.SYNOPSIS...
Dry but blustery and chilly weather overspreads the region today. A
clipper low will pass to the northwest Friday with snow changing to
rain. A lull Friday night prior to possible brushing snows along the S New
England coastline for Saturday. Quiet and near-seasonable conditions
for a brief period prior to another storm system by midweek before a
milder pattern emerges into mid-April.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

4 AM update...

Closed low over southeast Quebec will circulate dry but cold
westerly flow into New England. Temp anomalies at 850 mb are about -
2 standard deviations colder than climo with -12C over the region
this morning. Thus below normal temps today with highs only 40-45,
mid to upper 30s across the higher terrain. Normal high temp today
should be 50-55, so about 10 degs colder than normal today.

Pres gradient between sub 980 mb low over southeast Quebec and 1025
mb high over the Mid Atlantic slowly slackens. This will be
sufficient to allow all wind headlines to expire this morning.
However WNW winds will still gusts up to 30 mph at times thru this
afternoon. This will provide wind chills in the 30s! Not very spring-
like. Although expecting mostly sunny conditions, however
ineffective sunshine given the anomalous cold airmass.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...

Thursday night...

Ridge of high pressure from the Mid Atlantic moves across New
England giving way to diminishing winds and mostly clear skies.
These conditions combined with a very dry airmass will allow temps
to plummet with sunset. Given this setup leaned toward the colder
MOS guidance for temps which yields lows in the 20s for the entire
region along with a few high teens across northwest MA. Mins may
occur around midnight given increasing clouds late at night and
light/variable winds becoming SSW.

Friday...

Clipper low over the Great Lakes moves into southern Ontario with
it's attending warm front approaching southern New England. This
will provide a brief period of warm advection snows into southern
New England, approximately 16z-20z. Column including surface temps
are initially cold enough to support all snow at the onset. However
by afternoon warm front lifting northward with warm sector entering
the region from south to north.  Thus short duration event and this
will limit snow totals. However very strong jet dynamics (150 kt jet
at 250 mb with LFQ over the region 18z Monday) provides more than
adequate lift, with the bulk of the forcing for ascent occurring in
the snow growth region.

Given all of the above factors could see a an hour or two of
moderate snow before snow changes over to rain given strong low
level warming. 00z NAM and RGEM has up to 0.35 inches. While not all
of that qpf falls as snow, it does give some indication that snow
may be moderate to perhaps briefly heavy for a time before rain/snow
line moves across the area. Regarding snow accumulations, basically
less than an inch for RI and eastern MA with an inch or two westward
into CT, western-central MA and a low prob of 3+ inches across the
east slopes of the Berks.

Snow won't stick around too long as warm sector overspreads the
area late in the day with temps rising thru the 40s.

expecting higher heights aloft, Arctic air / energy pushed N, and an
ebb and flow pattern, exchanging airmasses, periods of warm, Spring-
like weather lie ahead. Only a brief near-term period of preferred
H5 troughing against a shifting H5 ridge across Greenland, wintry
weather, pushing through quick with an open Atlantic, an average
upstream near-zonal flow, warm-moist air pushed ashore across the W
CONUS. Targets of opportunity discussed below.

Friday night...

Lingering showers early, otherwise lull. Weak ridging aloft, surface
high pressure. Cold front slowly pushing through parent with digging
N-stream H5 trof. NW flow rearward, beginning cold air advection.

Saturday into Saturday night...

Baroclinic leaf, over-running event. S-stream energy stretched ahead
of digging N-stream H5 trof, beneath a RRQ H3 jet streak, weak wave
low promotion along front, with closer proximity to S New England, a
bigger impact. Pull back along 285-305K isentropes of anti-cyclonic
warm-moist conveyor belt, subsequent deep moist profile N of surface
front, precipitable waters upwards around 0.75 inches, forced upward
per SW-NE frontogenesis per convergent SW H85-7 flow against under-
cutting N winds. Cold air aloft, H925-85 temperatures around -5C,
however, a possible warm-nose intrusion around H8 with upslope of
anomalously warm-moist S air.

Tricky forecast dependent on frontal proximity, weak wave low. If
closer, brushing S New England, then focus on snowfall intensity, if
sleet given warm nose around H8 forecast, 2m temperatures, proximity
of surface-H7 frontal boundary and slope, and resultant snow ratios.
Would consider wet-bulbing, surface cold air likely manifested via
drag down from aloft, while evaluating lift / ascent through the
dendritic growth zone. Daytime event, lighter falling snow, likely
issues of accumulation, especially on roadways with 2m temperatures
above freezing.

Yet not an easy forecast. Decent amount of spread, wobbling run-to-
run forecasts. Roughly 60 hours out, early to lock-in the forecast.
A consensus blend along with WPC forecasts, will hold a brush of
snow across S/E New England. As the prior forecaster mentioned, it
challenge forecasting anafrontal waves and attendant precipitation
shields. Latest forecast will advertise a general 1 to 2 inch snow-
fall in close agreement with WPC.

Sunday into Sunday Night...

N-stream H5 trof axis with attendant mid-level potent vortmax. An
absence of deeper moisture, cold / dry air advection ongoing. Yet
steep lapse rates, ascent, mid-level moisture, cyclonic flow, can't
rule out scattered rain / snow shower activity throughout and brief
burst of NW winds. Chance PoPs. Low-level dry air, with any snow
showers, restrictions to visibility possible, lesser confidence of
any accumulation.

Midweek...

Pacific energy sheared S by upstream amplified flow. Subsequent trof
acting upon lingering SW-NE baroclinic zone. Surface cyclogenesis, a
wave low expected in proximity to S New England. However cold aloft?
Indications of less Arctic intrusion. Cold air shunted back N into
Canada by upstream ridging / low-mid level southwesterlies. Level of
uncertainty on morphology of low ... closed off, possibly cut off.
For now, low confidence, chance PoPs, mixed precipitation event.
Expect adjustments in later forecasts, preference to ensemble means.
One storm at a time.
