.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure will bring mostly clear skies for a brief
period through this evening. A weak upper level disturbance
will result in increasing cloudiness overnight, and scattered
snow showers, which will be most numerous across the
Adirondacks and the northern mountains of Vermont late tonight
into Tuesday. After a brief break, a stronger, more moisture
laden low pressure system will bring widespread plowable snow
during a 6 to 12 hour period Wednesday into Wednesday night.
Travel conditions could be particularly affected during the
evening commute time frame on Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1228 AM EST Tuesday...Tweaked sky cover and temperatures a
bit for this update. Approaching cloud cover/WAA from the
southwest is a touch slower reaching Vermont, so have updated
sky grids to reflect this based on satellite trends. The
slightly slower approach of the cloud cover is allowing for a
couple of additional hours of radiational cooling east of the
Greens, so have lowered temperatures in this region for the next
couple of hours until the cloud cover moves in.

Prior discussion... Surface ridge axis extending from the Ohio
Valley newd into wrn NY will build ewd across the North Country
this evening. Mostly clear skies and NW winds are in place this
afternoon, but that will be short-lived as winds back W-SW
overnight and low-level moisture from the ern Great Lakes begins
to advect newd into nrn NY. Upslope conditions into the nrn
Adirondacks will enhance potential low cloud cover there
overnight. Meanwhile, weak clipper system across the upr MS
river valley will bring increase mid-upper level cloudiness
areawide during the overnight hrs. As a result, best radiational
cooling will be early tonight before onset of BKN- OVC
conditions especially after 04Z or so. Looking for lows in the
single digits to around 10F in the Champlain Valley before
temperatures level off during the pre-dawn period. In terms of
precipitation, should start to see some scattered snow shower
activity owing to increasing cyclonic flow and lake enhanced
moisture after 06Z across St. Lawrence and Franklin counties,
where localized snow accumulations of 1-2" are possible. Some
isold light snow showers are also possible ewd into the northern
Greens with a coating to an inch across the nrn summits. Very
low boundary layer dewpoints result in just a few flurries
possible across the Champlain Valley during the pre- dawn hours.

Weakly cyclonic mid-level flow remains in place into the day
Tuesday, and combined with weak surface based instability and
flow from Lake Ontario will continue to generate a few snow
showers, primarily across nrn NY and far n-central into nern VT.
Appears better mid-level moisture shifts to the east of the
region after 18Z or so, so indicated some diminishing PoPs
during the mid-late afternoon period. Could see an additional
1" or so across the northern Adirondacks and far n-central VT
during the first half of Tuesday. Winds shift S-SW Tuesday.
Despite variably cloud cover, should see temperatures moderate a

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 233 PM EST Monday...Still expecting a widespread
accumulating snowfall with up to 1"/hr snowfall rates Noon-9PM
Wednesday. Heaviest accumulations expected across
central/s-central VT with combination of best low-level
WAA/frontogenesis, and excellent juxtaposition of strong UVV
with deep saturated dendrite growth layer per 12Z NAM soundings.
Snowfall amts expected to range from 6-10" for
central/s-central VT, and 5-8" for the Champlain Valley,
Adirondacks, and n-central VT. Have issued a Winter Storm Watch
13Z Wed thru 06Z Thu in the above mentioned areas. Appears the
St. Lawrence Valley is a bit more on the nwrn fridge as sfc low
tracks from NJ across srn New England Wednesday afternoon. Thus,
snow amounts will likely be slightly less (3-6") in the St.
Lawrence Valley (SLV). May eventually need a Winter Weather
Advisory in the SLV as we get closer to the event. With good
dendrite growth and temps generally in the mid-upr 20s, Snow-
to-liquid ratios generally expected 13:1-18:1. Thus, thinking
this event will mainly be associated with impacts to travel
owing to low visibility (<1/4SM at times) and snow covered
roadways. Shouldn't see any impacts to power/utilities with
relatively low snow density and wind speeds mainly around 10 mph
during the event. With a period of sely 925mb winds into the
srn Greens, may see some localized totals up to 12" in wrn
Windsor County/Ludlow, VT area with upslope enhancement. That
will be something to monitor as the event approaches.

System is quick moving with absence of a closed wave aloft,
thus the period of best accumulating snow likely 8-12hrs at
most. Open wave will also limit potential for
orographic/wraparound snow with snowfall tapering off rather
quickly during the pre- dawn hrs Thursday. Biggest impact
expected during the Wed Eve commute when snow rates appear
heaviest based on current expectations.

Colder air arrives by 12z Thurs with lows Wednesday night mainly
in the single digits to low-mid teens (coldest across nrn NY).

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 355 PM EST Monday...The long term starts out with a broad
trof over the conus with the short wave associated with the Wed
storm moving out of our region. The flow aloft will trend more
southwesterly and heights rise as a ridge builds off the
southeast us coast by the weekend.

On Thursday a northwest upslope flow make keep a snow shower or
flurry going in the mountains early, but things dry out pretty
fast. With cold advection not expecting temperatures to rise
much with highs in the teens to lower 20s.

On Friday high pressure moves off the mid-atlantic coast and
weak warm advection begins bringing more clouds and a chance of
snow showers ahead of a weak cold front moving down from the
north.

Weak high pressure is over the region Friday night into Saturday
so it should be mostly dry.

The next weather maker will move into the area Saturday night
into Sunday night. Models all agree some precipitation is headed
our way but differ on thermal profiles and low tracks so for now
have gone with a blend which shows mainly a rain or snow type
scenario. ECMWF shows a warm solution while GFS a more mixed
scenario.

By Monday drier and colder weather is forecast as high pressure
moves back into the area.

Have stayed close to a blend for both temps and pops...with highs
mid 20s to mid 30s and lows mid teens to lower 20s.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Through 06Z Wednesday...Current radar and obs show light snow
over slk/mss with ifr vis, while rest of our taf sites are
experiencing vfr conditions. The combination of weak short wave
energy and mid level moisture, along with favorable southwest
trajectory off lake ontario is helping to enhance moisture/snow
across our western taf sites. Expecting periods of ifr vis in
light snow thru 12z this morning at mss/slk, with vfr trending
toward mvfr at mpv by 09z...perhaps ifr by 12z in light snow.
Meanwhile...pbg/btv and rut remain mainly vfr with perhaps a
period of mvfr vis in light snow between 10z-14z this morning.
Winds generally southwest at 4 to 8 knots with a some higher
gusts possible btwn 15z-20z today.

Outlook...

Wednesday: Mainly MVFR and IFR, with areas VFR possible. Definite
SN.
Wednesday Night: Mainly MVFR and IFR, with areas VFR possible.
Likely SN, Slight chance SHSN.
Thursday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
