.SYNOPSIS...
A flow of cold air over the Eastern Great Lakes will continue to
bring a few lake effect rain and wet snow showers east of Lake
Ontario this evening before ending overnight. An area of low
pressure will bring widespread rain and wet snow starting Friday
morning through early afternoon before transitioning to rain later
Friday afternoon. Some minor slushy accumulations are possible,
especially across higher terrain. Accumulating lake effect snow is
expected late Friday night through Saturday night east of Lakes Erie
and Ontario. Temperatures will remain well below normal most days
through at least late next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Regional radars this early morning display a few weakening lake
effect rain showers along the southern Lake Ontario shoreline. This
activity will continue to fizzle this early morning. Meanwhile IR
satellite imagery displays mid level clouds thickening across the
region from the west. Precipitation from these clouds will hold off
until after daybreak.

Temperatures overnight will cool to the upper 20s across the higher
terrain of the Western Southern Tier and the Tug Hill. Elsewhere,
low temps tonight will dip to the low 30s.

Widespread precipitation will quickly move into the area starting
Friday morning from southwest to northeast as large scale ascent
quickly increases in response to strong isentropic upglide, DPVA and
upper level diffluence ahead of a sharp mid level trough over the
western Great Lakes. Given the quality of moisture and dynamics,
precipitation will be widespread once it begins. Expect an onset by
mid morning across much of Western NY, and closer to midday across
the Genesee Valley and western Finger Lakes, and early afternoon
east of Lake Ontario.

Precipitation type will be very tricky with this system. The leading
edge may be a rain/snow mix, but this will likely change over to a
few hours of mainly wet snow across Western NY as the column cools
in response to cooling from melting, dynamic cooling, and
evaporative cooling. Following a few hours of snow, ongoing warm
advection will warm the column enough to change most areas over to
rain by mid to late afternoon. The one exception may be the top of
the Tug Hill Plateau, which may remain wet snow through the event.

Surface air temperatures will be at or just above freezing during
the snow Friday, and the ground is still quite warm. Snowfall rates
are not likely to be high enough to fully overcome the warm ground.
With this in mind, expect 1-2 inches across the higher terrain south
of Buffalo and Rochester, and also the Tug Hill and western
foothills of the Adirondacks. Across lower elevations including
Buffalo and Rochester, expect a slushy coating on the grass. With
the exception of the Tug Hill, whatever snow that sticks will melt
later in the day. High temperatures will reach the upper 30s to
lower 40s in most areas by Friday evening after being cooler most of
the day.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
This Short Term starts with deepening low pressure across the
Central Great Lakes Friday evening. A cold front will be moving
across Western NY while relatively warm, moist air continues to move
across the North Country. Widespread rain and snow showers will be
ongoing with surface temperatures holding steady to slowly climbing
into the upper 30s to low 40s east of Lake Ontario. Behind the cold
front, cold air advection and subsidence will spread from west to
east. A lake response will begin almost immediately Friday night off
Lake Erie and by Saturday morning off Lake Ontario as 850mb
temperatures plummet to -10 to -8 C by Saturday morning. Lake-
induced equilibrium levels will be around 10k while surface
temperatures fall into the upper 20s to low 30s. Off Lake
Erie...Mean winds will begin as southwest before veering to the west
late Friday night. Winds will then become southwest again by
Saturday morning. A single lake effect band is expected to form
Friday evening near Buffalo metro and southern portions of the
Niagara Frontier. Winds are going to wobble from the southwest to
the west and back to the southwest through Saturday morning and will
likely move from the Northtowns to the Southern Tier and back
through Saturday morning. As temperatures reach the upper 20s to low
30s Saturday morning, snow will start to accumulate Friday night and
into Saturday. Amounts of 3-6 inches are expected across the
Southtowns and northern Southern Tier with lesser amounts of 1-2
inches across the Northtowns and near the NY/PA border. Off Lake
Ontario... southwest flow initially will put a lake effect band near
Watertown before moving south as winds become westerly by Saturday
afternoon. Snowfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are expected, mainly
across the Tug Hill Plateau when the band becomes westerly and the
longest fetch is realized.

A trough axis or secondary cold front will move across the forecast
area late morning-afternoon on Saturday. This will increase forcing
and moisture while causing winds to become southwest ahead of it.
Lake effect bands will respond by moving northward. The forcing from
the boundary and mid-level trough axis will provide a brief period
of widespread snowfall as well. Around an inch of snow is expected
during this time, outside of lake effect bands. Daytime temperatures
will hover in the low to mid 30s with a few places reaching the
upper 30s outside of snow showers.

Northwest flow will persist behind the cold front and through
Saturday night. Upstream moisture will be decreasing while lake
effect bands continue southeast of the lakes. Additional snowfall
accumulations of 2-4 inches are expected across the Southtowns and
northern Southern Tier and 3-6 inches across Oswego County and the
south side of the Tug Hill. Low temperatures in the low to mid 20s
are expected Saturday night. Storm total snow accumulations of
6-10 inches are expected across the Southtowns and northern
Southern Tier to 1-2 inches across the Northtowns and into the
Genesee Valley. Accumulations of 4-8 inches expected across
Oswego County and the Tug Hill Plateau. Advisories and a
potential Winter Storm Watch may be needed.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Environment becoming less favorable for lake snows by Monday as high
pressure pushes eastward from the Ohio Valley. Weak warm air
advection should get temperatures a bit closer to normal with most
highs in the lower to mid 40s.

The weather will get a lot more interesting beyond Monday as
mid-level troughing will continue to dig across the central
CONUS and begin to pivot across the south-central U.S. The
amplification of the upper level pattern will allow for a
surface low to develop in the vicinity of the northwestern Gulf
of Mexico, then start to move up the east coast early next week.

This system will certainly need to watched during the Monday
night into Tuesday time frame in the coming days, as the setup
may likely produce the first widespread accumulating snowfall of
the season. It should be noted that there are still model
differences in the overall evolution of this system which will
impact low level thermal profiles and areas of main forcing,
ultimately determining which areas will see accumulating snow
and which may see more of a mix or even all rain.

Behind this system, we will get into the coldest air so far this
season for Tuesday night into Wednesday. Accumulating lake effect
snows east and southeast of the lakes look very likely.

The airmass begins to moderate some by Thursday as high pressure
slides across the area from the Ohio Valley which will help to
diminishing the lake snows.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
For the 06Z TAFS weakening bands of lake effect clouds (MVFR) and
light precipitation south of Lake Ontario will fizzle through the
next 06 hours, while aloft mid level clouds thicken from the west.
These clouds will lower as an area of low pressure lifts northward
across Lake Erie this morning. Precipitation will start as a
rain/snow mix, then likely change to all snow with IFR visibilities
midday as the lower air column evaporatively cools, then change back
to rain as a narrow wedge of warm air pushes across the region. On
this wedge of warm air aloft will be a strong LLJ, near 45 to 50
knots at 2K feet, and LLWS will be placed in the KJHW TAF site.

This deepening area of low pressure over now southern Canada will
drive a cold front across the TAF sites this late afternoon and
evening, bringing another round of light rain showers. Behind the
cold front much colder air aloft will flow across the Lakes,
bringing a band of lake effect rain that will quickly change over to
snow. This will bring additional impacts to the TAF sites tonight,
especially KJHW...and possibly KBUF off Lake Erie, and very late
tonight KART off Lake Ontario. Flight conditions within the lake
effect snow will again deteriorate to IFR or lower.

Outlook...

Saturday and Sunday...Mainly VFR...except areas of lake effect snow
and attendant IFR east of the lakes.
Monday...Areas of MVFR with a chance of rain/snow showers.
Tuesday...Areas of IFR in snow, possibly mixed with rain at lower
elevations.

Westerly winds will quickly diminish tonight as high pressure
briefly builds across the eastern Great Lakes, with winds and waves
continuing to diminish overnight.

After a brief lull in winds and waves tonight with the passage of a
surface high pressure, another area of low pressure will track just
to the north of Lake Erie by Friday night. This feature will bring a
cold front across the Lakes, with another round of potential
westerly gales on the Lakes early Saturday morning and through the
day. Gale Watches are in effect for Lake Ontario from early Saturday
morning through late Saturday evening.
