.SYNOPSIS...
Cooler than normal, but mainly dry conditions continue into
Friday. A significant coastal storm will impact the region
Saturday with heavy rainfall, strong coastal winds and minor
coastal flooding. Unsettled weather pattern lingers into early
next week with best chance of additional rainfall on Monday as
another low pressure affects the region. High pressure builds in
from the west Tuesday and Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1015 AM Update...

Satellite shows the last of a mid level cloud deck over R.I.
eroding along with the strato-cu deck over the Berkshires.
Forecast is on track with temps currently in the low to mid 40s
across the region on thier way only to upper 40s this afternoon
under a cold northwest wind.

Previous Discussion...

Area of strato-cu across western New Eng will gradually erode
this morning, otherwise lots of sunshine today with a few cirrus
assocd with upper level jet overhead.

Chilly start to the morning, and temps will average about 10+
degrees below normal with highs ranging from lower 40s interior
high terrain to upper 40s to near 50 in the coastal plain. Still
a decent gradient across New Eng which will support NW wind
gusts to 20-25 mph at times today.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Tonight...
Coldest night of the week expected as high pres crests across
the region during the morning hours. The resulting clear skies
and weak pres gradient should allow for more widespread
radiational cooling processes than this past night. Afternoon
dwpts will drop into the low-mid 20s. Therefore, plenty of room
for early decoupling. Mins are likely to fall into the 20s and
low 30s themselves yielding another hard freeze for many.
However, growing season is already deemed over for S New
England.

Fri...
High pres shifts SE early Fri, allowing for winds to continue
the slow backing toward the W by late evening. Very weak warm
advection, combined with a modest downslope component with W
winds will yield higher temps on Fri than previous days, but
still generally below normal thanks to core of upper cold pool 2
std deviations below normal. Looking at highs in the low 50s,
also limited by increasing afternoon clouds.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Heavy rain and strong coastal wind Saturday
* Just a few showers possible Sunday, otherwise mainly dry
* Showers more likely Monday, then mainly dry Tue/Wed

Friday night into Saturday night...

Models are fairly consistent with coastal low track tucked close to
the mid Atlc coast into Sat. This is an all rain event for SNE, with
possible exception of a brief shot snow/mix at the onset across the
Berkshires late Fri night/early Sat.

Rain moves north into SNE late Fri night with a period of heavy
rainfall focused mainly during Saturday assocd with strong forcing
for ascent at the nose of easterly low level jet which is 3-4SD
above normal. Additional synoptic scale lift from coupled upper
level jet structure. Deterministic GFS QPF is a wet outlier compared
to all GEFS members. Consensus of deterministic and ensemble
guidance suggests 1-2 inches rainfall with heaviest across SE New
Eng where locally higher amounts possible. These rainfall amounts
not enough for river flooding, but some nuisance urban and poor
drainage flooding is possible in the typically vulnerable locations
in eastern New Eng. The good news is that axis of heavy rainfall
appears to be progressive as it lifts north across SNE with models
hinting at a dry slot moving up from the south during mid/late
afternoon. There is some instability that develops near the south
coast late Sat/Sat evening as higher theta-e air moves up from the
south so will have to watch for possible convection developing in
the dry slot across SE New Eng. Warm sector airmass may get into SE
New Eng later Sat with winds shifting to the south and temps
possibly getting into the lower 60s Cape/Islands while temps hold
near 40 across NW MA.

Wind...
Strong coastal wind remains the likely biggest impact from this
storm as 60 kt low level jet lifts NE across SE New Eng during Sat.
Still some uncertainty with the timing/positioning of the low level
jet but potential for at least wind advisory gusts along the coast
as soundings indicate shallow boundary layer mixing. Strongest winds
will likely affect the Cape/Islands where a 3-6 hr period of 50-60
mph gusts possible. The strong wind will be capable of tree damage
and scattered power outages.

Coastal flooding...
It appears the Saturday afternoon high tide is most vulnerable for
areas of minor flooding for east coastal MA. The astronomical tide
at Boston is 11.1 feet. Timing of low level jet will likely be close
to the time of high tide with seas ramping up quickly through the
morning and into the early afternoon. A storm surge up to 1.5 ft is
likely combined with 10-15 ft seas is expected to produce areas of
solid minor coastal flooding along the east coast with areas from
coastal Plymouth county to the north shore most vulnerable.

Not expecting much if any coastal flooding risk for the late
Saturday night high tide due to a lower astronomical tide and less
surge and much less wind.

Sunday and Monday...

High amplitude longwave trough remains to the west with series of
shortwaves rotating through the flow. It appears that Sunday may be
mostly dry between shortwaves with dry slot overhead and low pres to
the north with SW flow. Still can't rule out a few showers,
especially northern and western MA but most of the area should be
dry. Increasing risk of rain on Monday as next shortwave approaches
with another coastal low possibly affecting the region.

Tuesday and Wednesday...

Mid level trough axis is moving through New Eng Tue which may lead
to a few showers but mainly dry weather for most of the area.
Wednesday looks to be the nicer day with more sunshine as high pres
moves into the region.

A significant coastal storm will bring heavy rainfall and strong
winds along the coast on Saturday. Wind headlines will likely be
needed for portions of the coast, especially the Cape and Islands.
In addition, minor coastal flooding is possible along the east coast
of Massachusetts during the Saturday afternoon high tide cycle.
