Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will bring a general light snow to the region, with
lake effect snow showers following for Thursday through Saturday
southeast of the lakes. Bitter wind chills, and likely the coldest
airmass of the season, will arrive for Friday and Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
An upper level trough, located over the Great Lakes will move
eastward overnight. Heights will fall during this time and mid-
level moisture will increase. This moisture will be enhanced some by
lake moisture with a band of snow moving south of the Buffalo area
overnight and into the Lake Erie shore from Angola into Chautauqua
County. This band will drop rapidly southward through the early
morning hours, settling across the Boston Hills and Western Southern
Tier late tonight. Snowfall rates will be modest, with around an
inch across Buffalo metro, and 1 to 2 inches across the snow belt
through daybreak Thursday. The band will turn into multi bands
across the Southern Tier where snow showers will persist through
Thursday. There will be an upstream moisture source from Huron
however synoptic scale moisture and low inversion heights will
inhibit heavy snow. Expect another 1-3 inches in most persistent
bands on Thursday.

Off Lake Ontario, a similar story will play out several hours later
with snow develop across the Saint Lawrence Valley after in the wee
hours of the morning. Winds will be light, and this will linger
across Lake Ontario before very slowly moving east of Lake Ontario
just before daybreak. The lake effect band will finally push south
of Lake Ontario Thursday morning. This may result in an inch or two
north of Watertown through daybreak, with little if any accumulation
elsewhere. Things get interesting as a strengthening coastal low
pressure moves along the east coast. The Great Lakes upper level
trough will dig southward in response to the coastal low moving into
the Canadian Maritimes. Most of the precipitation from the coastal
low will be east of the region with the exception of a potential
convergence band that sets up across eastern Lake Ontario Thursday
morning. This combined with a lake effect band off Ontario will
intensify snowfall across the southeast shore of Lake Ontario.
Snowfall rates will likely increase and snowfall amounts of 2-4
inches will be possible through Thursday afternoon. A Winter Storm
Watch begins Thursday afternoon for Wayne-Northern Cayuga-Oswego
counties.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
...Dangerously cold with accompanying lake effect snows for the
end of the week...

Moving into Thursday night, the main focus in the Eastern U.S. will
be on the intense coastal low that will be continuing to pound New
England as it tracks across the Gulf of Maine and moves north into
the Canadian Maritimes. However, closer to home, the main concern in
the lower Great Lakes will be the bitterly cold arctic airmass that
will be drawn across the region in the wake of this impressive
system. This will be the coldest shot of air we have seen yet, with
lows dipping into the single digits below zero south of Lake
Ontario, while the North Country will plunge into the 10 to 20 below
range.

Even colder air will arrive over the region on Friday, when
temperatures will fail to climb above zero across many areas, with
even the warmest areas barely topping 5 above zero both Friday and
Saturday. Friday night, temperatures will fall even lower, with 5 to
10 below zero expected south of Lake Ontario, while in the North
Country, ambient temperatures may plunge as low as -30. To add
insult to injury, a brisk northwesterly flow will be in place across
the region during this period, as a fairly robust pressure gradient
will remain in place between the departing low and an arctic high to
our west, over the upper Midwest and western/central Great Lakes.
This will keep wind chills dangerously cold from Thursday night
through Saturday, with readings as low as -25 in western New York to
-40 in the North Country.  Even during the day on Friday and
Saturday, wind chills will run in the -15 to -25 range. These wind
chills are dangerous, as exposed skin can freeze in a matter of
minutes. A wind chill watch remains in effect for all of the
forecast area for this period.

In addition to the bitterly cold temperatures, the cold advection
across the lakes on well-aligned northwesterly flow will generate
lake effect snows southeast of the lakes over a fairly prolonged
period, from Thursday afternoon into Saturday. While temperatures
will actually be colder than the dendritic growth zone at times,
limiting accumulation rates, the sheer persistence of the flow and
the magnitude of lake instability may still result in accumulations
in excess of a foot through this period southeast of Lake Ontario,
necessitating a winter storm watch. Shorter fetch southeast of Lake
Erie and the likelihood of multi-banded LES should keep
accumulations lower through the period, on the order of 4-8 inches
total.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A brief reprieve from the harshly cold temperatures still appears
in store for the first half of this period...as a complex/double-
barrelled area of low pressure translates eastward across the
central and eastern CONUS/southern Canada. Continued steady warm
advection out ahead of this system will result in temperatures
largely rebounding into the 20s Sunday and into the 30s areawide on
Monday...however the warmup will come with a bit of a price as the
warm advection regime will also supply sufficient lift and moisture
to result in a widespread general snowfall from Sunday night through
Monday night. Prior to the arrival of the above system...Sunday
itself should be mainly dry...aside from some dying lake effect
snow showers and flurries east/northeast of the lakes early Sunday
morning...and lower-end chances for some initial warm advection-
driven light snow showers later Sunday afternoon.

This system will pass off to our east on Tuesday. In its wake...
progressively colder conditions will return through midweek along
with renewed opportunities for lake effect snow east and southeast
of the lakes...and more scattered snow showers elsewhere. Over the
last 24 hours...the main medium range guidance packages have come
into better agreement on more amplified upper level troughing and
attendant arctic-sourced air settling back across our region through
midweek. While this next cold airmass does not currently look to be
quite as cold as the one we will experience this Friday and Saturday...
it will still be plenty cold enough to drive daytime highs back down
into the 15-20 range by next week Wednesday.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A brief period of lake effect snow will continue overnight east of
the lakes as a mid level trough crosses the area. The trough itself
will only produce scattered light snow showers with spotty MVFR.
East of the lakes expect a brief 1-2 hour period of IFR in somewhat
steadier snow. Off Lake Erie, this will move out of KBUF shortly,
and begin to move into the KJHW area as winds become more westerly.
Off Lake Ontario, this will cross KART before daybreak.

On Thursday expect just a few scattered snow showers in the morning
with areas of MVFR. Lake effect snow showers will increase southeast
of the lakes in the afternoon, with multiple bands producing areas
of IFR VSBY and MVFR CIGS. Outside of the lake effect, scattered
snow showers will produce areas of MVFR. This will continue through
Thursday night.

Outlook...

Friday through Saturday...Areas of IFR in lake effect snow showers
southeast of the lakes.
Sunday and Monday...chance of snow showers. MVFR/IFR possible.

Winds and waves will temporarily fall below small craft criteria
tonight on Lake Ontario, but will increase again Thursday. This
will result in a prolonged period of conditions meeting small
craft criteria on the lakes and some of the rivers. This will
