Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move northeast of Lake Erie this evening pulling a
cold front across the area behind it. The low will merge with a
system tracking up the East Coast over New England. A trough of low
pressure will extend west from the low, that will swing south across
the area Tuesday night into Wednesday bringing an increase in lake
effect snow.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Canceled the remaining portions of the wind advisory as
strongest winds have moved east of the area. Gusts to 35 mph
still possible today in the lakeshore areas of NE OH/NW PA.

Previous Discussion...
Low pressure located over the east end of the Lake Erie will
pull away to the northeast overnight, wrapping colder air in
behind it. Most of the snow has tapered off across the west. The
better moisture begins to exit north-central Ohio around
midnight and continues until close to the OH/PA border.
Therefore the snow will taper off towards morning in Ohio but
is expected to continue in Pennsylvania. This will result in
higher accumulations inland where the Winter Storm Warnings have
been issued. In Ohio, a significant break in accumulating
snowfall is expected on Tuesday so will only carry the Advisory
through 10 AM then handle the mid-week system separately with
the Watch continuing Tuesday night through Wednesday night.
Accumulations with this first round are expected to be lower
along the lakeshore which is part of the reason for keeping the
Erie lakeshore in an Advisory for now. They may eventually need
to be upgraded if and when it looks like heavier snow will
effect that area. A wind Advisory remains in effect along the
east lakeshore although marginal.

Remaining previous discussion...The upper level closed low
will pivot into New England on Tuesday, then rotate westward
Tuesday night. This will pull the trough south across the area
Tuesday night and Wednesday causing a second round of heavy lake
enhanced snow. The headlines in Pennsylvania continue through
the duration of the event, with snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet
likely. Headline decisions will need to be made for the watch in
Ohio with additional snowfall expected. The westward extent of
the deeper moisture is something we will have to watch to see
how much of the snowbelt will see the higher accumulations mid-
week. The one limiting factor during the event is the airmass is
not overly cold and much of the lift is focused below the
dendritic growth zone. This should not be a problem when the
deeper moisture is around but could lead to reduced snowfall
totals if we do not end up with a good quality snow at times.
Temperatures remain well below normal with highs near 30 degrees
on Tuesday and Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
The short term begins Wednesday with ongoing lake effect snow
over northeast Ohio and northwest PA. due to persistent
northwest flow around low pressure in New England. Temps at
850mb expected to be -8 to -9C yielding only conditional
instability but with deep moisture in place and a moist
dendritic growth zone for seeding, would expect decent snow at
least through the morning. During the afternoon snow should
continue but drier air does begin to move in and we loose good
seeding. Have as much as 3 inches in the morning snow accum grid
over the higher terrain of nwrn PA and then drop back to around
1.5-2 for the afternoon. Have lesser amounts elsewhere in the
snowbelt. Wednesday night into Thursday drier air continues to
infiltrate the area as high pressure moves through the lower OH
Valley. Will begin with categorical pops but light accums
Wednesday night and then drop back to chance overnight.
Anticipate it might turn out drier on later models. Thursday
models show moisture increasing from the west with isentropic
lift on the back side of the high as it moves east. Models do
print to a small amount of precip in the west during the
afternoon so for now put in a small chance. Will have another
chance for rain mixed precip Thursday night into Friday with
added moisture in advance of an approaching warm front. Highs
Wednesday around 30, mid 30s Thursday and near 40 Friday.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The long term begins Friday night with the GFS and ECMWF
showing a surface low over KS/MO region with a warm front east
through the lower Ohio Valley. The low will move northeast and
move across western Ohio and Lake Erie Saturday
afternoon/evening. We could get precip into the west/southwest
towards morning Saturday but believe te bulk of the precip will
begin Saturday as the system moves through. Went with likely to
categorical Saturday and likely Saturday night. Models are a bit
different Sunday but despite differences, both have the area
fairly dry so have dropped pops back to chance/slight chance
through the afternoon. Sunday night into Monday differences
increase so not worth getting too specific. Will therefore have
chance and slight chance pops and mostly cloudy skies. Saturday
and Sunday highs should reach 45 to 50. Highs closer to 40 on
Monday.

.AVIATION /06Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/...
Low pressure over western New York is continuing off to the
northeast this morning. The synoptic rain and snow that moved
through most of the terminals this evening has changed over to
snow across the entire area and will continue east with the low
this morning. Snow impacts are limited to mainly KCLE to KCAK
and east with the lake enhanced snow showers being the most
problematic at KERI, where LIFR conditions in moderate snow are
possible this morning. Outside of the snow, a mixed bag of MVFR
and IFR will continue through the overnight and into the day on
Tuesday with the IFR mostly likely in the lee of Lake Erie and
MVFR elsewhere. There will be a break in the snow action later
this afternoon so I think that it will be likely that everyone
will pop back up to MVFR or higher. Eventually, the lake effect
machine will get restarted for the snow belt region but outside
of some vicinity snow mention, only truly confident in impacts
at KERI at this time. Winds will continue to be blustery out of
the west with gusts to 30 knots possible at times, especially
early this morning.

OUTLOOK...NE OH/NW PA will see non-VFR through at least Wednesday
night in lake effect snow showers.

.MARINE...
Altered the ending time of the western portion of the Gale
Warning. Really only some gusts of gale force have materialized.
So west end expires at 4 am. Winds stay borderline gales into
Tuesday morning so left the east half alone. Previous
discussion...Low pressure just north of Lake Erie will continue
northeast overnight. A cold front extending south from the low
across the lake will continue east across the remainder of the
lake this evening. Winds will turn northwest behind the front
and increase to 35 knot gales. Water levels on the west end have
been dropping through the day but remain 10 inches above the
critical mark this afternoon. Levels should remain above the
critical mark this evening but will need to continue to watch
tonight through Tuesday as winds turn more westerly. Tuesday,
the low will still over New England and maintain a tight
gradient across the lake. Winds should drop back from sustained
gales but will continue close to 30 knots. Wednesday, high
pressure will move east across the lower Ohio Valley. A
northwest flow however will remain on the lake at 15 to 25
knots. The next significant system to affect the lake will come
Saturday into Sunday but at this time winds are expected to
remain below gales.
