.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure along the Gulf Coast region will lift northward to
the Western Carolinas tonight. Showers will continue into
Friday as the low lifts north of the area and the trailing cold
front moves through. A lake wind advisory is in effect from 7 AM
Friday to midnight with gusty winds expected in the wake of the
departing low. Rain-free conditions are then expected over the
weekend and through early next week as high pressure builds over
the region.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
A deep upper trough extending through the MS River Valley to
the Gulf of Mexico will slowly move east and cutoff just to our
west tonight.
A warm front has lifted through the forecast area with much of
the heavier rainfall exiting to the north. Light rain continues
over the area but not much accumulation is expected this
evening. Mild temperatures in the upper 50s to 60s will continue
into the evening. The main surface low will lift from the Deep
South into the southern Appalachians tonight. This will bring a
secondary round of rain into the SC Piedmont. Models indicate
the best potential for additional rainfall in the western half
of the forecast area. Amounts are typically expected to remain
around one quarter of an inch or less. Once the low lifts north
of the forecast area, the heavier rain should subside with only
light rain expected into early Friday morning. A trailing cold
front will push into the forecast area Friday morning bringing
in cooler temps and drier air. Expect temperatures in the low to
mid 50s Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Friday/Friday night...Nearly vertically stacked deep low
pressure system centered over north Ga early in the period will
be lifting to the northeast. Expect deeper moisture to be north
of the area Friday morning. Precipitable water likely 1 inch or
less by mid morning. Steep mid level lapse rates though around
8.5C/km and some surface based instability possible as surface
low moves northeast across Upstate SC. Strong short wave moving
through early in the day likely resulting in sufficient lift.
So, with mos pops remaining high expect numerous showers mid
morning through early afternoon especially in the Piedmont and
west Midlands. Lower pops in the southeast Midlands where
showers may be more scattered. Can't rule out a thunderstorm
given models suggesting some weak instability but in-situ wedge
may be stronger than models suggest. For now will leave thunder
out. As low moves to the northeast, a cold front will move
through the area 18z-21z. The main issue of the day will be
strong gusty winds behind the front. With the surface low
deepening through the day (987mb), a tight pressure gradient
will develop across the central and south Midlands/CSRA. Some of
the model guidance suggest winds gusts to near 40 mph in the
afternoon mainly east/southeast of CAE. Expect sustained winds
20 to 30 mph with higher gusts. Will monitor model trends for
possible wind advisory but for now lake wind advisory seems
appropriate from 12z to midnight. Max temperatures mainly in the
50s.
Any showers should diminish by 00z from southwest to northeast
with clearing skies as cold advection and drier air spreads
across the region. Temperatures may be slow to fall despite cold
advection and prefer warmer guidance for min temps...mid 30s to
low 40s.
Saturday and Saturday night...Pressure ridge extending from the
Gulf coast region northeast across the area. 500mb flow will
be zonal across the region with no precipitation expected.
Highs Saturday will be in the 50s and lows Saturday night will
be in the lower to mid 30s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Generally benign weather expected during this period with prevailing
westerly zonal 500mb flow. A series of fast moving shortwave troughs
will cross the Mid Atlantic region/Carolina Sunday through
Tuesday but moisture likely limited. Moisture returns late in
the period . A much stronger system will develop over the
Central Plains mid week with increasing moisture and rain threat
arriving after the end of the forecast period. Temperatures
during this period will be near to above normal with highs in
the 50s to lower 60s and lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

.AVIATION /03Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Expect mainly MVFR conditions during the TAF period but there
will be periods of IFR. It will be breezy.
Low pressure in the region will begin to lift north of the area
late Friday. Considerable warp-around moisture will continue
and most of the guidance indicates an MVFR ceiling.
There will be a strong low-level jet associated with the low.
Wind will be relatively light because of the near-surface stable
layer overnight. Based on the NAM and KCAE 88D VAD wind profile
we have included low-level wind shear in the terminal
forecasts.
There will be increased mixing with the strong low north of the
area during the day Friday. The GFS LAMP suggests southwest wind
gusts around 25 knots.
EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...Wrap-around moisture associated with
low pressure north of the area may lead to MVFR or IFR ceilings
during the rest of Friday night. Breezy conditions will continue
into Friday night. No significant impacts are expected during
the rest of the outlook period.
