2pm update...Expanded the Flood Watch further north in
Washington and Penobscot counties and added southern Piscataquis
County to the watch. The concern is that river rises from
snowmelt and rainfall will be enough to break up river ice...in
addition to urban flooding due to clogged culverts and storm
drains.

Not to much chg in the rn outlook ptn of the fcst for tdy into
this eve, with the rn shield initially ovrsprdng the N this morn
and then working Swrd ovr the rest of the Rgn by aftn. The most
sustained heavier rnfl will be ovr Downeast areas this aftn
into tngt (see hydro section of this disc). Fog has been
surprisingly slow to onset despite sfc dwpts now well abv fzg
ovr much of the area. So we indicate patchy fog this morn and
then areas of fog for this aftn and tngt once the lower atmos
becomes more saturated due to falling rain in addition to
contact condensation of moist air with snow pack. Fog will
dissipate from NNW to SSE ovrngt into the erly morn hrs Sat
behind the cold front. Prior to the cold frontal passage, winds
will be breezy ovr the Rgn and even windy alg the Downeast Coast
with gusts there reaching up to 40 mph.
Speaking of the cold front, there was little chg in the tmg of
chgovr from rn to mixed precip and mixed precip to snow from the
prev fcst update, slated to begin ovr the far NW in the late eve
hrs, far NE and N Cntrl areas late tngt and E Cntrl and Downeast
areas in the erly to as late as mid morn hrs alg the Downeast
coast. What we have noted is that the faster movement of the low
apch from the Cntrl Aplchns toward the Gulf of ME will mean less
time of transitional freezing rn and sleet, meaning less ice
accumulation than earlier thought, with max flat sfc accretions
of just less than a quarter inch ovr E Cntrl areas with lesser
amts elsewhere. By 7 am Sat, the sn/sleet transition will be
across the NW and far NE ptns of the Rgn. With less total precip
with the cold phase of this event, we optd to just go with 3
wntr wx adv areas, with the Nrn area staggered to begin at 11
pm tngt, the Cntrl area at 3 am Sat, and the Downeast area at 7
am Sat.
Otherwise temps will be near record highs tdy into this eve,
then sharply falling behind the arctic front ovrngt into early
Sat morn.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A strong Arctic cold front will be cutting across the area Saturday
morning as a wave of low pressure lifts along the front into the
western Gulf of Maine. Precipitation will transition over to snow
over the far northwest, freezing rain in central areas and remain
rain Downeast as the cold Arctic air undercuts the warmer air mass
in place over the region. By midday Saturday the front will be
reaching the coast with precipitation changing over to freezing rain
Downeast and snow elsewhere. However, the fast moving wave of low
pressure will quickly lift northeast and away and precipitation will
be winding down during the early afternoon with max snfl of 4 to
7 inches ovr the far NW and lesser totals as one traverses S and
E. Winter weather advisories will likely end late Saturday
aftn. The sky will partially clear overnight Saturday night.
This will be followed by a mostly clear and very cold day on
Sunday with highs Sunday only from the single digits across the
far north to the low 20s Downeast.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Monday will remain dry and very cold as Arctic high pressure remains
over the region. Our attention on Tuesday then turns to a wave of
low pressure running out ahead of a trough digging into the Great
Lakes region. Long range upper level anomalies are not currently
favoring significant storm development at this time. However, both
the GFS and the ECMWF are producing a surface low kicking out of an
open trough that may bring a period of snow Tuesday night into early
Wednesday, so will carry likely pops Downeast and a chance of snow
over the north. Dry and seasonable weather is then expected to
follow for the second half of the week as ridging builds into the
east and high pressure settles across the east coast.

SHORT TERM: Conditions will be LIFR Saturday morning in low
clouds and mixed precipitation. IFR conditions are likely
Saturday afternoon followed by an improvement to MVFR then VFR
Saturday night as high pressure builds in. VFR conditions are
then likely Sunday into Monday in high pressure. Conditions may
lower to MVFR then IFR in possible snow on Tuesday.

NEAR TERM: We have upgraded the gale watch to a warning
beginning Fri aftn and cont thru the ngt into erly Sat morn as
Srly winds increase to gale force gusts, with winds becoming SW

SHORT TERM: A SCA will likely be needed Saturday into Saturday
night for south winds, becoming northerly early Saturday with
the frontal passage. A SCA may still be needed Sunday. Winds
should then be below SCA Sunday night into early Tuesday with
high pressure moving across.

.HYDROLOGY...
Up to three inches of rain is forecast across the Down East
region Today through Saturday. With the increase in temperatures
across the region today the snow pack has already started to
melt. Guidance indicates that there is around 4 inches of water
content in the snow pack that could be released. Snow melt along
with the rain may cause flooding issues in poor drainage areas,
small rivers and streams. Ponding may flood
streets...especially with any clogged storm drains. Ice break-up
and movements may affect some coastal highways/culverts. The
flood watch remains in effect in the areas with the most
compelling combination of rainfall and sustained mild
temperatures before the cold front arrives by early Saturday
morning. With the recent cold snap and ice along the coast, the
break up of ice along coast may cause unusual issues. A bit
further inland, there's still a risk for some ice movement, and
will have to monitor carefully if rainfall forecasts increase
towards Bangor.
