...Mid Morning Forecast Update...

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build slowly east into the Ohio Valley today and
then to the Mid-Atlantic coast by Friday. A strong cold front will
move southeast across the local area Friday night. A trough of low
pressure will move southeast following the cold front Saturday
afternoon. High pressure will build east across mid Mississippi
Valley into the Ohio Valley by Sunday night. The high will then move
to the Mid Atlantic Coast by Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
No significant changes were made with the morning update. The
Freeze Warning was allowed to expired at 9 am. Some lake effect clouds
will hang out across far NE Ohio and NW PA through at least
midday.

Previous Discussion...
Clouds are quickly starting to break apart across northeast
Ohio but will hang tough for a while longer in northwest
Pennsylvania. Can't rule out a brief flurry or snow shower
inland northwest Pennsylvania over the next few hours. Flow will
begin to shift everything to the east as high pressure builds
in.

Temperatures have dipped into the lower 30s across much of the
freeze headline as expected. Will continue with the headline
until temperatures recover back above freezing.

Original Discussion...

Upper level troughiness responsible for forcing the polar jet stream
south of the area will shift east of the region today.  This will
allow a broad area of upper level ridging to push east toward the
region tonight with resultant large area of surface high pressure
moving east as well.  The high will gradually become the dominant
weather feature over the local area into the weekend.

In the mean time, two weather stories playing out at this time.  The
first is the decoupling winds and clear skies over the western
portions of the forecast area causing temperatures to drop into the
lower 30s.  A killing frost/freeze will take shape this morning in
the western half of the area and will likely bring an end to what is
left of the growing season.  Clear skies will prevail during the day
today through tonight as the high pressure remains strong with
subsidence taking place.

In the northeast, lake effect clouds holding tough with some very
light rain showers with some graupel mixed in taking place;
especially in the higher elevations south of the lake.  As the
surface high builds east, multiple things will take place gradually.
 The inversion will begin to lower, drier air will push east, and
the mean flow will gradually become westerly and then southwest. All
of these factors will help to diminish the lake effect machine
today.  Skies will begin to clear out later today into tonight.

More clouds will push east into the region Friday ahead of another
strong cold front that is poised to pass through the local area
Friday night. Showers will begin to advance east toward the area
from the west and affect the western portions of the forecast area
through the afternoon Friday.

Temperatures through the period will see cold air advection
gradually begin to wane with the high pressure moving off to the
east forcing a return southwest flow by tonight.  This will set-up a
warm air advection flow for Friday helping temperatures to rebound
back into the middle to possibly upper 50s after morning lows in the
lower to middle 30s. Most areas will likely see their growing season
come to a close.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A blocking pattern across the western U.S. will keep the Great Lakes
in northwest flow with a series of troughs of Canadian origin to
maintain the cool temperatures. Friday night will feature the
possibility of scattered light showers although the better
forcing/lift resides across central and southern OH and further
north across MI. The surface cold front will cross early Saturday
morning. H8 temps drop throughout the day and will have lake effect
showers develop. A few showers possible later in the day Saturday
across the non-snowbelt areas as the trough sharpens and moves
overhead. A few of these showers may linger into the evening, but
the overnight will dry out except for the snowbelt. At this point it
will turn cold enough for some snow inland/higher terrain. Surface
temperatures will be marginal for much to stick. The lake effect
slowly diminishes and by Sunday night the advancing high puts an end
to it. High temperatures Sunday will be the coolest of the week with
no one exceeding the upper 40s. Portions of nw PA may struggle to
get to 40.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The early part of next work week will largely be dry. Another cold
front will cross early Tuesday morning, but at this point we seem to
be on the outskirts of the upper support and have limited moisture
to work with. Beyond Tuesday though the models diverge but generally
place high pressure over the Great Lakes. Overall temperatures will
be close to seasonal averages.

.AVIATION /12Z Thursday THROUGH Monday/...
Gradual improvement in the sky cover at Erie, Akron-Canton, and
Youngstown. Skies should go clear by this afternoon all areas.
Winds are diminishing in the east as well. Should see winds 5 to
10 knots most areas through the forecast period. Otherwise, no
significant problems to deal with.

OUTLOOK...Non-VFR probable Friday night into Saturday night and
again Sunday night into Monday northeast.

.MARINE...
Will let the far western basin small craft advisory expire on
schedule. Winds have relaxed just enough. The relaxing trend will
continue today across the rest of the lake as high pressure slides
south of the lake. This will provide a brief window without a small
craft advisory for this afternoon. But the gradient will increase
again and will have an extended period of increased wind and waves.
Southwest flow Friday will shift to the northwest behind a cold
frontal passage early Saturday morning and be re-enforced with a
secondary trough passage Saturday evening. The north-northwest flow
will continue into Sunday before finally backing with the approach
of an expansive high across the Ohio Valley.
