* IMPACTS...Consecutive days of dangerous heat and humidity will
bring an increased risk for heat related illness. The elderly,
very young, pregnant, and those with heart and respiratory
conditions that don't have access to air conditioning are
especially at risk during long lasting heat waves.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous
situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of
fluids...stay in an air-conditioned room...stay out of the sun...
and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work...the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency - call 9 1 1.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in
vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during
warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal
temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 29, 1:48 AM EDT, 1 hour 45 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Buffalo NY
148 AM EDT Fri Jun 29 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
Stacked high pressure over the Lower Great Lakes will generate a
prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather through the holiday
weekend. Apparent temperatures Saturday and Sunday will climb
well into the 90s to the lower 100s, so heat related headlines can
be expected. Into next week, while no longer at record levels,
mercury levels will remain well above normal.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
High pressure centered over West Virginia will continue to ridge
north across western and north-central New York overnight.
Increasing heights aloft will occur overnight and with mainly clear
skies, higher dewpoints and calm winds will help with the formation
of patchy fog in low-lying areas especially across the Western
Southern Tier and North Country. Low temperatures will run very mild
ranging from the upper 50s across the Southern Tier to the low to
mid 60s elsewhere.

Any fog that forms overnight will quickly lift Friday morning. High
pressure moves closer to the eastern Great Lakes Friday and mostly
sunny conditions are expected. Warm air advection and subsidence
will lead to temperatures in the low to mid 80s and upper 80s across
the Lake Plains.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
...Dangerously High Apparent Temperatures Likely This Weekend...

Record heat in the 90s will combine with dew points in the 70s to
produce very uncomfortable...and potentially dangerous...apparent
temperatures through at LEAST this weekend...as an anomalously
strong sub tropical ridge will dominate the Lower Great Lakes and
Mid Atlantic region. The heart of this impressive ridge will be over
the Ohio Valley as we open this period Friday night...then as we
advance through the holiday weekend...it will drift to the east
across Pennsylvania. Putting the strength of the ridge into
perspective...the +2 to 3 STD feature has a late June return
interval of 5 to 10 years with its corresponding heat (H7/85
temps) having a climatological recurrence of 10-20 years.

As the >595dm sub tropical ridge moves over our region this
weekend...the accompanying H85 temps will range from +22 to 24c. The
bulk of this should mix out to support afternoon max temps away from
lake influences that will be in the low to mid 90s on Saturday...
and with the help of a warmer morning start...the mid to upper 90s
on Sunday. Tack roughly 10 degrees onto these values to account for
the effects of very high humidity...and you attain apparent temps
(heat index values) that will most certainly reach at LEAST heat
advisory levels. There is even a relatively high risk that sites
across the lake plains could reach excessive heat criteria (apparent
temps >104) on Sunday. The only relief from the heat will be found
near the lakes. This will include the IMMEDIATE BUF metro area where
a southwest flow will hold max temps in the mid to upper 80s.

In regards to overnight mins... they will generally be in the 60s
Friday night...then will mainly range from 70 to 75 Saturday and
Sunday nights. The very warm and humid conditions lasting through
the nighttime hours are perhaps the most dangerous aspect of heat
waves for vulnerable portions of the population. This limits the
ability to cool non-air conditioned buildings at night, with the
health impacts of the heat compounding over successive days.

The close proximity of the upper level ridge will keep the region
rain free both Saturday and Sunday. The one exception may be across
the Saint Lawrence Valley northeast of the Thousand Islands. One or
two thunderstorm complexes may ride the top of the ridge across
Ontario and Quebec...and a few of these may reach into the Saint
Lawrence Valley at times.

Below are the record high temperatures for this weekend.

City Saturday Sunday
Buffalo 94 (1963) 93 (1963)
Rochester 96 (1964) 96 (1901)
Watertown 89 (1997) 92 (1967)

After a holiday weekend of what promises to be highlighted by record
temperatures and widespread heat related headlines (advisories and
possible warnings)...a pair of Pacific based shortwaves crossing
Ontario and Quebec on Monday will partially break down the
oppressive East Coast ridge. Its probably more accurate to say that
the ridge will be temporarily suppressed. In either case...this will
be just enough to take the edge off the heat and humidity...but it
certainly won't last and may even be imperceptible by many.

The suppression of the ridge will allow a weak 'cool' front to push
across the Lower Great Lakes late Monday and Monday night. This
front and a weakening of the mid level cap (cooling at H7) could
lead to a few thunderstorms...although the majority of the region
could remain pcpn free. Otherwise it will rather sultry across the
region on Monday with H85 temps ahead of the front remaining in the
lower 20s c. Max temps for most areas away from the lakes will be in
the lower 90s...so the region will once again likely experience
widespread heat advisory conditions.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Temperatures will remain well above normal during this period. In
fact...there is HIGH confidence that they will staunchly hold some
10 degrees above climatology into the following weekend.

The front that will essentially fall apart while pushing through our
region Monday night will stall in the vicinity of Pennsylvania late
Monday night and Tuesday and remain there through Wednesday.
Meanwhile...the west to east elongated H5 ridge will reamplify over
the Upper Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Given the proximity of the
old sfc boundary...will maintain low chc pops for mainly afternoon
thunderstorms over southern sections. Since there will not really be
an airmass change over our region...the sultry conditions will
continue. H85 temps will hold in the lower 20s with dew points near
70. This combination could very well mean the continuation of heat
advisories...at least for parts of the region...through the period.

By Thursday...the mid levels will warm and heights will rise enough
to only use slgt chc pops for any afternoon driven convection.
This should encourage a day of fair weather...although temps and
humidity levels will remain at sultry levels with apparent temps in
the mid 90s.

Looking further out through the end of next week...all of the GEFS
and ECMWF ensembles are in agreement that the heart of the >595dm
ridge will retrograde to the nations mid section. The expansiveness
of the ridge though will include all of the Great lakes...so there
will be no relief from the tropical conditions. There is high
confidence that H85 temps will be locked in the lower 20s during the
second half of the week with equally high dew points. If you like
the heat and humidity...you will be in your glory for the next 10
days to two weeks.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Some patchy fog formation is expected early this morning, especially
