.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the North Country will keep the area dry
overnight. A warm front will move up into the region on Tuesday
and bring rain Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. A cold
front will move into the region on Wednesday and make for an
active period of weather with showers ahead of the front and
rather gusty winds behind the front late Wednesday into
Wednesday night. High pressure builds in for Thursday and we
will return to dry weather...but temperatures will be well below
normal.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 10 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1241 AM EDT Tuesday...Going forecast in real good shape
with just some increasing high clouds moving east across the
area early this morning and temperatures not dropping off too
much. No precipitation is expected and it looks now like the
better chances for precipitation may not come until Tuesday
afternoon.

Previous discussion below:
High pressure building over the area will keep the North
Country dry overnight. High clouds will move in during the night
time hours ahead of a warm front approaching from the south.
The increased cloud cover and warm air advection overnight will
supply nighttime lows in the 20s to low 30s...a few degrees
warmer than the previous night.

.SHORT TERM /10 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 420 PM EDT Monday...A high wind watch has been issued for
Saint Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, and Essex Counties of New
York along with Windsor County, Vermont, for Wednesday afternoon
through early Thursday morning....

Tuesday morning, a low will form in the lee of the Colorado
Rockies and weaken slightly as it moves to the Mid West. At this
point, the low will encounter better dynamics as it moves into
an area of deep ascent ahead of a digging shortwave and the left
exit region of a strengthening upper jet streak. With the
center of the low over Michigan Tuesday, the system will push a
warm front northward through New England. Temperatures Tuesday
will not follow a typical diurnal trend; temperatures will rise
through the morning as high clouds build in ahead of the system,
then peak in the 40s around noon. At this point, clouds will
rapidly thicken and lower and temperatures will start to cool
slightly through late afternoon as precipitation begins. There
is some model discrepancy as to the exact timing of the warm
frontal passage, but looks like this will generally occur during
the evening hours of Tuesday. Increasing isentropic ascent
ahead of the front will result in rain spreading from southwest
to northeast across the forecast area, beginning during the day
Tuesday and increasing in intensity overnight. Some areas of the
northern Adirondacks, the Greens, and eastern Vermont could see
some snow mixed in with the rain Tuesday night. At this point,
forecast soundings show temperatures profiles that are fairly
isothermal in the lower levels, so mixed precipitation doesn't
look to be much of a concern with this event. Will continue to
monitor for the potential, but for now expecting more of a
rain/snow mix.

Expect temperatures to rise Tuesday night through Wednesday
morning and top out in the upper 40s to low 50s late Wednesday
morning. Once we become fully established in the warm sector of
the cyclone overnight, any remaining snow will fully transition
to rain. Initially, the heaviest stratiform rain will fall over
the Saint Lawrence Valley/northern New York Tuesday night as
convergence is enhanced along a trough of low pressure. By
Wednesday morning, cold air will start to move in aloft ahead of
the approaching cold front, increasing the low level
instability. We could see a hear a few rumbles of thunder as the
front pushes through Wednesday along with a heavier band of
convective rain.

Wednesday afternoon, the cyclone's cold front will move
through, followed by a period of strong winds and a long
duration downward fall of temperatures. The track and the
evolution of the low, (strengthening as it tracks northeastward
through the Saint Lawrence Valley), is conducive to strong winds
at the surface as the intruding air mass is able to effectively
mix down high momentum air from 800 mb to 850 mb. The position
of the dry slot wrapping around the cyclone and northward into
northern New York is also highly favorable for effective mixing
and strong winds. In addition to the deep mixed layer, the area
will experience an isallobaric push as the low rapidly
strengthens to near 980 mb as it moves up the Saint Lawrence
Valley. All said and done, expect gusts in excess of 50 mph in
Northern New York and in Windsor County of Vermont.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 347 AM EDT Monday...Active weather continues into the
extended period of the forecast with a broad upper trough
persisting over the northern CONUS. Surface high pressure takes
control for Thursday, the calm between two storms, before a
sharp shortwave trough dropping out the Canadian Prairies
develops surface low pressure over the Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley which will track northeast across the BTV CWA on Friday.
Forecast soundings support precipitation starting as widespread
snow early Friday morning, but as the boundary layer warms above
freezing by mid-morning, snow levels will rise above 1500 feet
with all rain at the valley floor. Rain and snow continues into
Friday night before the surface low races off into the Gulf of
Maine by Saturday morning with the potential for up to 6" of
accumulation across the higher peaks. Scattered snow showers
will be around for Saturday as the upper trough swings through,
with high pressure returns for Sunday and Monday.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Through 06Z Wednesday...VFR conditions will prevail until about
20Z to 22Z when ceilings will lower to 2000 ft to 3000 ft.
Steady rainfall with visibilities between 3 and 4 miles will
move into northern New York by 22Z and quickly spread eastward
to the Vermont TAF sites. Ceilings will continue to steadily
drop as southwest flow aloft continues to usher in more and more
moisture. KMSS will likely go IFR by 03Z on Wednesday with KSLK
likely not too far behind. In addition, a strong low level jet
will begin to move across the North Country late tonight. This
will likely cause some wind shear as winds will remain 15 kt or
less at the surface with winds at 2000 ft around 40 kts.
