.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level low over the eastern Great Lakes will shift south
today, then slowly shift to the east coast on Wednesday. An
upper level disturbance will quickly move southeast from the
western Great Lakes this morning into the Ohio valley by
tonight. An upper level trough will slide southeast across the
area on Thursday night through Friday followed by high pressure
expanding south out of Canada over the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Numerous bands of snow continue to move southeast across the
area. Snow is heavy within these bands with visibilities
dropping to a quarter mile. Accumulations will vary considerably
today, ranging from little to no snow to a quick two inches if
someone remains under the band for a longer period of time. NW
to SE oriented bands, like the one located just south of the
turnpike, will bring the highest accumulations as they are set
up parallel to the winds, moving over the same area for a longer
period of time. Snow will tend to melt after the bands move
through with temperatures near the freezing mark and a few peaks
of March sun coming through. Will raise accumulations a little
more in the forecast for areas that will continue to see snow
this afternoon.

Original discussion...
Active short term period as an upper low sinks south across the
eastern Great Lakes, shifting east into New England by
Wednesday evening. This will bring broad northwest flow across
the region through the period, with continued CAA. A potent vort
max currently noted on w/v imagery across Wisconsin will
quickly swing southeast through the area later this morning into
this afternoon and into the Ohio valley by tonight. Strong
cooling aloft associated with this wave will bring very steep
lapse rates across the region through the day, with rather
convective snow showers developing across the area with the
passage of the wave. Concerned about snow squall potential late
this morning and especially this afternoon, with a drier sub
cloud layer and decent low/mid level flow. Hi-res guidance shows
fairly widespread convective snow shower by this afternoon, so
will go with likely pops for most of the area. With surface
temperatures expected in the low to upper 30s across the area,
and the brief but potent showers, not expecting any significant
accumulations, however where the showers/squalls persist, and
inch or two on mainly grassy surfaces cannot be ruled out.
Expect rapid visibility reductions to one quarter mile or less
at times with the snow showers. Guidance varies greatly with
respect to high temps today, but tried to stay closer to a
consensus of MOS guidance, with generally 33-37 degrees for
highs across most of northern Ohio and 29-32 degrees across NW
PA and far NE OH.

The wave will sink  south of the area tonight with widespread
snow showers diminishing. Lake effect will begin to ramp up
across the snow belt tonight into Wednesday morning. While lake
effect parameters are not all that impressive, with marginal
lake induced instability, shallow inversion heights and lower
sub cloud RH values, orographic forcing with fairly strong
northwest flow, and potential upstream lake connections is
expected to bring a period of moderate snowfall to the higher
elevations of northwest PA. There is a fairly good window from
about 06Z through 18Z Wednesday where persistent upslope will
bring accumulating snowfall to areas from Conneautville
northeast to Edinboro, Waterford and Wattsburg. Staying fairly
conservative relative to hi res model QPF and model snow ratios,
currently forecast 24 hour snowfall amounts of 4 to 7 inches
with locally higher amounts. Will hoist a Winter Weather
Advisory for southern Erie and Crawford for a 24 hour period.
Lesser amounts are expected across the snow belt in northeast
Ohio during this period, with generally 1 to 3 inches possible,
perhaps an inch or so more in the higher elevations of eastern
Cuyahoga and Geauga counties. Lake effect snow will diminish
from west to east Wednesday afternoon as the flow backs with
ridging quickly building across the area. Lows tonight are
expected to be in the upper teens to mid 20s, with highs on
Wednesday ranging from the upper 20s across northwest PA to the
mid to upper 30s across northwest Ohio.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Winds will back Wednesday night ahead of yet another
reinforcing cold front. Weak warm advection and the south to
southwest flow will result in a somewhat milder night with lows
generally 25 to 30. Some snow showers/flurries could linger but
likely limited to northwest PA by that time.

The timing of the cold  front appears to be early in the day
Thursday and cold advection is progged to increase during the
day Thursday. Subsidence and drying will increase but it will be
cold aloft and stratocumulus will develop. Scattered
flurries/snow showers will probably develop, mainly in the
snowbelt. 850 mb temperatures are progged to drop to -15C by
Friday morning, more like mid winter. Heavy snow would seem
unlikely given the dryness of the air mass although the model
soundings suggest that there could be some decent instability
and good snow growth potential. At this point, there is plenty
of time to try and refine the forecast.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure will build in by Saturday. The models continue to
track a strong short wave to our south. We may see some high
clouds but Saint Patrick's Day would appear to be dry.
Temperatures will likely not be far from normal except near Lake
Erie where a wind off the lake will probably hold temps in the
30s.

High pressure should hold on through Sunday, then not a lot of
confidence in the forecast early next week. A split flow
develops with short waves sliding across the Great Lakes as well
as the Tennessee Valley. The ECMWF reinforces the cold air on
Monday while the GFS is not as aggressive with the cooling. The
ECMWF has a tendency to be too cold with back door fronts. Will
split the difference for now which lines up closer to the CMC.
Will include a small chance of rain/snow showers (and ignore
the threat of freezing rain) by Monday night as another wave
passes to the south.

.AVIATION /18Z Tuesday THROUGH Sunday/...
Variable conditions with bursts of snow will continue today.
Outside of snow showers, conditions are VFR. The heavier snow
showers are reducing visibilities to a half mile or less for
brief periods of time. Have tried to time IFR snow showers into
MFD/CAK through 21Z. After that time another trough is expected
to move south across Lake Erie, bringing the next good burst of
snow to terminals between 21-04Z, especially at CLE and other NE
Ohio sites. Amendments will continue to be needed based on
placement and strength of snow showers. West to northwest winds
gusting to 20-25 knots remain possible this afternoon, especially
across NW Ohio and near the lakeshore.

Behind the trough this evening, steadier snow will increase
across NW PA and impact ERI at times. Brought snow into ERI
around 10Z and expect it to continue into Wednesday.

.Outlook...Periods of non-VFR through Wednesday in snow
showers, especially northeast OH and northwest PA. Non-VFR may
linger into Thursday as ERI.

.MARINE...
Northwest winds will increase on Lake Erie today, especially
later in the day, as the pressure gradient increases between
deep low pressure off the east coast and high pressure over the
plains states. Winds could approach 30 knots on the east half of
the lake by Wednesday. There may be some decrease in the wind
Wednesday night, especially on western lake Erie, but it will
take until the weekend for high pressure to finally build in
from the west and for winds to lighten up. Small craft
advisories may be needed much of the week especially east of
Cleveland.

less. Roads may quickly become snow covered. Motorists should slow
down and use caution as they encounter heavy snow showers this
morning. Interstates that will be impacted include I-80 and I-76

Several bands of heavy snow will move across North Central Ohio
through 1 PM. At 1122 AM EDT, the heaviest band of snow was located
along a line extending from near Chippewa Lake to near Fremont.
Movement was southeast at 15 mph. Visibilities will drop off
abruptly within bands of snow, quickly falling to a half mile or
less. Roads may quickly become snow covered. Motorists should slow
