.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure offshore maintains one more day of fair and
seasonable weather. Low pressure from the Great Lakes will swing
a cold front through New England Thursday. this will bring
showers and a few thunderstorms late tonight and Thursday with
the potential for locally heavy rainfall. High pressure then
builds north with increasing heat and humidity for the weekend
and early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...

High pressure offshore brings a southerly flow with increasing
humidity. Meanwhile cirrus clouds will thicken through the day.
Expect the most sunshine this morning, then filtered sunshine
during the afternoon. Temps at 850 mb are forecast around
10-12C, but some indicators that mixing will not reach that
high. If it does, expect max temps around 80 away from the South
Coast. If mixing stops around 900 mb, expect max temps in the
mid 70s.

Winds increase late morning and afternoon, with speeds in the
mixed layer reaching 20-25 mph. This means south-southwest gusts
near that range midday and afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...

Tonight...

Clouds will continue to lower and thicken tonight. Meanwhile the
southerly flow will bring higher dew points into Southern New
England with values reaching the low to mid 60s. This will serve
as a lower bound for min temps during the night.

Otherwise the main concern will be onset of showers ahead of the
approaching weather system from the Great Lakes. Model consensus
brings leading edge of showers to the Berkshires toward 8 PM,
spreading to eastern Mass by midnight. On the other hand, low
level moisture inflow at 8 pm is directed toward NY State and
may favor a slower entrance into Southern New England. Also,
these will be showers rather than a rain shield...the reduced
areal coverage may also favor a later start time here. We will
bring chance pops to our western areas around 00Z with likely
pops arriving closer to midnight. The higher values reach
Eastern Mass after 06Z. Convective parameters are unfavorable
most of the night, but edge favorable in Western Mass and
adjacent CT 09-12Z. Expect mainly showers during the late night.

Thursday...

Great Lakes low pressure passes to our north, swinging a cold
front through during the afternoon. Mid level lapse rates remain
less than 6C/Km but the GFS and NAM show 6-7C/Km low level lapse
rates. SBCAPE values are forecast to climb to 1000-2000 J/Kg.
Lifted Indices are sub-zero much of the day in the West and by
afternoon in the East. A theta-e ridge builds up from Southern
NY across CT and Western Mass. Meanwhile, Precipitable Water
values climb to around 2 inches, well above normal. We also note
a strong low level southerly jet which strengthens through the
day. Speeds start the morning around 35-40 knots and then builds
to 40-50 knots by the time it moves east of Mass. The two WRF
models show 0-1Km Helicity at 300-500, but early in the day and
well ahead of the best instability.

Expect showers and scattered thunderstorms during the day. The
high PW values bring a concern for locally heavy downpours that
could bring urban/poor drainage flooding. If low level winds
reach the upper end of the forecast, thunderstorms may generate
some straight-line wind damage. If the low level helicity phases
better with the expected convection, we may need to monitor for
low level rotation, but that is the lowest likelihood at this
time.

Overview...
Modest blocking SE of Newfoundland allows the incoming wave Thu
to gradually open, yielding to the confluence just downstream.
However, this wave is associated with a subtropical moisture
stream. Parent low pres slides through N New England, dragging a
robust cold front through the area. There remain some timing
differences, based on how quickly the wave opens. Feel a split
between operational ECMWF and GFS is about right, as this takes
into account the slower and faster guidance with QPF
respectively. Following this wave passage, S stream dominates,
with building ridge through early next week thanks to a
deepening and digging trof forming W of the Continental Divide.
H5 heights reach +595dm. This continues to suggest influx of
heat into New England, which could be matched by high dwpts as
the core of the airmass shifts in over the weekend. As previous
forecaster noted, will potentially need heat headlines.

Fri...
Building ridge and attendant high pres begin to impact the
region Fri. H85 temps top out around +16C, which with some
downslope flow should allow highs to reach the upper 80s and
around 90 in spots across the interior. Flow looks weak enough
to support sea breezes along the shorelines. Humid, but not
enough to warrant heat headlines as dwpts will rise into the
low-mid 60s, not enough to yield heat indices above 100.

Sat and Sun...
Warmest days as H85 temps reach +20C, which is near record
territory for late July per SPC sounding climatology at CHH.
While still hot, dewpoints are not progged to be as high each
day as previous runs earlier in the week suggested. Still, with
dwpts in the mid 60s, and ambient temperatures in the mid and
potentially upper 90s in spots, heat headlines may well be
needed. Sat, gradient weak enough to keep near shore locations
under the influence of sea breezes. However, with a
strengthening SW gradient Sun, east coast sea breeze may be
limited. Overall, still not comfortable, but conditions not
looking quite as extreme as they were earlier in the week when
there was a risk for dwpts exceeding 70F.

Early next work week...
Some improvement early as marine flow limits daytime heating
Mon thanks to strong return flow. An approaching front Tue,
although timing uncertain, suggests a return for unsettled
conditions with potential storms. Timing will dictate.

20-25 knots during the night and 25-30 knots Thursday. This
should be enough to bring seas of 5-6 feet tonight and 5-8 feet
on Thursday. Rough seas will primarily be on the outer waters,
but also on the exposed waters closer to shore such as RI and
BID Sounds. A Small Craft Advisory has been issued for most of
the waters for tonight and Thursday.
