What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Boston/Norton, MA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Jun 2, 3:21 AM EDT, 15 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 2, 3:21 AM EDT, 15 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA
321 AM EDT Sat Jun 2 2018

.SYNOPSIS...

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected this
afternoon and early evening with a cold frontal passage...but a
washout is not expected. Much drier and cooler weather returns
overnight and Sunday. Unsettled conditions and unseasonably cool
temperatures will linger through much of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

315 am update...

* Dense fog near the south coast burns off later this morning
* Sct afternoon showers/iso t-storms w/localized heavy rain

Main issue early this morning revolves around dense fog. While
patchy dense fog covered portions of southern New England...the
widespread dense fog was confined to the south coast, Cape, and
Islands. We should see this fog burn off by early-mid morning
in most locations as an initial cold front crosses the region.
The current dense fog advisory for the south coast runs through
10 am...but fog may scour out a bit earlier given the expected
wind shift so later shifts may be able to cancel it earlier.

Dry weather should dominate most of this morning, other than a
spot shower or two. Given the very mild start and that we
expect at least some peeks of sunshine...expect highs to
reach into the upper 70s to lower 80s in many locations...with
some middle 80s in the CT River Valley. At the same time...a
secondary cold backdoor cold front very late this morning and
especially this afternoon will provide a focus for scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms. Main area of concern for
convection is inland from the eastern MA coast with potential
increasing further south and west where instability will be higher.
Dewpoints still in the 60s will result in the potential for
localized heavy rain/street flooding with any strong thunderstorms
since storm movement will be slow.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...

Tonight...

Left over scattered showers/isolated thunderstorms will
diminish early this evening from the northeast as drier/more
stable air works in behind the backdoor cold front. Overnight
lows should generally drop into the 50 to 55 degree range as
much drier low level air works into the region.

Sunday...

Plenty of sunshine anticipated with high pressure nosing down
from the Canadian Maritimes. However...brisk onshore flow will
keep temperatures mainly in the upper 50s to lower 60s along the
immediate eastern MA coast the entire day. The rest of the
region will see highs in the upper 60s to the lower 70s with
perhaps some middle 70s in the lower CT River Valley.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Highlights...

* Significant mid level pattern change next week will bring
below normal temperatures and periods of unsettled weather
through at least the middle of next week

Overview...

01/12Z guidance suite did not show major changes to the expected
pattern through much of next week. It still appears southern New
England will be in the vicinity of a mid level trough, and
corresponding below normal temperatures into the middle of next
week. High temperatures should be more below normal than the low
temperatures. The mid level pattern should become more zonal
towards the end of next week.

While this mid level trough is in place, cannot rule out the
possibility of showers at times. Monday could be tricky. 01/12Z
guidance all hinting at a weak ridge lingering between two low
pressures, one offshore and the other near James Bay. There are
decent disagreements on where this weak ridge will set up, and
how long it will persist. At this point, thinking there is
enough mid level moisture to warrant a chance of showers, with
the presence of this ridge merely delaying the onset time. This
will need to be monitored over the coming days.

Another high pressure may get close enough to southern New
England late next week to provide a period of drier weather with
near to slightly above normal temperatures.

.AVIATION /07Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Sunday/...

Today...Moderate to high confidence. IFR/LIFR conditions
with the worst conditions near the south coast in widespread
dense fog very early this morning. An initial cold front will
cross the region towards 12z and allow for lower clouds/vsbys to
gradually improve from north to south, but this process will be
delayed near the south coast.

Further improvement will occur later this morning/afternoon as
a secondary backdoor cold front allows conditions to improve to
marginal MVFR-VFR thresholds with winds shifting to the ENE.
Convergence along this boundary will allow for scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms mainly this afternoon and early
evening. Main risk for convection will be inland from the
eastern MA coast with the potential increasing further south and
west.

Tonight...High confidence. Left over scattered showers/isolated
t-storms will be mainly southwest of Worcester early this
evening and becoming to an end. Otherwise...VFR conditions
expected.

Sunday...High confidence in VFR conditions. NE wind gusts of 15
to 20 knots expected on the coast and up to 25 knots on
Nantucket.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate to high confidence in TAF. A batch of
low clouds to the south may impact the terminal through 10z or
so. Otherwise...VFR to marginal MVFR conditions today. Greatest
risk for any convection will be west of the terminal this
afternoon.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate to high confidence in TAF. Low clouds
and fog should burn off by mid morning. After that time VFR to
marginal MVFR conditions expected. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms may be in the vicinity of the terminal
this afternoon and early evening.

Outlook /Sunday Night through Wednesday/...

Sunday Night: VFR. Breezy. Chance SHRA.

Monday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Windy with gusts
to 30 kt. Chance SHRA.

Monday Night: MVFR/IFR conditions possible. Windy with areas
gusts to 30 kt. Chance SHRA.

Tuesday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Breezy. Chance
SHRA.

Tuesday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Breezy.
Chance SHRA.

Wednesday: VFR. Chance SHRA.

.MARINE...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Sunday/...

Today...Moderate to high confidence. Dense fog across the
southern waters should burn off later this morning as a backdoor
cold front sweeps across the region. Winds will shift to the
north this morning and northeast this afternoon with some 20
knot gusts possible. A few thunderstorms may impact waters near
the south coast this afternoon and early evening.

Tonight and Sunday...Moderate to high confidence. High pressure
over the Canadian Maritimes and low pressure near the mid
Atlantic coast will result in a decent pressure gradient for
early June standards. The result will be Northeast wind gusts of
25 knots developing late tonight into Sunday along with 3 to 6
foot seas. Small craft headlines are posted for most open
waters.

Outlook /Sunday Night through Wednesday/...Moderate confidence.

Sunday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 25 kt. Seas up to 5 ft.

Sunday Night: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with
gusts up to 30 kt. Areas of seas approaching 5 ft. Chance of
rain showers.

Monday: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to 40 kt.
Areas of rough seas. Rain showers likely.

Monday Night: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
40 kt. Rough seas up to 12 ft. Rain showers likely.

Tuesday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 25 kt. Rough seas up to 13 ft. Chance of rain showers.

Tuesday Night through Wednesday: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas
of rough seas. Chance of rain showers.
