.SYNOPSIS...

Dry and chilly weather is in store for the region tonight.
An approaching warm front will bring a cold rain to the region
Tuesday afternoon and evening.  The warm front will cross the region
early Wednesday, resulting in a windy and much milder day with
another round of rain showers.  Dry, but blustery and much chillier
weather follows Wednesday night and Thursday.  More rain and snow
showers are anticipated late Thursday night and Friday, then
blustery and colder again into Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/...

340 pm update...

Brief ridge of high pressure temporarily builds over the region
tonight.  The result will be a period of mostly clear skies for the
first part of the night, before some mid level cloudiness works back
into the region ahead of our next wave of low pressure after
midnight.  Enough clearing along with light winds should result in a
decent night of radiational cooling with lower temperatures dropping
into the middle 20s to the lower 30s in many locations.

There also is the potential for some patchy ground fog later this
evening and into the overnight hours.  This a result of residual
ground moisture/light winds and ideal radiational cooling
conditions.  Will even have to be on the look out for perhaps some
patchy black ice.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...

* Widespread cold rain overspreads the region Tuesday afternoon
* Isolated pockets of freezing rain possible in the highest terrain
* Areas of fog may become locally dense Tuesday night

Tuesday...

Mainly dry weather should prevail into late Tuesday morning across
much of southern New England.  Approaching wave of low pressure will
increase the forcing for ascent from west to east during the
afternoon.  The result will be a widespread cold rain overspreading
the region during the afternoon.  Highs temps should reach into the
lower to middle 40s...but many locations will fall into the 30s
during the afternoon as a result of evaporational cooling.  So a
wet, chilly and raw afternoon is in store for the region.

Much milder temperatures moving in aloft will result in ptype pretty
much in the form of rain with perhaps a few sleet pellets mixed in
at the onset in some locales.  The only area of concern is the
highest terrain along the east slopes of the Berks and northern
Worcester Hills with temperatures around 32.  Pockets of freezing
rain can not be ruled out across the highest terrain...but given
temps around freezing during the day impact on roadways will
probably be limited.  Nonetheless...we can not rule out a few slick
spots at elevations over 1000 feet.

Tuesday night...

Steady rain should exit the region Tuesday evening as wave of low
pressure takes the deeper moisture/forcing with it.  We still will
have to watch for isolated pockets of freezing rain in the highest
terrain along the east slopes of the Berks and northern Worcester
Hills.

After the steady rain exits the region during the evening...but
areas of drizzle and fog will persist. We will have to watch closely
as some of the fog may become locally dense ahead of an approaching
warm front. The warm front will try to lift north across the
region...but given this occurring at night along with pattern
recognition this might be a slower process than much of our guidance
suggests.  Opted to follow the high resolution 2 meter temperatures
from the ARW/NMM/4KM NAM. Therefore...temperatures may still be in
the middle to upper 30s across the interior at 12z Wednesday but
portions of RI/SE MA may have risen into the upper 40s to lower 50s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Highlights...

* Windy and mild with showers Wednesday
* Blustery and colder Thursday
* Snow showers changing to rain Thu night into Fri
* Blustery and colder again Saturday

Overview...

Rather active weather pattern will continue through the end of the
week with multiple chances for precip and sharp temp swings into the
weekend.  Overall temps will average below normal with one mild day
on Wed with chilly days Thu and Sat. Models in agreement on
deepening mid level trough/shortwave lifting NE across New Eng Wed
and this will be preceded by a period of wet weather Tue night and
especially Wed as strengthening low level jet advects +2SD PWATs
ahead of a strong cold front. Blustery and colder weather follows
Thu, then another potent shortwave which breaks off from Hudson Bay
vortex swings across New Eng Fri which will bring another round of
snow showers changing to rain late Thu night into Fri. This will be
followed by another blustery and cold day Sat. Looking ahead to
Sunday, models have backed off on potential coastal storm for now
with more of a broad trough across the NE and coastal low well to
the south. However, low confidence forecast given the time range
and further changes are likely.

Tuesday night into Wednesday...

Light rain will likely be ongoing in the evening with warm front to
the south. Some of the hi-res guidance is suggesting there could
still be a few pockets of freezing rain over interior high terrain
but temps should be rising above freezing in the evening. Precip
should taper off through the night as some mid level drying lifts
north across the region. However, may have to deal with areas of fog
and drizzle overnight as warm front lifts north into the region and
higher dewpoint advects north over colder waters. Temps will be
rising overnight and may reach the 50s by morning in the coastal
plain.

Potent mid level trough and shortwave will move across New Eng Wed
with the attending strong cold front sweeping across SNE during the
afternoon. PWATs increasing to 1.25" ahead of the front so expect a
period of showers to accompany the front. Isolated thunder is also
possible given marginally favorable elevated instability parameters.
A weakening fine line along the front may approach from the west,
but 925-700 mb lapse rates are weakening as front moves into the
region which will limit intensity. The other concern for Wed is
potential for strong SW winds assocd with 60+ kt low level jet.
Temps expected to reach into the lower 60s which will enhance mixing
and GFS soundings indicate potential for gusts 40-50 mph across
eastern half New Eng. May eventually need a wind advisory. The cold
front should be off the coast by evening with clearing skies
developing during Wed night.

Thursday through Sunday...

Blustery and colder conditions in post-frontal airmass Thu with
temps several degrees below normal. Next potent shortwave digging SE
from the upper Gt lakes will be approaching Fri and will likely
bring another round of precip, with snow showers late Thu night
eventually changing to rain Fri as milder air moves in ahead of the
trough and approaching cold front. Cold front moves offshore Fri
night with showers possibly ending as a bit of snow followed by
another shot of cold air and blustery winds into Sat. Airmass on Sat
may be even colder than Thu with 850 mb temps more than 2SD below
normal. Regarding Sunday, there is agreement among the deterministic
guidance of dry weather for now as coastal storm is well offshore.
However, it is day 7 and it will likely change multiple times. About
30 percent of ECMWF ensemble members have some impact for Sunday.
Something to watch this week.

.AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Tuesday Night/...

This afternoon...Moderate to high confidence. MVFR conditions
will continue to improve to VFR from northwest to southeast
through early evening as drier air works into the region.

Tonight...Moderate confidence. VFR conditions likely for the
first part of the night. However...light winds and a period of
at least partial clearing may result in areas of ground fog late
this evening and into the overnight hours. This may result in
localized IFR to perhaps even LIFR conditions in the typically
prone locations.

Tuesday...Moderate confidence. After any early morning ground
fog burns off a period of VFR conditions expected into mid-late
morning. However...should see conditions lower to MVFR and even IFR
in the afternoon from west to east as widespread rain overspreads
the region along with fog patches. We should mention there is a low
risk for isolated pockets of freezing rain/sleet across the highest
terrain...mainly along the east slopes of the Berks and northern
Worcester Hills.

Tuesday night...Moderate confidence. Steady rain exits the
region by mid evening. Otherwise...main concern will be areas of
fog and drizzle. Some of the fog may become locally dense as a
warm front approaches from the south. Overall...expect IFR to
LIFR conditions. LLWS will also be a concern.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate to high confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate to high confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Wednesday through Saturday/...Moderate Confidence.
