What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Burlington, VT wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Mar 6, 1:08 AM EST, 2 hours 16 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Mar 6, 1:08 AM EST, 2 hours 16 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
108 AM EST Tue Mar 6 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
Dry weather is then expected through Tuesday with weak high
pressure building in across New York and New England. Low
stratus will be slow to depart. Tuesday will be partly to mostly
sunny with high temperatures generally in the 30s to around 40.
The next chance for precipitation arrives late Wednesday or
Wednesday nigh as a strong low pressure system develops off the
New Jersey coast before tracking into the Gulf of Maine
Thursday morning. Moderate to heavy snow accumulations are
possible, especially across central and eastern Vermont, and
portions of the Adirondacks.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON/...
As of 637 PM EST Monday...Evening forecast is in generally good
shape, but did opt to increase sky cover through the night
based on current satellite trends and model soundings indicating
the subsidence inversion being slow to break. No other changed
made at this time.

Previous Discussion...Fairly benign weather will persist
across the North Country through the early part of this week as
we'll remain in between one low departing into the Atlantic and
another approaching from the Midwest. Clouds will dissipate
overnight with ridging briefly building across the region. Hence
expect we'll see sunshine Tuesday, especially in the afternoon.
However, cloud cover will increase once again Tuesday night
ahead of the aforementioned Midwest low. Moisture will begin to
spread northward as south flow develops out ahead of this
system, and some light snow will be possible late Tuesday night
across the Adirondacks down to the southern Greens. Little to no
snow accumulation is expected. Temperatures will remain above
normal through the period, with highs in the mid 30s to around
40 and overnight lows in the 20s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /2 PM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 253 PM EST Monday...The next storm system begins to
impact the North Country on Wednesday. A decaying low pressure
system over the Ohio River Valley will spawn a triple point low
that will quickly translate into the western Atlantic Wednesday
morning where it will rapidly intensify. As this low tracks
northeastward and intensifies, snowfall will begin to develop
across the North Country from south to north. Models have
actually been in overall great agreement with placement and
timing of this low pressure system over the past 3-4 model
cycles which gives above normal confidence with the current
forecast. That being said, there are still a lot of finer
details to work out in subsequent model runs with one of the
biggest challenges once again being temperatures.

Based on past events, it looks like model temperatures are once
again too warm. Some dry air in the lowest levels will allow some
wet-bulbing (dynamic cooling) to occur during the onset of snowfall
on Wednesday. In addition, the initial upper level jet associated
with the decaying low pressure system has much of Vermont in the
left exit region of the jet. This could provide enough lift to
squeak out some light snow or flurries early Wednesday which would
limit insolation and dynamically cool the atmosphere prior to the
onset of snowfall. All precipitation is expected to stay as snow but
the temperature challenge impacts the snow to liquid ratio which
will also impact total snow amounts.

That being said, snowfall will begin across southern Vermont
Wednesday morning and spread northward into central and northern
Vermont as well as northern New York during the mid to late
afternoon hours. The highest snow snow amounts will likely be seen
across southern and eastern Vermont with the greatest 700 mb
frontogenesis being observed there due to the close proximity to the
low pressure system. Snowfall amounts will taper off the further
north and west you go but it looks like much of the North Country
will see 4 to 6 inches of snowfall with parts of southern and
eastern Vermont potentially seeing 8 to 12 inches.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 253 PM EST Monday...Although the surface low pressure
system moves inland over Maine Thursday afternoon, snowfall is
expected to linger through Saturday, especially at higher
terrain. Once the low moves inland over Maine, it retrogrades
back toward Vermont which allows colder air to filter in aloft
while increasing upper level support. This will create several
more inches of snow through the first half of the weekend across
the North Country but the main impacts will be felt toward the
higher peaks of the Green Mountains like Jay Peak and Killington
where quite a bit more snowfall is possible with upslope flow.
Snowfall will taper off on Sunday as the low pressure system
fizzles out and weak shortwave ridging is expecting to build
across the region. Heading into Monday, the weak shortwave ridge
is expected to shift eastward and a return of northwesterly
flow aloft may usher in a disturbance or two which may result in
scattered snow showers.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Through 06Z Wednesday...VFR expected through the taf period as
the current ceiling around 4-5kft will slowly erode through
the overnight hours scattering out between 13-15z Tuesday.
Generally light winds out of the north to northeast through
overnight hours becoming more easterly through the period with
some overnight gap flow at RUT expected out of the southeast.
