.SYNOPSIS...
An occluded front trailing off the remnant low of Gordon is
inching eastward through Central PA this morning. The front will
drag it's feet and stall just to the southeast of the state
tonight. High pressure nosing in from the northwest will not be
able to completely clear out the clouds and showers from all of
Central PA.

There is the potential for the region to be impacted by
Hurricane Florence by the end of the week or next weekend,
though the biggest impacts look to remain south of the state.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Train of light to moderate showers seems to have an end over the
Laurels right now, but redevelopment seems to occur every time
it appears we will lose the showers. Will keep the forecast a
little pessimisstic and hold showers in the forecast through
sunrise for many places. There is even a little instability just
to the SE of the CWA. Have opted to keep T out of the forecast
for the CWA until later in the day when NAM and GFS LI's go
negative to the east of the main stem Susq. NAM even cranks up
some convective precip over the far ern counties and slides it
NE. The clouds are pretty stubborn. Have made only slow
improvements and allowed for some breaks over the NC & NWrn
counties today. Those breaks could lead to an isold SHRA in the
N, though. Temps will be cool again today, but not as chilly as
the past few days. Will be revisiting maxes again, but have
taken a deg or two off them for now. That puts them 3-5F below
normal.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
We keep promising that high pressure will build in and make it
all nice. I think it's time to stop making promises. The front
going through the region today will hang up very close to our
SErn border. The SE flow off the Atlantic only relaxes for a
short time, but keeps on going, and perhaps gets stronger mid-
week. Thus, the close proximimty of the front and rising air
over our heads will make it unsettled like we had before this
Gordon deluge. Expect occasional showers roaming SW-NE. In our
recent spate, we had very little success trying to time these
showers by placing higher POPs in the afternoons than other
times of day. NAM and GFS both bubble showers up into the area
from the south later tonight, and make almost categorical POPs
for the 12-hr period covering Wed daylight over the SE half of
the CWA. The best chance of staying dry Wed will be NW of a line
from Clearfield to Mansfield.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Sprawling high pressure off to our north promises to create a
persistent easterly maritime flow of moist air for mid week
onward.

The strength of the upper ridge will be all important in how
far north and west Florence will go. With the wet summer we
have had, any additional heavy rains coming out of the tropics
would be a challenge for all involved.

Latest guidance has Florence going ashore near Wilmington NC
Thursday evening before slowing down as it moves inland. It
remains to be seen how much of a direct influence this will have
locally, or if some sort of frontal interaction with the
tropical moisture can develop north of the storm. All eyes will
certainly be on this potentially very dangerous hurricane.

Temperatures will begin to rebound by the Tuesday through
Thursday timeframe. As mentioned above, with the influence of
Florence so uncertain, the forecast for the end of the period is
a rather bland mention for small chances of showers.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Not a lot of change for the 06Z TAF package.

Compared to recent nights, visibility is down across
the region.

A small band of rain is right across the office here.

Anyway, looking at mainly IFR conditions this morning.

Earlier discussion below.

A slow moving frontal boundary, combined with a moist easterly
flow off of the Atlantic Ocean, will result in widespread low
cigs, occasional drizzle and scattered showers tonight.
Observations at 03Z are showing cig heights mostly between
500-1000ft and model soundings support the idea of lowering
stratus overnight, with predominantly ifr/lifr conditions
overnight.

Improving flying conditions are anticipated Tuesday, as high
pressure builds in from the Grt Lks. SREF/HREF prob charts
indicate improvement will come first across the central portion
of the state (KAOO/KUNV/KIPT), where cigs should improve to
mvfr or low vfr by late morning. Improvement could take longer
along the spine of the Appalachians (KBFD/KJST) and near the
exiting front over southeast Pa (KMDT/KLNS). However, even there
improvement appears likely by afternoon. Can't rule out an
afternoon thunderstorm at KLNS in vicinity of stalled cold
front.

.HYDROLOGY...
The heaviest of the rain is over from Gordon, and we can relax a
little as there will be no heavy rain over the CWA today. The
spotty showers today should not allow for renewed rises. There
is a tiny chc of some TS in the far Ern fringe of the CWA.
However, it is tiny, and thankfully, they have not been hit the
hardest. Many small streams and creeks are still experiencing
at least minor flooding, with many of the larger rivers in
various stages of flooding. Some of the faster-reacting points
are falling, and some falling below flood stage. However, the
West Branch Susq R is still going to be rising significantly
today and Wed. The Juniata basin is easily the hardest hit area
right now, with moderate to major flooding on-going. Beech Creek
(West Branch basin) is still rising and well into Major flood
category. Much of that water did an end-around the Sayers Dam,
falling in the Marsh Creek and Beech Creek basins. Many of
those points are near crest and should be falling soon.
