going. My
certainty is very high that we will get multiple p-types all
Thurs day and night.

Prev...
Clouds will increase tonight ahead of a strong closed low
ejecting northeast from the lower MS toward the TN Valley. Dome
of high pressure will be retreating slowly but maintain a cold
wedge down the east side of the Appalachians. Strong forcing
combined with ample warm air/moisture advection ahead of the
amplifying/negative tilt system will spread heavy precipitation
from south to north across central PA Thursday morning. The
biggest forecast challenge is determining p-types which will
directly affect resulting snow and ice accumulations.

Warm advection pcpn surging into central PA from the south
Thursday morning will encounter a pretty dry low level airmass
with dewpoints in the teens/20s and 5-10 degree T-Td spreads.
This will result in evaporational top-down column cooling with
significant wet bulb effects playing a big role with ptypes. The
The dynamic cooling along with NBM MaxTw aloft favor more
snow/sleet ptypes early on in the event especially over the
interior north-central mtns. Sleet/freezing rain is more likely
on the southern "fringes" of the CWA into Thursday afternoon and
evening as warm air tries to overrun the cold wedge. Low
pressure developing along the NC coast should help "lock-in" the
cold air over the north-central elevations and keep the colder
snow/sleet profiles in tact. The most likely zone for
significant icing appears to be from the Laurel Highlands
eastward along a corridor from the PA Turnpike and along/east of
I-81 Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. Models develop a
deformation band of wrap-around snow Thursday night which is
fcst to pivot over north-central PA.

Uncertainty in the ptypes and potential for a dry slot to
cut off pcpn continues to weigh on forecaster confidence.
That said, a lean toward more snow/sleet (less ice especially
in north-central PA) resulted in a slight increase in snow
amounts which were derived from an equal-weighted WPC/NBM model
blend. The percent chance of 6" of snow or more in the watch
area is on the low-end (45-60%) with 3-6" most the most likely
outcome at this point. Locally higher amounts are possible in
the interior northern tier. Mixed ptypes (sleet/zr) have the
best chance of undercutting snow amounts across the south-
central Alleghenies or southern portion of the watch area where
SLRs will be rather low. Advisories look like a sure bet on the
next shift for counties outside of the winter storm watch.

Onset of mixed precip btwn 5-10AM across the south and around
midday in the north still look on track. Expect AM commute
impacts and travel delays. The heaviest pcpn is probably in 2
parts: the initial shot of WAA pcpn during the day Thursday and
then later Thursday night into early Friday with the deformation
zone. So there could be somewhat of a lull Thursday evening into
early Thursday night. The system will be pulling out Friday
morning with precipitation ending from west to east.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Broad upper level long-wave trough will continue over the east
with some fast moving disturbances keeping chances for snow
showers across the north along with lake enhancement into early
next week.

.AVIATION /16Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Only minor wind direction changes as we should start to veer and
lighten a little as high pressure moves closer through the day
and into the evening.

Prev...
An area of lake effect clouds and orographic scattered snow
showers will bring periods of sub-VFR conditions to BFD into the
overnight before tapering off. Otherwise, VFR conditions will
dominate the region through Wed night.

W/NW wind at 10-15 mph will persist through the day Wed, with
some gustiness in the higher elevations.

Weather deteriorates on Thursday as a winter storm brings a
variety of precipitation types to the region with widespread
restrictions from low clouds/weather into the weekend. Mixed
precip moves in just after 12Z on Thurs to JST and AOO, and
spreads fairly steadily NE into the rest of the terminals by
18Z. Cigs and vsby will drop to IFR and LIFR rather quickly.

.Outlook...

Thu-Thur PM...IFR/LIFR in snow and mixed precipitation. May
turn to RA over MDT/LNS Thurs PM. De-icing will be a must.

Fri...Snow/sleet ending west to east early, then SCT SHSN and
MVFR/IFR cigs aftn/night over the west.

Sat-Sun...Mainly VFR. MVFR with snow showers NW.
