After six days of cold weather, some moderation is expected
today. After that, a significant winter storm will bring heavy
snow, strong to damaging winds and coastal flooding Thursday
into Thursday night. Exact snow amounts and precise location of
the rain-snow line will be dependent on how close the storm
tracks to New England. Another blast of arctic air will follow
for Friday and the weekend. Another storm may affect us early
next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
High pressure over the region will shift offshore, but bring
dry weather to Southern New England. Surface winds will shift
out of the south this afternoon and evening, while winds aloft
will shift out of the southwest. Expect moderation with temps
climbing into the 20s. South Coastal areas may approach
freezing.

Pattern Overview and Model Preferences...
All 12z guidance has trended farther west/closer to the coast and
more intense with the mid level low and surface circulation Thu/Thu
night. Global guidance including the 12z EC and 12z UKMET both have
system under going bombogenesis with sub 960 mb low tracking
southeast of the 40N/70W benchmark and then into the Gulf of ME Thu
aftn/evening. The Hi Res guidance is most bullish and may be
suffering some convective feedback issues including the 12z NAM.
This is apparent in how short the mid level trough/ridge half
wavelength becomes. Thus could see different trends evolve with
later model runs. The 12z GFS is on the eastern edge of the
guidance envelope with the 12z EC/UKMET a nice compromise in
between the 12z NAM and 12z GFS. This is also very close to 12z
WPC qpf. Thus given we are outside of 24-36 hrs will lean away
from the Hi Res guidance and closely follow a blend of 12z
EC/UKMET/WPC model fields for this portion of the forecast.
Plenty of moisture (sub-tropical moisture) available with this
system as cyclogenesis origins near the Bahamas Wed morning.
Strong to Damaging Winds...
While the heavy snow will likely steal most of the headlines we are
very concerned regarding the threat for strong to damaging winds
Thu/Thu night as system intensifies rapidly. All models including
global guidance have a sub 960 mb low tracking southeast of
Nantucket and Cape Cod Thu afternoon and evening. While the 12z NAM
wind fields are most robust even the 12z EC has a 60-65 kt low level
northerly jet over Cape Cod and Islands Thu afternoon. This combined
with steepening low level lapse rates as winds shift to the NW late
Thu/Thu night combined with strong pres/rise couplet, risk for 60+
mph wind gusts across Cape Cod, Islands and possibly Cape Ann. This
is where our forecast confidence is highest for strong to damaging
winds. In addition, farther west into interior southeast MA the rain-
snow line will be accompanied by heavy wet snow, thus
increasing the risk for down tree limbs and isolated power
outages. Therefore have hoisted a High Wind Watch for southeast
MA including Cape Cod, the islands and Cape Ann. We did extend
the High Wind Watch farther west into RI and eastern MA to
account for a possible continued westward trend in later model
runs. Any power outages will become problematic as bitterly cold
air overspreads the region Thu night in the wake of the
departing Nor'easter.
Heavy Snow and Ptypes...
As mentioned above all 12z guidance (global and Hi Res) has trended
westward with heavy qpf back into eastern CT/RI/Worcester Hills and
northeast MA. This westward trend seems reasonable given the high
amplitude pattern, negative tilt long wave trough and track of mid
level low over the Gulf Stream. Also another contributing factor
could be convection/latent heat release building a stronger
downstream ridge yielding a track closer to the coast. So given
recent model trends in both global and Hi Res guidance and pattern
recognition, trended upward with snow totals. Still 2 days away so
our preliminary snow totals are for 6-12" across much of eastern MA,
6-8" across much of RI into central MA and eastern CT, with 3-6" for
much of CT and western MA. Away from the rain-snow line snow ratios
will be greater than 10-1 as some of the model guidance suggest good
snow growth with strong omega in the snow growth region. Where
exactly that occurs is just too early to say given typical model
error at this time range (48-60 hrs) is 50-75 miles.
A model blend at this point suggest the rain-snow line traverses
into Plymouth and Bristol counties of southeast MA for a time
and will be accompanied by a sharp coastal front given very cold
air initially over land and strong pres falls offshore. So
preliminary snow totals for this region is 4-8" for the upper
Cape and Marthas Vineyard and 2-4" for the remainder of the Cape
and Nantucket where ptype issues will limit snowfall. Again
given the storm is still 2 days away expect adjustments to snow
totals with later forecasts.
Nonetheless, there will be about a 6 hr window of very heavy
snowfall from about 10 am to 4 pm when snowfall rates of at least an
inch or two per hour are likely, possibly higher pending instability
aloft colocated with good snow growth/ratios. This snowfall
intensity combined with strong NNE winds will result in a period of
near blizzard conditions across eastern MA, possibly into RI. Travel
will become difficult during this time and likely impact both the
morning and late day commutes.
Flash Freeze Potential...
Other issue will be mixed precip falling across Cape Cod, the
islands and possibly westward into interior southeast MA Thu. As
winds shift to the NW late Thu/Thu evening, the coastal front will
come crashing southeast toward the coastline with subfreezing temps

Winter Storm Watches expanded westward into the central MA including
the Worcester Hills and eastern CT. High Wind Watch hoisted for all
of RI and eastern MA. Coastal Flood Watch for the entire eastern MA
coastline for the midday tide cycle.
Uncertainty....
As mentioned above this storm is still 2 days away and the
average model error at this time range is 50-75 miles. Thus
this applies to the axis of heaviest snow and the location of
the rain-snow line. Hence adjustments in later forecasts are
expected. Will models continue to trend westward in later runs?
Given the amplitude of the long wave pattern, system developing
over the Gulf Stream and convection possibly building the
downstream ridge more than models are simulating all suggest an
eastward trend is unlikely with some additional westward
adjustment possible. We've been told recon flights will collect
data shortly and this will likely help improve model
performance.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Big Picture...
Longwave pattern maintains a ridge over the Pacific Coast and a
trough over the Northeast USA through Saturday. The pattern briefly
flattens, then reestablishes ridge-west/trough-east early next week.
Shortwave scale shows a broad upper trough over the Eastern USA with
closed low over NY and New England. It also shows a ridge over the
Western USA. Shortwave over the Gulf of Alaska slams into the ridge,
then works inland. Some of this energy enters the southern stream
and moves over the Plains Sunday night. Remaining energy merges in
Western Canada with a shortwave diving south from the Arctic. Both
streams merge early next week with potential for stormy weather.
This suggests another period of cold air Friday through Sunday, with
temperatures modifying toward normal early next week. Another storm
system arrives early next week.
Details...
Friday-Saturday-Sunday...
Upper low settles over New England with 500 mb temps falling to
around -40C and height contours well below normal. The upper low
lingers Saturday, then pulls out to the east Saturday night leaving
a flatter flow over our area. A weak shortwave moves through that
flow on Sunday.
The cold advection mixed layer should have winds to at least 35
knots and possibly 40 knots. So expect windy conditions Friday and
Saturday. Winds should then diminish Saturday night as high pressure
builds overhead. Wind chills will be below zero everywhere and near
-15C in places later Friday and Friday night. At a minimum, we
expect a wind chill headline will be needed. A wind advisory
may also be needed during this time.
Expect dry and cold weather Friday and Saturday. Temps aloft will
drop to an 850 mb equiv of -25C to -30C, so max sfc temps will be in
the single numbers and teens, nighttime min temps in the single
numbers below zero Friday night and zero to 15 below on Saturday
night.
With the upper trough and cold pool departing Sunday and high
pressure moving offshore by afternoon, expect lingering cold temps
but they will be a more moderate cold.
Monday-Tuesday...
The approach of the western shortwaves will mean a chance at another
round of stormy weather. Models all show a storm, but disagree on
location as well as upper flow. This opens the door for uncertainty
in precip type. With limited confidence, we will go with chance pops
for rain/snow/mixed at this time.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
4 PM update...
A robust coastal storm combined with high astronomical tides
will set the stage for potential coastal flooding for the
Thursday midday/early afternoon high tide. At this time, we see
a potential for moderate impacts and have issued a Coastal Flood
Watch for east coastal Massachusetts. The astronomical high
tide on Thursday will be 12.1 feet MLLW at 12:36 PM in Boston
and 4.2 feet MLLW at 1:42 PM in Nantucket. At the time of high
tide, we anticipate the storm surge to be 1.5 to 2 feet north of
Boston and around 2 feet south of Boston. By that time, we
believe waves will have built to around 15 feet in Massachusetts
Bay and 15 to 20 feet east of Cape Cod and east of Nantucket.
The surge will continue to increase to between 2 and 3 feet
later in the afternoon after the high tide. Waves will likely
increase to near 20 feet just offshore toward evening. There may
be some minor impacts lingering along Cape Cod Bay and
Nantucket for the Thursday night high tide.
We anticipate the combination of a very high astronomical high tide
with a fairly significant storm surge and wave action to produce
widespread minor to moderate impacts from Boston north and moderate
impacts for east and north facing coastlines to the south of Boston.
At this time the potential exists for fairly widespread flooding of
vulnerable shore roads and basements. Waves on top of the high water
level may cause some damage to beach access stairs, docks, decks,
beach parking lots and any other particularly vulnerable structures
along or close to the surf zone. Sea ice in some locations, such as
but not limited to Cape Bay, may exacerbate damage to some
structures near the surf zone. The fact that this storm is likely to
be relatively fast moving, in spite of its intensity, should temper
some the storm surge and wave action compared with historical events
of longer duration.
