Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A large storm system pushing from the Upper Great Lakes into Quebec
Province will continue to generate occasional rain and gusty winds
across our region early this morning...with conditions then turning
progressively less unsettled from west to east through the rest of
the day as the low passes by to our north and weakens. At the same
time...the low will also pull unseasonably mild air northward across
our region today...with most of the area seeing highs ranging
through the 50s...and a few spots in far western New York possibly
pushing 60 degrees. A pair of cold fronts will then cross the region
tonight and Saturday morning while reintroducing colder and more
seasonable conditions for the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 0830z...the steadiest rain has shifted eastward into the
Finger Lakes and North Country...with more occasional/intermittent
rain found further back to the west across the remainder of the
region. Regional surface observations across the North Country
indicate that temps across Jefferson county have entirely warmed
above freezing... so have dropped the Winter Weather Advisory for
that county. Meanwhile a number of locations across Lewis county are
still right around freezing and therefore supportive of some
additional light icing...so have left the advisory intact for that
county until 7 am...by which time readings there should also be
entirely above freezing.

During the course of today...the large surface low responsible for
the current unsettled conditions across our region will track from
the Michigan Straits into Quebec Province while slowly weakening.
In the process...it will finish pushing the last of several warm
frontal segments across our region...while at the same time the
system's attendant plume of deepest/richest moisture will slide off
into eastern New York and New England and give way to increasing
dry slotting aloft. Consequently...the general decrease in large-
scale forcing and deeper moisture will allow for occasional rain to
gradually taper off to some leftover scattered showers from west to
east...with additional rainfall amounts ranging from a tenth to a
quarter inch across western New York...and from a third to two
thirds of an inch across North Central New York...though upsloping
may help to produce locally higher rainfall amounts in the vicinity
of the Tug Hill.

At the same time...the system's attendant strong (65-70 knot) low
level jet will also slide off to our east...and this will allow
the gusty southerly winds we're seeing early this morning to also
steadily diminish from west to east. The strongest winds will again
be along the Lake Erie shoreline of Southern Erie and Chautauqua
counties early this morning...where some advisory-worthy gusts to 50
mph or so will remain possible until 7 am...and where a Wind
Advisory consequently remains in effect. Elsewhere...winds will gust
to around 45 mph near and immediately to the lee of the rest of our
higher terrain through early this morning...while the remainder of
the region will see weaker wind gusts to the 30-40 mph range.

While the low will be slowly weakening as it passes by to our north
today...it will still remain plenty strong enough to pull plenty of
unseasonably mild air northward across our region. This will result
in temperatures surging into the upper 40s and lower 50s east of
Lake Ontario and well into the 50s across the rest of the region...
with a few spots within favored areas of downslope flow across far
western New York possibly approaching or even reaching the 60 degree
mark.

As we move into tonight...the low will track eastward across Quebec
and toward the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River. As it does so...it
will push an initial trailing weak cold front across our region this
evening... before pivoting a secondary and stronger cold front into
our area late tonight. In concert with increasing upsloping to the
lee of the lakes as the low level flow turns more westerly and
increases over time...the two fronts will help to generate some
scattered to numerous rain showers (most numerous across the higher
terrain east of both lakes)...which will gradually mix with/
changeover to snow showers overnight as cold air advection
increases. The developing cold air advection pattern will also bring
about an end to our brief flirtation with milder temperatures...with
readings settling back down into the lower to mid 30s areawide by
the start of Saturday morning.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A yo-yo of a short term period looks to be in store. A rapid
transition out of warmer conditions into a short cold period will be
followed by another warm and wet interlude to end the short term
period.

Mid-level dry slotting starts out nudging into the area to start
Friday night. This should largely cut off steady rain shower
activity and replace it with wind blow drizzle. As cold advection
starts to encompass the area later in the night, the dendritic
growth thermal layer starts to fall back down toward the moist
boundary layer. This should gradually allow for drizzle to
transition to snow shower activity. Colder air does enter picture
more rapidly on Saturday on northwesterly flow. This should allow for
more widespread lake effect snow shower activity, however boundary
layer moisture will be starting to peel off by then. Thus,
substantial snow shower accumulations are not anticipated at this
time.

Cold air magnitude peaks out Saturday night before the transient mid-
level trough that brought it into our area again starts to eject to
the northeast and the subtropical ant-cyclone centered to the east
of the Bahamas again starts to grow in amplitude. This allows for
ridging to rapidly build up the east coast of the U.S. As this
occurs, a deep trough digs into the Front Range of the Rockies.
Several short waves look to shear off from this main upper low and
track rapidly toward the Great Lakes, further driving warmer air
northward ahead of them. This will allow for rapidly warming
conditions and rain to develop from southwest to northeast across
our area on Monday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Tuesday, the 850 hPa thermal ridge of higher temperatures will be
just to our east, and any precipitation that forms as a cold front
passes through will be a mix of rain and snow. This precipitation
will have added support of lift ahead of a nearing upper level
trough.

This cold front will usher in much colder air temperatures with 850
hPa temperatures forecasted to lower into the -15 to -20C range.
This cold airmass will set the stage for a return of lake effect
snow. An upper level trough will pass through the area Wednesday and
Thursday, thus there will likely be some oscillation to the lake
bands of snow, but there may be moderate to potentially heavy lake
effect snow east of the lakes towards the end of this forecast
period.

Through sunrise the region will continue to experience occasional
light to moderate rain...with this briefly mixed with freezing rain
at the onset across far interior portions of the North Country
(i.e., well away from the KART terminal). A strong (65-70 knot) low
level jet passing across the region will also bring gusty southerly
winds at the surface along with LLWS aloft...while our flight
conditions settle through the VFR range across the lower elevations
and the MVFR range across the higher terrain.

Through the daylight hours of today...occasional rain will generally
tend to taper off to scattered showers from west to east...with
winds also steadily relaxing from west to east. This said...the
diminishing winds and moist lower levels will probably also allow
for ceilings to drop to MVFR across the lower elevations and IFR
across the higher terrain...where some fog may also come into play.

Tonight a mix of MVFR to IFR conditions will prevail as a pair of
cold fronts push across the region...with the latter generating some
scattered to numerous rain and snow showers.

Outlook...
Saturday...MVFR/IFR with scattered to numerous rain and
snow showers.
Sunday...Mainly VFR.
Monday...VFR/MVFR with scattered to numerous rain showers...which
may be mixed with snow showers initially.
Tuesday...Mainly VFR with a chance of rain and snow showers.

.MARINE...
Sprawling low pressure will track from the Upper Great Lakes to
Quebec Province while slowly weakening today...before pushing
eastward toward the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River tonight.
In the process...this system will finish pushing a warm front
across the Lower Lakes early this morning...followed by a pair
of trailing cold fronts tonight and early Saturday.

As all this takes place...a period of brisk southerlies early
this morning will relax during the course of today...before
veering to southwesterly/westerly and freshening rather quickly
again tonight as the aforementioned cold fronts approach and cross
our region. As this will result in two periods of advisory-worthy
conditions that will be separated by only a rough 6-12 hour long
break...for the sake of simplicity have just extended the existing
Small Craft Advisories through tonight and into Saturday to cover
both. In addition...have also issued some new SCA headlines for the
Upper Niagara River/Buffalo Harbor and western portions of Lake
Ontario to cover the period of stronger southwesterlies/westerlies
expected tonight into early Saturday.

Finally...it should also be mentioned that while forecast confidence
is currently too low for an upgrade...some lower-end gale force
winds are also not out of the question on eastern portions of Lake
Ontario later tonight. At this point have kept winds at 30 knots as
the orientation of the low level flow may well help to keep the
worst conditions confined to Canadian waters...however this
potential will still need to be closely monitored by subsequent
shifts.
