Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Mainly dry and unseasonably cool weather persists into Monday.
A low pressure system will pass offshore of New England late
Tuesday but some light rain mixed with wet snow is possible from
an upper level system. Another low pressure center will pass
north of New England and result in some clouds, scattered
showers, and milder temperatures late Thursday into Friday.
Cooler air may filter into the region for Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Numerous clouds across SNE as moisture increases in the 850-700
mb layer ahead of approaching mid level trough. Rather steep
925-700 mb lapse rates 8-9 C/km develop later today as trough
approaches but moisture will be a limiting factor given low
level dry air noted on forecast soundings. Dewpoints down into
the teens and large T/Td depressions will likely suppress shower
activity with mostly virga. Based on radar trends, a few snow
showers possible across the Berkshires into early evening.
Otherwise, low risk of a sprinkle flurry in eastern MA late
today and early evening as the mid level trough swings through.

After the trough passage, expect clearing skies later this
evening through the overnight. A surge of gusty winds behind the
trough will result in wind gusts to 15-25 mph along the coast
and higher terrain this evening, then diminishing overnight.
Rather cold airmass for this time of year with 850 mb temps down
to -12 to -14C. Lows will drop into the upper teens to mid 20s.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Monday...

Weak shortwave ridging behind departing trough and high pres at
the surface will bring sunshine and light winds. Still a cold
airmass with 850 mb temps -10C at 18z before moderating. Highs
should reach mid/upper 40s but sunshine and light winds will
make it feel a bit milder than it is.

Monday night...

Next mid level trough approaches from the west as column
moisture gradually increases overnight ahead of inverted
trough. Clouds will be increasing overnight but any precip
should hold off until Tuesday. Will maintain a dry forecast.
Another cold night with low mostly in the 20s, to lower 30s near
the coast.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Highlights...

* A weak storm should remain well offshore on Tuesday but some
  light precipitation possible from upper level energy.
* May have surge of milder temperatures late Thursday into Friday.
* Cooler air may return for Saturday but quite a bit of
  uncertainty.

Discussion...

Large scale flow consists of a series of slowly progressive closed
lows across the middle latitudes, rather typical of early spring.
The northern stream remains active with cold air holding fast across
much of eastern Canada. A fairly high amplitude ridge along the east
coast will likely result in warmer than normal temperatures making
their way at least into the mid Atlantic states. This sets the stage
for a potentially challenging temperature forecast for late in the
week. Southern New England will be in a transition zone where a
fairly modest shift of the pattern could make a significant
difference in temperature, especially for the Friday and Saturday
time frame. It looks like precipitation during this forecast period
is likely to be fairly light across most of the forecast area with
chances of light precipitation with a short wave trough passage late
Tuesday and again ahead of a warm front on Thursday.

Specific Forecast Issues...

There is fairly good deterministic and ensemble model agreement on a
weak surface wave passing well southeast of New England late
Tuesday. The suite of models do vary, however, with the strength of
an upper short wave trough, which may be enough to initiate at least
light precipitation during Tuesday afternoon and early evening. The
00Z GFS depicts an inverted surface trough from the offshore low
center with .5 to .75 inches QPF across the Cape and Islands. We are
inclined to think that this may be overdone, although the 00Z UKMET
depicts a somewhat similar pattern, albeit not quite so robust. The
00Z ECMWF remains very light on QPF. Ptype of whatever precipitation
falls is a little tricky since it is fairly cold aloft but quite
marginal with respect to rain or snow in the boundary layer.
Suspect it may be a mixture of rain and wet snow with some
accumulation on grassy surfaces possible if the precipitation
intensity is high enough.

A progressive short wave trough and surface low center pass across
southern Quebec Thursday night. This should help draw milder
temperatures into the region on a SW low level flow once a warm
front passes on Thursday.  Ahead of the warm front and over the
higher terrain of NW MA the precipitation may begin as a mixture of
rain and wet snow. Following the warm front passage, mild
temperatures should persist into Friday, although uncertainty as to
just how mild it could get. There is reasonably good consensus of
models for a rather robust low level jet of 50 to 60 knots passing
through Thursday evening but questionable how much of this will mix
to the surface. Trailing cold front and surface high of near 1040 mb
centered over southern Canada may bring cooler temperatures back
into the area for Saturday, although a very strong ridge centered
off the Carolina coast will have 850 mb temperatures of 10C poised
not far to our south. Thus, confidence is very low for Saturday as
subtle changes in the large scale flow could result in very
significant changes in temperature.

Weak low pressure will pass well offshore on Tuesday with limited
impact on winds and waves. Increasing SW wind on Thursday will
likely result in Small Craft Advisory conditions due to winds across
all waters with seas building above 5 feet across the ocean exposed
south coastal waters. There is a low risk of gale gusts late
Thursday afternoon or evening, especially over the near shore waters
if stronger winds aloft are able to mix to the surface.
