.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system to our south will move into New England today.
Snow will diminish this morning, though some lake effect snow
showers will persist through tonight south of the lakes. High
pressure will build into the area Sunday. Much colder weather
will persist through at least the first part of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
08Z surface analysis showed the low just to the southwest of
New York City. Plume of moisture continuing to stream northward
into the area of the western side of the surface low along the
low level jet axis. Surface observations continuing to
indicated moderate to heavy snow across the bulk of western and
north central New York, although a sharp back edge to the snow
shield starting to progress into Niagara country. This back edge
showed favorably by both the 00z 3km NAM and latest HRRR.
The synoptic snows will wind down considerably for far western New
York between 4 am and 7 am, the Genesee Valley and most of the
Finger Lakes between 7 am and 10 am, then into the North Country by
noon. This diminishing trend will all be courtesy of the surface
low track northeast off the New England seaboard with the synoptic
moisture diminishes greatly at the same time.
Snows will linger into tonight south of the lakes as a northerly
flow on the back side of the departing low draws down much
colder air across the lower Great Lakes. This will especially
be the case south of Lake Ontario, where an additional few
inches of snow will be possible through early tonight. The
remainder of the area should see some upslope/low clouds which
should mostly dissipate toward this evening.
High temperatures today will only be in the teens with wind chill
readings below zero. Temperatures tonight will drop into the
single digits along the lake plains, in the single digits below
zero across portions of the Southern Tier and as cold as 20
below zero across portions of the North Country.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will move into the eastern Great Lakes Sunday.
Northwest flow will weaken across the region Sunday morning and any
lake effect snow showers will end by Sunday afternoon. Outside of
lingering lake effect clouds, mostly clear conditions are expected
into Monday morning. Clear and calm conditions will make it cold
Sunday night with temperatures in the single digits across Western
NY to the single digits below zero across the Genesee Valley and
North Country.
High pressure will move into Quebec Providence Monday and southerly
flow will begin across the region. A closed upper level low will dig
into the Great Lakes region Monday while surface low pressure moves
across MI by Monday night. Warm air advection ahead of this system
will increase cloud cover from west to east Monday with temperatures
reaching the upper teens to low 20s. Widespread light snow will move
into Western NY Monday evening ahead of an advancing cold front.
Light snow will move from west to east across the region Monday
night and snow will likely be east of Lake Ontario by Tuesday
morning. Widespread accumulating snow is possible and may impact the
Monday afternoon/evening and Tuesday morning commute.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Looks like a transition to a chance of some lake snows with cooling
850mb temps and northwest flow behind the clipper Tuesday night. Not
expecting a significant snowfall from the clipper but could be
enough to make a tricky Tuesday morning commute. Temps on Tuesday
should be able to reach into the 20s again then fall into the teens
and single digits Tuesday night.
Generally benign conditions can be expected during this period...as
our region should be just out of the reach of a potentially
significant coastal storm system. The largest impacts for our region
will be a two day reinforcing shot of colder air on the backside of
the storm...and some nuisance light snow over the Eastern Lake
Ontario region.
As we push into Friday...the storm system should be exiting across
the Canadian maritimes while warm advection will begin over our
forecast area. After a pair of days when temperatures will average 5
degrees below normal...the mercury is forecast to climb back to
normal to end the week.

.AVIATION /09Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Snow will continue early this morning with widespread IFR and some
LIFR conditions as a low moves from NYC into southern New
England. Somewhat lighter snow may be found toward KIAG and KBUF
in comparison to areas with the Genesee Valley and points east.
Between 12z and 18z, IFR conditions will slowly improve to
MVFR. Snow will taper off from west to east this morning with
improvement to MVFR/VFR, with some lingering lake effect (and
localized IFR) snow south of Lake Ontario near KROC this
afternoon.
Outlook...
Tonight and Sunday...MVFR with possible IFR in a chance of snow
showers.
Monday thru Wednesday...Mainly VFR with a chance of snow showers.

Northwest to northerly winds will be found on the lakes this morning
as a deepening surface low tracks from near New York City into New
England. This will produce a period of high end Small Craft
conditions today with winds peaking near 30 knots. Winds and waves
will diminish this evening and Sunday.
