.SYNOPSIS...
A winter storm system will bring accumulating snow to much of
central Pennsylvania Tuesday night into Wednesday. The heaviest
snowfall and area of greatest impact is expected to be focused
over east-central Pennsylvania. Periods of snow are likely to
continue over the northwest Alleghenies and Laurel Highlands
with additional snow accumulation through the end of the week.
Temperatures will stay below average into the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Increasing clouds today with spotty/light precip increasing in
coverage later this afternoon into early tonight. Expect
rain/snow mix in the valleys and wet snow at higher elevations,
eventually trending toward greater coverage of wet snow
overnight with nightfall helping to produce a slushy coating to
an inch or so by Wednesday morning.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Computer models show rapid coastal surface low development over
the eastern Carolinas late Tue. night moving up the northern Mid
Atlantic coast (just east of the Delmarva/NJ coast) Wednesday.
The potent winter storm will develop into a Nor'easter with the
potential to bring heavy snow to parts of east-central PA during
the daylight hours Wednesday. Tight gradients in the QPF lead
to continued uncertainty on the western edge of the precip
shield. Due to tight gradient and the forecast snow accumulation
window falling just outside of the 06/00Z HREF solution envelope,
opted to ride the watch for one more cycle and allow the
dayshift to issue advisory and/or warning headlines. The track
of the surface low will be of great importance regarding snow
impacts and tight gradients in the snowfall amounts. Slight
west/east shifts in the track could make a big difference across
east-central PA. Highest confidence and multi-model ensemble
probabilities for significant snow is along/east of the I-81 and
US-15 corridor. A period of intense snowfall rates is possible
Wednesday with 1-2 in/hr rates in the deformation zone snow
bands. Snow intensity should be trending down by Wednesday
night as gusty, downslope/westerly flow eventually takes
control of the large scale synoptic pattern.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Upper low rotates through the area Thu-Fri combining with
seasonably cold westerly flow to prolong snow showers downwind
of the lakes and over the favored upslope areas along the
Allegheny Plateau. This will support additional snow
accumulation through the end of the week across the higher
elevations in the Laurel Highlands and northwest Alleghenies.

Storm potential still very much up in the air heading into early
next week with very low confidence given a large spread in the
guidance. Greater confidence exists in a continuation of below
average/seasonably cool temperatures for early to mid March.

.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
To start, an area of MVFR stratocu continues to shrink over
parts of the northern mountains, and will recede into NY state
around 13z. The first half of the day today will bring
widespread VFR conditions as light winds swing around to the SE
and increase to around 10 mph.

Then focus turns to an approaching winter storm system that will
bring widespread restrictions (and winter weather) to the
region. A weakening occluded front will push in from the west
this afternoon, with ceiling restrictions developing from west
to east through the afternoon and mid evening. Timed the
restrictions to begin at JST/BFD around 18z, 21-23z at AOO/UNV,
and 00Z at IPT/MDT/LNS. Light rain and snow showers will
accompany the front.

Main player then becomes a rapidly developing coastal low that
will reinforce low ceilings and bring accumulating snow to much
of central Pennsylvania tonight into Wednesday. The heaviest
snowfall and area of greatest impact is expected to be focused
over eastern Pennsylvania east of the Susquehanna River.

Restrictions and periods of snow are likely to continue over
the northwest Alleghenies and Laurel Highlands with additional
snow accumulation through the end of the week.

Outlook...

Wed...Widespread restrictions. Periods of snow - heaviest in
the east. Becoming breezy.

Thu-Fri...Mainly VFR, but restrictions in SHSN Northern and
Western Mountains. Continued breezy.

Sat...Mainly VFR.
