Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service State College PA 257 PM EST Thu Jan 11 2018 .SYNOPSIS... A frontal system will approach by Friday and move through the region early Saturday. A moderate to heavy rain will be followed by a strong cold front. A mix of sleet and freezing rain will begin Friday night and turn to heavy snow in the northwestern mountains. Very cold air will return to the area for the weekend lasting into at least the beginning of next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... Spotty light rain is possible - mainly in the NW - today, but the sfc high is still strong enough over the state to keep moisture rolling around us for most of the day. Gradually, the moisture will build up as the dewpoints surge into the m-u40s through the day. The SE wind is an upslope into most of the mountain ridges in PA. This will aid in creating clouds. The multiple layers of clouds will eventually fill the sky today. Maxes will be balmy - ranging from the u40s to the u50s, with some of the warmest readings on the hills of the west. We are wondering about the 58F at KBFD. That is much warmer than any other nearby stations nor the meso/backyard obs nearby. We will check that out. && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY/... The short term contains a little of everything for everyone. Fri...Rain/low cigs possible. Evening mixed precip possible NW Mtns.A significant warm up continues tonight with temperatures and dewpoints continuing to rise overnight. By Friday morning, temps will be solidly in the 50s. Have mentioned fog for everywhere. Dense fog would be much more of a worry if we had a decent amount of snow on the ground, but much has melted already, except in the Alleghenies. Rain will be spotty at first as the front remains well to our west and clouds keep upright convection from becoming likely. But, the rain will become heavy at times in the NW overnight. By morning, it could amount to more than an inch in the north helped along by a LLJet of 55-65kts. Another half of an inch or so could be tacked on through the day on Friday, but the precip will be pretty spotty in the middle of the day. See hydro section for more on the potentially excessive rain. The trouble then becomes a wintry scenario. The rain will start to transition to a wintry mix Friday evening in the NW as another arctic blast moves down from eastern Canada. The leading edge of the cold air will be into the NW mtns in the afternoon, and by sunset frozen precip is going to be falling in Warren Co. The cold air comes in so fast and undercuts the huge warm nose/layer in the lowest 10kft that a period of freezing rain may start to occur in the NW, and spread to the SE. As the cold air gets thicker at the sfc, it will turn things to sleet and then snow. However, the details of the transition and precip amounts during and after are still murky. Therefore, we will continue the winter storm watch for the NW, and expanded it to Potter/Cameron and Elk Cos in collaboration with neighboring offices. One worry is that a significant amount of sleet could significantly hamper travel despite not meeting the letter of the law when it comes to warning-level snow accumulation criteria. HPC guidance and most model solutions yield advisory ice accretions across much of the area before sunrise Saturday. However, I still have trouble resolving the precip turn from plain rain to mainly freezing rain even with an air temp drop as drastic as we see coming. The surfaces/roads will be warm and moist at first. The cold air may get deep enough to make sleet before much ZR can occur. But, the rapid temp drop could just freeze up the moisture on the surfaces even without freezing rain falling. The cold air becomes thick enough to make snow just as a secondary low deepens just to our south as the front pushes to the east of the area. Deep moisture will still be thrown back into the entire area Friday night. Snow totals under a quality deformation zone could eventually reach 5-8 inches in the NW. The precip may cut off before a changeover occurs in the far SE. Have kept the temps >32F through sunrise Sat there. But, a threat for ZR still exists there as some model guidance does drop them below fzg by then. Snow will taper off through the day on Sat. So, the end time of the watch looks okay. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Winter conditions for much of the extended. Cold and windy Sunday with temperatures below average everywhere. Cold for the first half of the work week. Will keep low pops for light snow across the western half of area. Next weather system later on Wednesday with a period of snow possible for much of the region. Some snow accumuations are possible with this. && .AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Deteriorating conditions tonight, as deep moisture overspreads the state, resulting in widespread IFR/LIFR cigs and rain. The one area that may escape the IFR cigs will be KJST, where a southerly flow is climatologically unfavorable for IFR cigs due to downsloping off of higher upstream terrain. Unsettled on Friday with periods of rain and gusty winds. Strong cold front will bring much colder weather Friday night with rain changing to snow for much of the area. Low cigs and reduced vsby likely through Saturday morning. Improving weather for the weekend, though winds will continue gusty. Outlook... Sat...AM rain/low cigs poss east. A brief January thaw with very mild temperatures is expected through Friday. Temperatures will be around 50 degrees on Friday morning. Little if any snow is left on the ground, but what is left will melt off through the next 24-30 hours. Streamflows are rather low, but the waterways are choked with ice. Rainfall through Friday evening could reach an inch in the south and an inch and a half to two inches across the northern half of the CWA. A higher than average risk for poor drainage and ice jam flooding exists, especially in the north where the most snow is left to melt and the rainfall is expected to be the heaviest. Ice jam flooding is possible, and perhaps likely, as the rising water breaks up the ice and leads to clogs at constrictions.
