.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system will move into New England and away from our region
today. Snow east of Lake Ontario will diminish by midday, though
some light lake effect snow showers will persist through tonight
south of the lakes. High pressure will build into the area Sunday.
Much colder weather will persist through at least the first part of
next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The surface low is moving quickly northward along the Maine coast
this morning. The heavy snow from earlier this morning is rapidly
tapering off, with some moderate snow left east of Lake Ontario. The
back edge of the synoptic snow is progressing through Wayne and
Ontario counties at 930AM, and will continue to quickly taper off
through midday. Behind the synoptic snow, some limited lake effect
snow on NW flow will continue south of Lake Ontario today, but any
additional accumulations will be light, an inch or so in persistent
bands. The Winter Storm Warning has been dropped from the Genesee
Valley westward.
Snows will linger into tonight south of the lakes as a northerly
flow on the back side of the departing low draws down much
colder air across the lower Great Lakes. This will especially be the
case south of Lake Ontario, where an additional inch or so of snow
will be possible this evening through early tonight. The remainder
of the area should see some upslope/low clouds which should mostly
dissipate toward this evening.
High temperatures today will only be in the teens with wind chill
readings below zero. Temperatures tonight will drop into the
single digits along the lake plains, in the single digits below
zero across portions of the Southern Tier and as cold as 20
below zero across portions of the North Country.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will move into the eastern Great Lakes Sunday.
Northwest flow will weaken across the region Sunday morning and any
lake effect snow showers will end by Sunday afternoon. Outside of
lingering lake effect clouds, mostly clear conditions are expected
into Monday morning. Clear and calm conditions will make it cold
Sunday night with temperatures in the single digits across Western
NY to the single digits below zero across the Genesee Valley and
North Country.
High pressure will move into Quebec Providence Monday and southerly
flow will begin across the region. A closed upper level low will dig
into the Great Lakes region Monday while surface low pressure moves
across MI by Monday night. Warm air advection ahead of this system
will increase cloud cover from west to east Monday with temperatures
reaching the upper teens to low 20s. Widespread light snow will move
into Western NY Monday evening ahead of an advancing cold front.
Light snow will move from west to east across the region Monday
night and snow will likely be east of Lake Ontario by Tuesday
morning. Widespread accumulating snow is possible and may impact the
Monday afternoon/evening and Tuesday morning commute.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Looks like a transition to a chance of some lake snows with cooling
850mb temps and northwest flow behind the clipper Tuesday night. Not
expecting a significant snowfall from the clipper but could be
enough to make a tricky Tuesday morning commute. Temps on Tuesday
should be able to reach into the 20s again then fall into the teens
and single digits Tuesday night.
Generally benign conditions can be expected during this period...as
our region should be just out of the reach of a potentially
significant coastal storm system. The largest impacts for our region
will be a two day reinforcing shot of colder air on the backside of
the storm...and some nuisance light snow over the Eastern Lake
Ontario region.
As we push into Friday...the storm system should be exiting across
the Canadian maritimes while warm advection will begin over our
forecast area. After a pair of days when temperatures will average 5
degrees below normal...the mercury is forecast to climb back to
normal to end the week.

.AVIATION /15Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The general snow with widespread IFR east of Lake Ontario will
continue through late morning before quickly tapering off around
midday. Behind the main area of snow, light lake effect snow showers
will continue through the rest of today south of Lake Ontario with
areas of MVFR to IFR VSBY and MVFR CIGS. Light lake effect snow will
continue south of Lake Ontario tonight with local MVFR to IFR
conditions, otherwise mainly VFR will prevail.
Outlook...
Sunday...MVFR with possible IFR in a chance of snow showers.
Monday thru Wednesday...Mainly VFR with a chance of snow showers.

Northwest to northerly winds will be found on the lakes this morning
as a deepening surface low tracks from near New York City into New
England. This will produce a period of Small Craft conditions today.
